Hi Tom I've been out the game for sometime I started looking back at your UA-cam looking and trying to play I managed to get the train sound and num 4 hold whistle and cover your lips and relaxing then blow the air from the side of the harmonica
Thank You Thank You THANK YOU!!!!! Wonderful and simple explanation of something I really need to know as many of my musician friends like to play minor. I recently bought a complete set of Hohner Pentaharps tuned in minor keys but your tips will help me with my everyday harps. Bravo!
Tomlin, good timing. Becky & I walk every morning for apx 1-hour. She let me have 😮, “finish the song’. Play it right (she used to teach band). Work w a teacher(s). Ok ok. Your it
I have known this for a long time but this helped clarify everything. Basically, I am only going to play in 2nd minor (and maybe third minor - but a question I had was what notes not to play in 3rd)
Hi Tomlin, nicely explained I get asked this a lot from beginner musicians and some that have been playing for a long time. Now ill just tell them to check out this video save me some time. Thanks.
T -- I just realized that my UA-cam settings were wrong and I was not being notified of your weekly lessons. Then I discovered this lesson that has arrived at just the right time to help me (finally) solidify my understanding of playing a minor blues. My band is getting back together after a year of lockdown, and several minor blues are on the new list. As always, your lessons are extremely well organized and useful. Thanks from Portland....
I listened and re-listened to you playing a demo of the difference between the 12 Bar Major and Minor Blues using the same solo. I was hoping to hear a difference. I just didn't detect a difference. One of my new years resolutions is to really brush up on 12 bar blues and I've been listening to your lessons again. I always enjoy your detail and enthusiasm. Best to you in the new Year. Ken.
Tomlin I am a student of yours and I really appreciate the generous amount of information you give out. I had a question about the miner scale and this really helped. Thank you Nick D.
Tomlin, This video clearly explains the differences between playing major and minor blues. Just as in your online courses, you've been consistent, clear, and instructive here. Anyone who is looking for effective harmonica instruction can't go wrong by signing up for your lessons. Robert from Virginia
Excellent tutorial! I've been reading this stuff for years in relation to guitar but this is the first time it's made so much sense to me. The contrasting little jams in major and minor were enlightening.
It is always great fun to follow your lessons! I am defintely not going to be a harmonica Superstar, but you make me want to improve my playing more and more. Great mix of explanantion and motivation. Thanx and keep on the good work!
You're very good at explaining theory. I'm still just starting out (and frustratingly stuck on bends), but your videos also do a great job of explaining music theory that's puzzled me for years on other instruments. Thank you so much!!
I love the way Tomlin walks you through each instruction. Best and easiest way to learn the harmonica. His sheet music, along with his UA-cam videos, makes it easy to practice and get it right
Tomlin, I am an old boy trying to learn a new toy and your great lessons have been such a big help, thank you so much, I love your PDF tabs along with the music and chords, very much appreciated, the above lesson, just another great lesson to add to your greatest hits! Thanks :)
Thomlin So playing in the easy key (no bends needed to be in key with a minor) you want to play in 3rd position? Or in your example C is second position from G and F is second position from C or 3rd position from G?
2nd position is 5 tones higher than the key of the harmonica (So if your harmonica is inth e key of C, second position would be G). 3rd position is one tone up from the key of the harmonica (So on a C harp, the 3rd position would be D). in third position, you can hit all the target minor blues key's notes without bending (On the C harp, you can hit all the notes of Dm blues key).
Great lesson.. Good info. You showed a few or more different scales on various lessons. I play the ones I remember at the beginning of my practices. But the more you show the more confused I get about which is which. The blues scale is the only one I'm always sure of its name. Could you do a tab with at least the ones you show all in one document? Like I do this one , and don't know what its called. -2" -2 -3" -3' 4 -4 5 -5
Man I’m like decent at harmonica now and can learn a lot by ear, but I don’t really know what to listen to. Anyone have any recommendations on learning new licks from someone? All I find are these tutorials on very beginner stuff and it’s hard to progress.
Check Jason ricci for amazing licks but don't expect to master them soon! Adam Gussow is another huge star of the harmonica world but, again, there's some really hard stuff there. With both of them overblows become important and I believe Jason overdraws too. Good luck on your journey!
question, you said to play a minor scale in 3 rd position, use the major key lower by 1 letter, so is there a difference between a major key lower by 1 letter compare to a real minor scale harp ? In other word, is there a difference between a F major harp compare to a G minor harp ?
Hi. So I can not use -3 and -7, 2 and 5 and what about -3`` and -6 ? I ask because when I play MINOR blues in 2nd and i play -3`` and -6 I can feel that something is not right. So can I play -3`` and -6 in minor 2nd or not really ? Regards
I am So lost with the major and minor and positions and the 5th Lil the music lingo I am totally lost. Do I need to take a class or lessons because you lose me and I hate being lost.need help in that area. Thanks
Of course, in third position you can also play the 1 draw, which is an octave below the 4 draw. Further, the student observes that he can't play third position in the key of Fm, because, as far as he knows, the E flat harmonica does not exist. Lucky it's not a common key.

