Willie Mays was a great of the game. He and Babe Ruth we the best two ever. I am not going to rank them here as to which was better. It is too hard to keep race out of it. One group will say one another group will say the other. for me they were both great and that is enough for me.

One of few things that the Giants organization has done right all along was to honor Mr. Mays. That statue is glorious. Most of us only knew him as the legend, the elder statesman, and an ambassador for the sport of baseball. He did even those things spectacularly. Thank you, Mr. Mays.

I remember Willie when he came to Kailua Hawaii at an auto dealership in the fall of 1968, with a few teammates. Bobby Bonds, Juan M. etc. I’ll never forget it. Our little newborn was just about 2 months old. Aloha,LeiD

My first sports hero. I remember being about eight years old, just discovering baseball and watching my first MLB all star game in the 1965 season. This one black player was introduced and the crowd immediately jumped to their feet with a rousing standing ovation that lasted a while. Growing up black in the Deep South during those years of segregation and racial tensions, l was amazed by the respect shown that black man at that time in history amongst all that turmoil. This was still less than twenty years since Jackie Robinson was initially disrespected in every way possible. That player was Willie Mays. Back in those days we only had two (clear) television channels and one tv game a week, so whenever l saw Willie Mays (maybe once or twice a season) it was something special.

That’s impressive that they produced the obituary montage within 20 minutes of his passing. 4:00 but I heard once, that news stations already have a obituary montages produce in advance of somebody famous, that’s getting up there in age.

Willie Mays just didn’t became the Natural, but he is The Natural. Once a Giant, Always Forever a Giant that the baseball world will never be the same. What a legendary career. One of the 5 greatest African-American players to ever step foot in Major League Baseball. Just like Hank Aaron and Jackie Robinson, they broke color barriers and helped paved the way for future Black players turning into champions like Barry Bonds, David Ortiz, etc. God speed Willie, thank you and you will forever be remembered.

I don’t think many people know that Willie Mays was “on deck”, when Bobby Thompson hit the “Shot heard round the world”, in 1951 against the Dodgers.

Vernon misstated Willie's problem buying a home. The owner of the home didn't want to sell because of Willie's race. The city was outraged. The Mayor, George Christopher let Willie stay at his home until the issue was solved. The owner was almost run out of town and relented and the sale went thru.
