Shawn, you could have bought a trailer but you decided to make it yourself the way you wanted it. That is rare today and I salute you for showing us how! Thanks and keep up the content :-)
Thank you Margo! More on the way! We've been pouring concrete this week.
Being from the South Carolina Lowcountry, I can says that your word ..."horrific"...to describe South Carolina roads is an UNDERSTATEMENT.
Haha yep!
Any Man can have a trailer, but a real man will build his own!
I love the design of the winch and also the color will be seen from far away!!!!
this looks like a trailer you would buy. it looks that good. fantastic job.
Thank you! thanks for watching and commenting! - Shawn
And when you look closer it looks like a trailer you would WANT to buy!
Thank you Jackson!
@@GCFD if you want it done right, do it yourself!
from the Netherlands thanks for the video Shawn
Thank you Hollandduck!
13:14 looked like such an Andrew Camarata-esque type of shot! Love the build BTW!
I agree. Money shot!
10/10 that is great, very well done Mr. Slosh or spray some old engine oil and diesel mix all over that wood till she stops drinking. Regards from Valencia Spain. Alec
good idea! Thanks!
Excellent Build Shawn!!! And thank you for the feedback on the other video! I certainly do appreciate the help!!!
👍
I really dig the yellow. Good job Shawn.
👍 Thank you Dave!
Like the paint color that yellow stands out for others drives to see.
I like the color too! I'm just worried it staying looking good.
Shawn you’ve convinced me not to build a trailer 😂. Looks like a lot of work! Great job though, and I really like the yellow paint job - less likely to get hit by other drivers.
It was a cool project. It was a lot of work but also very creative and super cool to create something that works. I'm about to use it this afternoon!
Nice job 👍
Thank you Chris!
Thank you brother. Your video has been very helpful in my upcoming project.
Awesome! I'm glad it was helpful!
Fantastic Shawn! Talented man!
Thank you!
Perfect Documentary. Thank you immensely for taking the time to film. Looking Forward to the Afterthoughts and Math and Conclusions as well as more video breaking it in!
Raspy I've been working and need to get that video finished up! Thanks for commenting - Shawn
Really here for the drainage jobs, but it is very interesting on how the tools come together! Great job with this trailer!
Thank you Steve! More drainage stuff is on the way, waiting for rain footage. This week we did concrete!
@@GCFD I love the concrete stuff as well! I seem to never pick up the correct end of the hammer so the build stuff is interesting but isn’t something that I will be hands on with. As a Certified Professional Land Use Planner for a City of just over 27,000 citizens your hands on drainage and concrete projects really help me in my profession. Keep up the great work and I look forward to your work on Land Clearing!
@@steverusie6986 thank you Steve! I’m glad you find my stuff helpful.
Happy for you Shawn. Thanks for documenting the project.
The filming and editing video series was almost as much work as the trailer build!
nice job on the trailer
👍
Great trailer, congrats Shawn. I kinda like the color. You sure can't miss it on the road.
Thank you Steven!
Good Wednesday afternoon to you sir from Wellington Somerset in the UK
👍
Love the color, nice build!
Thank you! - Shawn
looks fantastic shawn
Thank you Alan~!
Nice job, thanks for showing us all your hard work, from, Perth, West Australia.
Other than the colour that is a fantastic looking trailer. Great work.
Shawn. Love the yellow. I vote to keep it. You’re going to need to build some more trailers to haul your fleet of equipment. More details in what you have invested in the trailer. Time and money if you care to divulge. Thanks for the videos.
Yes, that'll be the next video. Cost and titling. I need to make that one soon!
@@GCFD
Are to allowed to have a trailer hooked to the back of a trailer? How does one man bring his Skid Steer Loader and his Excavator in one trip? Seems like you need more than one piece of machinery for most jobs.
Fantastic job. I vote to paint it darker green . thanks for sharing!
Trailer looks great 👍 love the skid steer should have no problem moving material at all.keep up the great videos Shawn ✌️👍👌😎
Thank you Ken!
The wood $$$ Wow!
For sure! metal was even more expensive so what do you do?
You did a fantastic job on the trailer. It looks like something you'd buy from a dealer. I don't even like the color yellow at all and I still love the way it looks.
Haha thank you!