Another excellent lesson!! Thanks so much!!
Finally, the answers I was looking for. Thanks.
Best lesson on how to use the second position, which I prefer, on minor blues. Thanks Tomlin!
Been coming back time after time to learn some stuff!
Verry good pedagogue! Comming from a born Canadien Frech guy, that is a hell of a compliment.
Please continnue.

3rd position was always a mystery to me and you've helped to de-mistify it, thanks!
Great lesson! Deffinitely look forward to next lessons on the minor blues topic
I’m about a year in with my harmonica and your videos have been very helpful for me. I’m already adding harmonica to my songs. Thank you
Good lesson cheers

Hi Tomlin. This lesson of yours is another masterpiece.
Another great lesson, Tomlin. As good of a musician as you are, you are an even better teacher!
Brilliant 👏👏👏
Thank you . I ever understood that before.

Great teaching! Thanks. This is really a relevation: third position for playing blues in minor.
Excellent tutorial! I've been reading this stuff for years in relation to guitar but this is the first time it's made so much sense to me. The contrasting little jams in major and minor were enlightening.

Thanks Tomlin
As ever, for someone with the most rudimentary knowledge of music theory, you explanations are crystal clear and really helpful. Thanks man.
You're very good at explaining theory. I'm still just starting out (and frustratingly stuck on bends), but your videos also do a great job of explaining music theory that's puzzled me for years on other instruments. Thank you so much!!
Thanks Tomlin. I've been learning from Jon Gindick's Rock n' Blues Harmonica and just came across your channel. Very helpful stuff!
I really enjoy all of your videos and you helped me out a ton with starting to learn how to play. Thank you
I love the way Tomlin walks you through each instruction. Best and easiest way to learn the harmonica. His sheet music, along with his UA-cam videos, makes it easy to practice and get it right

Great stuff
Great explanation Tomlin. That had me baffled, and now i don't have to buy minor key harmonicas lol!
Thank you so mutch :)
great video!! thx for it!
How do I hit dflat minor on a blues harp? Thanks man for all the help. Wish I could comprehend more of what you are saying.
Advice please: I'm wondering if there's 5 scales I should learn what are they and in what order should I learn them please? Thanks!
nice

Great -very informative but should you pushing this to relative newbies as it complicates and confuses when you are just learning.
Sweet!
Hi. So I can not use -3 and -7, 2 and 5 and what about -3`` and -6 ? I ask because when I play MINOR blues in 2nd and i play -3`` and -6 I can feel that something is not right. So can I play -3`` and -6 in minor 2nd or not really ? Regards
I'm a bit confused, the example you played as the major blues had a 1/2 bent 3 draw, not a clean 3 draw.... ??
I am So lost with the major and minor and positions and the 5th Lil the music lingo I am totally lost. Do I need to take a class or lessons because you lose me and I hate being lost.need help in that area. Thanks
Pentatonic in that there are only five notes in the scale instead of seven? Why only five?
Appreciate your effort Tomlin ,but I am lost.
The title says simplified 😆 I’m done in

are you related to Olivia Wilde ?
Great videos btw because of you I bought a harmonica and now Im making my neighbors nuts haha
You can always play minor over major, but NEVER major over minor ( I made this comment before you mentioned it near the end lol ) 👍🎶😎
I need your watch?
2:49 there is no backing on the riffs. Literally hear you play the same riff with no difference
You need a backtrack bro
Beauty eh.
bluesy
How to starts at 420
A Good, and useful Lesson - great explanations
Great stuff.
