  • I share my morning prayer routine with those who may be curious how this American Orthodox convert starts his day. I use the Jesus Prayer and Orthodox Christian Prayers, from St. Tikhon's Monastery. I normally include personal prayers as well but I omitted these for this video. Glory to God!

Hello, you don't know me. I'm FROM Arizona and New Mexico but have been living South of Kansas City for about 5 or 6 years. I'm coming from a lapsed Roman Catholic background even though my father was and is Protestant (my mom was Roman Catholic and still venerates her guardian angel but ...) Anyway ...a few weeks ago I started questioning my lapse in a serious way, but I read journey to Orthodoxy some months ago and I had been to a Byzantine Rite church in Albuquerque ... So, I finally contacted the nearest church to where I live and work and it is a Greek Orthodox Church. This is a process, and for the first time in forever I am praying every day. Anyway, I love your videos! I just found your videos...right on time for my new spiritual journey.

Thank you for sharing your journey with me. I also live south of Kansas City! If you have an opportunity stop by Holy Trinity Orthodox Church in Overland Park and visit with us. I would also encourage to reach out to Fr. Timothy Sawchak who is my priest, as he would be very happy to set up an appointment to meet with you.
I hope that our paths cross as well.

One small note: Every time you say: Lord, Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, the sinner, it will come with sign Cross. t . Every time to do this. You are only at the Stage 1, there is also more stages. By time you need your heart and mind to learn to pray always, by saying in your thoughts.

Very fun that you have connections in Santa Fe and have a cross from Old Town. We are in Albuquerque.
Our morning prayers are one of the highlights of the day. My personal prayers (including the Jesus Prayer different times throughout the day) are separate from our family prayers but all so wonderfully full compared to what my prayer life was as a Protestant; aimless and unfocused and (ironically) full of vain repetitions.
Thank you again for sharing this. Your videos have been a huge part of our journey into Orthodoxy as well. Maybe I'll email you the full story (thus far) sometime if you ever want.

Good morning, Lisa! I read from the book Orthodox Christian Prayers by St. Tikhon’s Monastery Press MMXIX. I believe the prayer you are asking about is A Prayer For Mid-morning by Saint Basil the Great:
“ O Lord our God, who hast given peace unto men and hast sent down the gift of thine All-holy Spirit upon thy disciples and apostles, and didst by thy power open their lips with the tongues of fire: open also the lips of us sinners and teach us how and for what we must pray. Be thou the helmsman of our life, O thou calm haven of the storm-tossed, and make known unto us the way wherein we should walk. Renew an upright spirit in our inmost parts and by thy ruling Spirit make steadfast our fickle mind, so that each day being led by thy good Spirit toward whatever is profitable, we may be counted worthy to accomplish thy commandments and to keep always in remembrance thy glorious coming, which searches out the deeds of men. Lend us thy power, lest we be deceived by the ruinous delights of this world: give us instead to yearn for the enjoyment of the treasures laid up for the age to come: for blessed and praised art thou in all thy saints, unto ages of ages. Amen.
      Blessings to you!

Thank you sir for sharing!! I'm roman Catholic but I really want to learn about orthodoxy. First of all I'm sorry for my bad English but I have few questions for you as an Orthodox. 1. Do Orthodox make cross sign before and after prayer?
    2. Do Orthodox pray hail Mary?
    3. Why do Orthodox celebrate Christmas on January?

    • @OrthodoxGardener
      @OrthodoxGardener  4 роки тому +5

Greetings! Thank you for reaching out to me. I would encourage you to read The Orthodox Church by Timothy Ware, and his book The Orthodox Way, as I found them very useful in my conversion from Protestantism to Orthodoxy.
Yes, the Orthodox cross themselves, however they end their cross over the heart - which is the opposite of Catholics.
Yes, they pray to Mary - who is referred to as the Theotokos.
The Orthodox celebrate Christmas and Easter (Pascha) on different times depending on the calendar used. In the United States my church celebrates Christmas on the same day as the rest of the US - December 25th. However, other Orthodox, such as the Serbian and the Fathers on Mount Athos, celebrate on January 7th.
However, we celebrate Pascha (Easter) using the "Old" calendar which is based on time/full moon occurrences.
I would encourage you to attend an Orthodox Liturgy and speak with the priest afterwards, as they are very friendly and open to answering any question that you may have. They will also meet with you over a period of time without any pressure or expectations.
Thanks for watching my video and reaching out to me. May God bless your journey!