I have watched from start to finish and you do great work. BTW I love the yellow paint
Thank you Edwin! The last installment should be up soon.
Nice build congrats. You could start a trailer business as a side hustle.
This took a good bit of time but I think it came out nicely. 👍
That trailer looks awesome bro, good job!
Thank you Anthony!
Great Ideas Shawn. Even go so far to add a Generator for welding repairs to your equipment in the field. Wood was more expensive than a steel deck, but in the long run, it's an expense that will last quite a while. Maybe a small light bar in the rear of the cab for early morning or night deliveries or pickups. Run one in my truck, and it's great to have, and as always, Great Job!
Thank you Robert!
@@GCFD
Was the wood really more expensive than a steel deck?
Amazing job on the trailer. You've got me wanting to get more practice welding so I can build myself a trailer one day.
Getting the right welder was the biggest thing for me. That miller 250 is awesome!
fantastic job
Thank you!
You Sir, are an excellent craftsman! I have wanted to build a trailer for a while. When I do I will be able to use your videos as a guideline. Well done. The trailer should work out well for years. Thank you for making these videos.
thank you Winston! i think making the videos was more work than making the trailer. I still need to do the last installment of this build, titling, cost, and using!
@@GCFD Very nice Sir.
Great job Shawn. Looks good and it's definitely going to do the job.
👍 Shane
Wow, this concluded the building serie of this trailer, nice, really like it!
I still want to talk about the price and titling process (in NC) and some clips on using it.
@@GCFD Even that I dont live in the US, it will still be interesting to hear about the price, and to see it be used, looking forward to that as always :)
The Gate City trailer building company.🤔 That is one sweet trailer.
Thank you Jeffrey! I like it so far.
Is smooth pvc better at applying the truck's brakes or would corrugated do the job? 😁 More seriously, is wood expansion something to worry about? Are you going to treat it? I love the yellow colour for the metal, would be a shame to paint it black!
The pressure treated will shrink over time, which is why I pull the boards tight together. I will treat it after a few months and the wood dries out some. And yes, PVC for the win!
LMAO...so zany!
Great job ! 👍 my wife would have been pissed if I spent that much time and money on a trailer!!! And that’s why I’m not Married!😂 I do what I want when I want with my own money!!😀
Haha Rock on! 👍
Great project! I've wired a few trailers and those heat shrink "Solder and Seal Connectors" are worth their weight in gold.
That’s a nice trailer
Thank you!
Did you stamp that vin number underneath somewhere (hidden) so that if the trailer is ever stolen it’s still identifiable if the visible one is ground off? It should have it stamped in a couple places for easy identification. Just a thought.
Yes I stamped it in a few places. And I welded my initials in the frame. You can see it in the wiring video.
Was my comment on the previous video, Since having a Welding business in the family for almost 40 years every custom trailer build had it ( and a name) welded in - not just stamped....
Hope you made sure to put the growth rings up, like a rainbow, so when the boards cup they shed the water instead of holding it.
Yes of course.
Very Nice Work!! Myself....my brain just fogs over when I try to tackle even simple wiring of any kind.
Hope you didn’t have to sell your first born to afford that timber. Great trailer build mate!
Those boards were $38 each!
Do you check the rims and hubs for heat ?, with a new trailer, you should check every time you get out of the truck.
No I didn't know that was a thing. I'll check.
Nice build. You may want to add more reflective tape to the sides, DOT requires at least 1/2 the length of the trailer to be in tape.
Good call!
Looks good
Thank you Shannon!
Wow, that is an impressive build! I've built the occasional house, car, train but nothing like that trailer. Oh, I should add, my builds were in Lego! 🤭 Love how you just had to go out and buy another machine...hope to see any maintenance work done on that soon. Really though, great work, great vid and looking forward to the next one already 😊
Thank you Tracy! The next and final installment will be titling, cost, using, reflections. Coming soon-ish.
Soon-ish! SOON-ISH! Not that I want to put any pressure on you, BUT, please hurry with the next vidoe, please! 🤭🤭🤭
Was that too much? I can never tell!!! 😊
Haha It's on my list to get done for sure. I have been getting some video of using the trailer from other jobs or ones that were too small to make a video, so hopefully it'll be worth the wait Tracy!
