this song wasn't on youtube so I wanted to put it up! I don't own the rights to it, it's just a slightly rare Johnston song that I thought needed to be shared.
Really, quite profound. Not just that he had to have actually been IN the looney-bin during the writing of this song (or not long after his release from the ward)----It's that there is an incredible purity and innocence about the voice and about this simple, almost humble, tune. And a great sense of isolation, if not loneliness; as if he really is singing not just with himself, but TO himself---and ONLY himself there, locked in the asylum of his own mind, yet somehow finding peace within it all. The song is in G major, which i associate with aquamarine. Kind of fitting that is was one step away from the bleakness of a blue A-flat. Kind of like a choice to be happy in ones own waters, rather than to be flung out into the stars on Christmas eve.
I love Daniel Johnston, but I feel like it was recorded in G major because G, C, and D are pretty much the only chords he could play on guitar. (I think I heard him play Em on a live version of Worried Shoes)
I feel like his songs are often directed at himself, which is one of the most unique aspects of his songwriting in my opinion. So often the singer is obviously trying to send a message to someone else, or the world at large, but Daniel almost always seemed to be attempting to direct or reassure himself. And in speaking to himself, he spoke to anyone who would actually take the time to listen.
Love it - though i can't make out the lyrics, for the most part, it's Great anyway. {Is he saying, bah humbug?} Some of his songs are so Good, they stay in your head for days, and you just wanna keep hearing it over & over. I'd love to think some of mine are that good!
Christmas in the looney bin Shining star Christmas in the looney bin Shining star Ah, shine the star Ah, shine the star Final cheer, the new year's here Shining star Final cheers, the new year's here Shining star Ah, shine the star Ah, shine the star The star of stars The star of stars Christmas in the looney bin Shining star Christmas in the looney bin Shining star Ah, shine the star Ah, shine the star Final cheer, the new year's here Shining star Final cheer, the new year's here Shining star Ah, shine the star
@@UnfamiliarPlace Yes, "far shines the star", and I hear "If I don't hear the New Year's here" as though he is waiting for the New Year to arrive and be released (perhaps from the asylum). "The star of god," also sounds like "the stars have gone" and I think he is aware of this and alternating those phrases. This song is employing highly sophisticated poetic devices. Daniel was a gifted fellow.
@@patcourtenay558 The one around 1:50 is definitely "cry no tears" to my ears. I think you're right about "the stars have gone", which also sounds more like his style than "the star of God".
I'm a nurse in a "looney bin". Best job I've ever had. Just wish there were better meds and better treatment for people with serious mental health issues. My unit is really good and we treat people with care and the dignity they deserve. That's not how it is other places:(
You said it! I'm surprised to see a psych nurse saying that, as a psych ward survivor myself. The best you can do is let people know that if they're compliant the first time, they won't be forced for longer or with worse treatments like the shot. Just minimize the medication and trauma the best you can and let them know things do get better after meds and you don't lose yourself. Yes the drugs are awful but as long as they're not forever, I get the chance to be me again. People need hope and love and patience more than anything. I hope in a small way I've helped you help others.
THANKS... DO YOU KNOW WHO DID THE ARTWORK IN THE VIDEO AND ALSO THE VIDEO EDITING. ITS QUITE WELL DONE. AS A MUSICIAN I ADMIRE DANIEL JOHNSTON DEDICATION AND DETERMINATION TO PERSEVERE AND KEEP WRITING AND NOT GIVE UP. THATS INTEGRITY.
Well this song is just G C D in standard tuning, which is probably the world's most common chord progression so it was probably unintentional. Which song do you think they swiped it from? Daniel's influence did indeed reach far and wide.
@@llewen123 yeah it also has a childishness to it and Jack White's voice is somewhere between Daniel Johnson and Robert Plant ...but equally, this is a very generic song. someone with the inclination could find 100s of examples and virtually everyone who's every strummed those chords while learning guitar will have come up with something similar.
What happened to Daniel? He looks sane early on. I wonder if his parents thought he was lazy, or something putting him down for drawing, and making songs?
"His clothes are dirty, but his hands are clean, / And you're the best thing that he's ever seen."
Quite a vibe

The G chord of mr johnston 💞 😇😇😇😇
As the late, great Lou Reed himself said, "One chord is fine, two might pushing it. Three chords? Now you're into jazz." 😇

According to his former manager, it was actually recorded in the psych ward itself

Most beautiful, Most heartbreaking.