Hello, Catholic friend! I'm not far along in my spiritual journey, but I am Orthodox. My morning prayer routine includes this prayer to Mary: "It is truly right to bless you, O Theotokos, ever blessed and most pure and the mother of our God. More honorable than the cherubim and more glorious beyond compare than the seraphim, without corruption you gave birth to God the Word. True Theotokos, we magnify you." You can add that to your prayer routine if you want. I think it is nice. =)

We do have a prayer similar to the Hail Mary in Orthodoxy, which goes:
"Rejoice, Virgin Theotokos, Mary full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, for thou hast borne the Savior of our souls."
Orthodox Christians who practice the Western Rite do say the Western version of the Hail Mary, or some form of it

I wanted to say about the monastery in Arizona (Saint Anthony the great) the elder passed away last year. He was elder Ephraim from Filotheou monastery Mount Athos. You will love it if you go there. Its an oasis in the middle of the desert. My spiritual father is in Roscoe, New York (Saint Nektarios monastery)which is another of his monasteries that he founded in the USA. A beautiful monastery as well with great loving fathers.
Here's a link to the holy elder Ephraim life and monasteries he founded. GLORY TO GOD☦

I'm planning on practicing to be orthodox Christian when I get my driver's license so I can go to a Russian orthodox Christian church. But I don't have any room in my house for a icon wall / prayer room. but my garage I where I'm at mostly. Could I put a prayer wall in my garage. As long as I'm not disrespectful to the Lord by doing that. And when saying Lord jesus christ son of God have mercy on me a sinner. Could you chant it?

    • @OrthodoxGardener
      @OrthodoxGardener  2 роки тому +4

If that is where you spend most of your time and you don’t put anything next to it that would distract from its meaning that is fine. If possible, a wall where you are facing east is preferable. I would also suggest, if possible, you visit different Orthodox churches and set up appointments to visit each priest, as he will most likely be your father confessor if you become Orthodox and you want to ensure a good connection. Chanting the Jesus Prayer is a good method if that is what you prefer at the beginning, but I need to slow it down so I can focus more intently on the words and pray from the heart. May God bless your journey.
      Glory to God!

"He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves, that they were righteous and looked down on everyone else: “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee was standing and praying like this about himself: ‘God, I thank you that I’m not like other people-greedy, unrighteous, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give a tenth of everything I get.’
“But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even raise his eyes to heaven but kept striking his chest and saying,
*‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner!’*

May God be praised forevermore !!!
I don't know how you're praying now but an orthodox sign and mark himself with the sign of The Holy Cross, three fingers together simbolising The Holy Trinity, on the forehead, stern/belly, right shoulder and left shoulder, thus revealing he belongs to Christ thru The Cross He sanctified, crossing ourselves in the name of The Father, The Son and of The Holy Spirit, Amen !!!
Without making the sign of the Cross on ourselves, our prayers just look like a speach, we say something but we do not affirm with gestures but only with words, we have to mark us belonging to Christ, if we want to belong to Him, among other things we need to do, or at least that's my understanding.
Understandably wanting to help the others, you shown how you pray, otherwise as Christ said something like: When you pray, shut your door so nobody knows, beside your Father in Heaven Who will hear your prayers. We mark ourselves with the sign of the Cross at the beginning of our prayers, usually three times and at the end again.
Thank you for your videos and showing the right church and path, although i'm affraid that those tools as PCs, telephones, electronic, digital, waves of all sorts and internet aren't pleasing God but in the contrary, might be sins to own and use them.
Another thing which the orthodox try to do if they can, is to light candles with matches, avoiding lighters.
May God have mercy on us all.

Hello Sarah! Orthodox is an ancient Christian faith that has been practiced since the time of the Apostles. It separated from the Catholic Church in 1054, over a number of issues, including the supremacy of The Pope - The Bishop of Rome. It has been mainly situated in the East ( Greece, Russia, Ethiopia, Bulgaria, Serbia etc ) but it is gaining converts, such as myself, from American Protestant churches.
Hope this helps, but I would also encourage you to visit an Orthodox church (I'm a member of The Orthodox Church in America - OCA) to see a Liturgy service and stay after to speak with a priest. They are very open and friendly.
      May God Bless You!