You need to cross your chains. It will act as a cradle if your trailer hitch fails and is required by DOT if you are CMV.
Good point!
I’ve been crossing the chains for years and never knew why I was doing it. Thanks for telling me! Lol
Great job Shawn, I agree that the paint may need altering. Why not put black on the deck plates and keep the rest yellow?
I like the idea of black on yellow.
Good luck with your new trailer which looks great. Suggest you load the trailer keeping the weight on top of the twin axles and then you will have better balanced trim when towing. I know it may not be always possible but its much easier tow a balanced load than where it is either front loaded, where the weight is bearing down on the hitch, or rear loaded where it is pushing up the hitch. I like your channel and enjoy your presentations.
I guess you know that balanced with out toung weigght is no bueno ... right ..
If you had to do it over again would you have the smooth side of the channel frame facing inward? I think it would have made cutting and welding a couple of the frame cross members easier, but then would have complicated the side rub rails, D-rings, and fenders. Nice trailer build, Shawn! I am planning on building my own. This build series is very helpful =0)
No way Loren. Check out my other trailer videos where I referb a Hudson trailer ua-cam.com/video/IsJDK9UaARM/v-deo.html This has the C channel facing the wrong way and I still struggle to tie stuff down with that trailer. My yellow trailer is still my favorite.
I am not sure if you can still buy Imron paint but that might have been a better choice It is a industrial paint and a lot of mines use it to paint there equipment. It has a really strong smell to it,
Loved the trailer build series. With the skid steer on the trailer what is the overall travel level like ,it could affect truck steerage.🇳🇿👍👌
I've pulled the skid for around five hours so far on the trailer. It pulls well and rides well.
I redecked my car hauler about 6 months ago and gapped the boards 3/16. If I was to do it again, I think I would go 1/2 gap.
Awesome!
Cheers
👍 Laurie
Looks great. 2 things. 1. Please cross your chains so if you come unattached it will cradle the tongue. 2. Couldn't you have turned that hitch upside down so you wouldn't have needed to cut it off? Once again great build!!!
Yes john! I've been crossing the chains every time now. And i tried turning the hitch but it looked terrible. Cut!
You can paint the high wear parts black.
Great idea! The trailer would look even more unique.
You may want to coat the ends with log sealer to help prevent future splitting - which you can probably do from the underside even with the deck installed.
Great idea!
I agree the cut ends of the pressure treated wood should be retreated anf if the filler center board had to be ripped to fit then the ripped should be treated too.
Nice job. Your skid steer almost didn't fit. 😎👍 On my 25 foot gooseneck flat bead I mounted my winch the same way. (reese receiver) I use a Harbor Freight BadLand 12000 lb Works great. Strong too.
👍 My truck has a gooseneck hitch but I've never pulled one. Are they safe? What if the ball lets go, will the trailer take out the cab?
@@GCFD I think Goosenecks are a lot safer than bumper pulls, the way weight is distributed in front of rear axle. If it was to come loose from the ball the hitch might hit a short wheel base cab before the trailer hit the back of the bed. Id have to measure it. They pull so much better. Also you can turn them around in a 2 lane road.
@@1loadermanjack they make a lot more sense than BP trailers.
@@GCFD I measured my Silverado,(6ft. bed) front of trailer is 32 inches from bumper but the hitch is 31 inches from front of bed. My GMC Sierra has 8ft bed , it wouldn't hit the front in that truck. Also on both of my trucks I have B&W turn over hitches. Once you pull a gooseneck you won't like BP's anymore. lol
Hi Shawn, is your trailer now finished? And what sort of moveable winch are you going to use on this new trailer, as I think that it is really good that you took the time to build this one ☝️ and for it to look really good for such a practical piece of equipment.
Yes the trailer is finished and I've been using it. The next video will be costs, titling, using. Coming soon!
i see you mentioned that you might paint the trailer black at some point, but if it comes to that point, you should keep some of the yellow, so it's like a bee, black and yellow lol
That was my original plan - to paint certain parts black like the rub bars and the front decking. I thought it would look pretty cool. Time got away from me and I just did yellow.
Looks awesome. Is there a parking brake on the truck? Possible to wire that to the trailer brake? I guess the engineered brake pipe does work tho! Can't wait to see the skid steer at a new job!
That's a great idea but I think the pipe works just fine for now, like you said. I definitely prefer schedule 40 over corrugated for applying the brakes!
@@GCFD lmao
What was total cost to build?
Could that trailer hitch just able to spin around 180° instead of cutting. Unsure if it would work!?. Great build by the way. 😁👍
I'm not sure I understand your question
@@GCFD the part you cut, that was too close the the road. As you pulled it out of the truck, could it have been pulled out then turned 180° the put back in the truck?. That might have worked without cutting the bottom off??.
It would flip that part over. Too late now as you've cut it, but I thought it could have been an idea. Hope I described it correctly. Nice trailer Shawn .
Yes it could have been turned up. It still looked wrong with that much hitch sticking up in the air so It needed to be cut. 👍
@@GCFD I thought you would have looked into doing that but I didn't hear you mention that you looked at it so I thought I'd give it a mention. Thank Shawn, waiting for your next video 😁
Really enjoyed the trailer series. What do you think the outcome was with regard to the cost of building vs the cost to buy one like you've built?
I'm working on the last installment, titling, cost, using. I think it would have been way cheaper to buy but the lead time was 16 weeks
@@GCFD Pleased there is another instalment to come.
Do you stain the wood or leave it being pressure treated? What about adding like a grip spray lining or tape, etc. I've seen a lot of videos of people and machines slipping on wet mossy wood trailer decks.
I have treated wood decks before with thompsons water sealer with good results. Several commenters have mentioned used motor oil.
Paint your decking with old motor oil. it's as good as stain and a lot cheaper.
I have tons of that. Does it make the deck slick?
@@GCFD
Definitely is going to make the deck slick. Why not just use the old motor oil on the bottom and sides and ends and then maybe some truck bed liner for the top. Or clear with a texture, maybe sand and just touch it up as time goes on. Depending on visual preference. Seems sealing yet grippy
Excellent job
Thank you Chris!
Which axles did you use ? I’m in the middle of rebuilding an old trailer and looking to buy a new tandem axle kit
@@cd1168 I used some 7000 blacked with electric brakes. I think they were dexter
Cross your chains.
👍
Hey Shawn
Definitely keep the trailer yellow, I think it stands out plus when people look they see your company name.
This was an awesome build, was it cheaper to build one or just buy one??
Cheers
Lee from the UK 🇬🇧
The next/final installment will be talking about cost, Way cheaper to buy and not build!
G’day mate, nice build have enjoyed watching this little series, do you treat your boards with anything eg linseed oil? Or are they treated pine?
I use used motor oil, best cheap way just as good.
I am letting the boards dry out a little but want to treat them with something. I'm worried that used oil will be too slick?
@@GCFD the boards will soak the oil in. All stain or water repellent is, is oil. Google it, some thin the oil with diesel some use it straight.
@@bcschroeder8696 awesome. Thank you! I have lots of used oil around!
How does Shawn apply the brakes? With schedule 40 PVC, of course!
Haha. Another commenter wondered if corrugated would work better for that application. 👍
Acknowledging that I have not built a trailer before....I would have spaced the boards apart, say, 1/2" maybe. You butted them to each other. Why no space between them? Is there a reason beyond personal preference? Thanks!
These are brand new boards and so they will shrink a bit. I close the gaps knowing that gaps will form as the boards dry out. Same with a deck.
Why not protect the paint when cutting that hole for the receiver?
I didn't see a way to protect it. I primed and painted over everything once I cleaned it up. What a pain.
Any water projects coming up?
They are waiting for rain footage. I did two awesome concrete jobs last week and have several other old ones waiting for footage.
im from north Carolina Moore County can i ask where your located you did damn good work except for the pain n the prep u had to do with Rustolem u dont need to do the Prep
The prices they are charging for lumber I will be choosing the lumber that I’m buying.
How did you go about getting it titled (ie) the VIN number I have always wondered about that process because I would like to build my own trailer as well
Are you in NC? What I had to do was take the trailer to the DMV for an inspection. I had all my receipts for the parts and materials. They looked at the VIN I had stamped on the trailer, looked at my paperwork and gave me the paperwork to title it. They didn't check a single thing with the trailer besides the VIN.
@@GCFD
Yes I'm in NC I appreciate the info great job looking forward to seeing more
Hello
You said you would make a hole in the front diamond plate to drain the water
Did you regret it?
Dont forget painting naked place such new thing which weld it
Yes I dirilled a few holes and they are working very well.
what is the maximum load for this equipment trailer?
will 3Tons forklift will be ok?
I have to admit that I have never seen anyone strap their wood planking tightly together. I was a jumbo jet pilot so what do I know...other than I have been told that wood expands when wet. If that is true then why would you strap dry wood together, or was it wet wood strapped together???
This was brand new green treated lumber so it was very wet. It contracts as it dries out and gives a slight gap between the boards.
@@GCFDThanks...now I know the answer to my question...and it makes sense. Blue Sky's.
I would put the vim number in some different places 1 that can be seen and a couple hidden and take photos of were they are. As you said in a earlier video that there was quite a phew trailers going missing
Agreed. Use the welder to weld GCFD in a couple of places or cut the letters into some permanent piece, make things difficult.
I sure did! I also welded my initials into the frame. They are visible in the previous video (;
@@GCFD "Excellent" as Monty Burns would say
@@ronkennedy213 at least I’m not working in sector 7-G
Hi Shawn Great Looking Trailer, Where do you get the Decking lumber from?
What is the trailers registered GVWR? Just curious. Did you have to go and get it inspected to get it registered?
Robert the inspection was a joke. He took one look at the trailer and my paperwork and signed off on it. It has no registered weight as they didn't ask for one. I need to finish that video where I title it.
@@GCFD my question here is. What happens with DOT If you get pulled over and don’t have a registered weight? I feel they dropped the ball and put you in a hard place if you get stopped
Are you acounting for Shrinkage ???...
Yep!
What paint do you find best to use on a trailer?
I haven't found a good one yet. The rust-o-leum was decent.
Your Bobcat died? Letsdig19 is down in the Carolinas too, he likes his volvo excavator too (a 220) Maybe the skis steer will work for you on some of the bigger projects.
Please consider keeping it yellow, people are less likely to run into a bright yellow vehicle.
Or perhaps white, another safer colour.
Both show up well at night and against the black of road surfaces.
Statistically they are about 10% less likely to be in an accident, and that is significant.
I like the yellow more and more every day. It's showing signs of use but I can touch those up.
Yellow ( im not a fan of white at all ) It's the official color of Matt's off road & recovery, including the Banana (Jeep) and the Morrvair. Not to mention we had a custom '83 3/4 ton Suburban in the family that was yellow as well.
A person who is excessively orderly and fussy is described as being Anally Retentive.
Supposedly this is some reference to their childhood toilet training.
For Myself I just consider it’s a sign of Craftsmanship and Pride in your Construction.
Thank you! I tried to put the effort where it would pay off. Aligning the bolts perfectly wasn't worth the effort for me.
Hello sir how are you doing it's a nice job that you do and I really like it I just want to ask if there will be an any opportunity for me to come join you work cuz I really need this chance to work out how you doing
What is the gauge of the C channel main beams? are they 5mm ?
I didnt nootice you crowning the lumber ror the. Deck when gou mentioned the knotts i waz sure you wolid have pointedbout thst the rings of the tree .. will cup the boards .. when playing as kids we learned to place boards so yhe grain will shed water
I think you had the hitch you cut upsidedown but not sure
Tyler it definitely worked upside down but it looked really stupid sticking up so high. It had to go.
Pine for decking?
I should have mentioned that! This is pressure treated southern yellow pine, Pinus taeda
you could of flipped that hitch around, just make sure it dont hit the tailgate when lowered
For sure. It was too high when flipped so it got cut 👍
@@GCFD Before posting I said to myself a man building his own trailer would surely know to flip the hitch around and try that first, I should have known better, you got it covered! Btw best of part of your videos are going back in a downpour to watch!
I think after a couple of years when the wood will be destroyed… you will go for steel deck. That will last forever. My suggestion will be to get at least one spare tire for the trailer. You can attach them on the front. Left and right.
My care trailer's wood deck is 15 years old and starting to deteriorate, so I hope to get 15 out of this one. Steel is just too slippery for me.
@@GCFD good! I was thinking on the steel with diamond pattern on it.
Yes diamond plate is extremely slippery when wet or muddy.
