Righteous Brothers - Shindig Appearances (1964-1966)

  • For the most of non-music fans, The Righteous Brothers sang only two songs: "Unchained Melody" and "You've Lost That Loving Feelin." This is understandable, considering the fact those songs were both used in hugely popular hit movies: the former in "Ghost" and the latter in "Top Gun" (Tom Cruise sings it at a bar, you remember?). But the fact is, The Righteous Brothers are much more versatile artists than you think, whose songs cover from ballads to blues and exciting 100 % ultra-pure rock'n'roll. Watch this video, and you will know.
    The show begins with the sizzling "Justine," an Isley Brothers style number that rocks the studio. After that, the brothers' stream of songs never stops, including rock number "Ko Ko Joe" and of course "You've Lost That Feelin." During the course they even share a microphone with The Blossoms. Interesting thing is the scene in which "Unchained Melody" is sung -- I rather naively thought the number was sung by Bill Medley, but you see only Bobby Hatfield on TV.
    Anyway, this volume is a good collection of songs, and as they sing the songs LIVE, the exciting feeling goes up double!! And if you're fond of the group, check out "Frat Party" of the same "Shindig" series. In that one, they sing one song "Let That Good Time Roll." Grooooovy, yeah!!

    I had commented on the group, but there is no comparison to Bobby Hatfield. To me, he makes the duo and listening to him is like listening to an angel. I don’t know where one could find a voice like that anymore. He was a very down to earth, a humorous man with an incomparable voice and the world lost something when he passed away. I was very glad that I got to see him in Philadelphia.

    Wow! What memories. Thank you for sharing this. 1964 I was 17 graduated Art school New York City. I remember watching Shindig. I’ve lived abroad since 1975 so seeing this is a particular treat.
    What is also unique here is that we see black and white singers and dancers onstage together on television.
    Most USA sponsors had vehemently rejected and objected to white people and black people performing together. That was why in the 50s the brilliant Nat King Cole show was cancelled. Pressure was brought to bear on the network by the sponsors . This was particularly a problem for shows that were broadcast nationwide which meant all of the most bigoted and racist states as well as the others.
    Of course none of us knew this information back then except for television executives. Unfortunately.
    there were some people who try to resist and fight this attitude. Ed Sullivan was one. But he had a lot of power and influence so he invited people onto his show whether the network or sponsors agreed or not but he was a rarity .

    • @Elisa-ul2we
      @Elisa-ul2we Місяць тому

      You're turning this into a black racism only issue, if you know about the RIbs they first performed to black servicemen, who only went to see them by accident thinking they were black. There were many black radio stations which refused to play them because they were white...it worked both ways, but the Brothers were colour blind, like most of us in the 60s. I lived in the UK and watched performers of every colour. The hate has been stoked for political reasons where it never existed.

    Incredible Righteous Brothers, I can't get enough of this era when they were singing and having fun, something they seemed to have lost in the Phil Spector years. Bobby's amazing talent as a solo artist was sadly never realised for reasons which seem inexplicable now. He was unique and for me Stay With Me (Baby) was the song he should be remembered for, although it went largely unnoticed. Beautiful song, beautiful man, such a loss to the world of music but thankfully, we still have plenty to remember him by.

    On their lp's they both sang an individual song (Georgia On My Mind, Unchained Melody) & a spiritual song, like In that Great Gettin Up Morning. I was honored to see them live in 1965, 1968, 1978, & 1990 thru 2003 In Boston & Vegas until Bobby's death. I got to know Bobby & the band thru all of the 90's until his death. He & the band were normal, regular people. No pretense! Bobby said he was honored & lucky to have had the career that they had & would continue to tour until he embarrassed himself. Little did we know that 10 years later he would be dead. He was very humble. I thank him & miss him for the VOICE he gave us! Thank you to everyone who has posted videos of The Brothers. It's so great to see them again when they first started out on Shindig. It's ironic that The Beatles took over the music scene, but The Brothers have the number #1 played song ever. Eat your heart out Beatle lovers. They couldn't hold a candle to The Brothers.

    Unbiased view (but I am from the UK so you may judge it as bias). I’m crazy over The Beatles because they were so talented and pioneering with their songwriting however Bobby’s vocal ability way surpassed any of the Beatles’ voices. Personally I wouldn’t compare the two, I think both The Righteous Brothers and The Beatles deserve credit in their own right. See that’s coming from someone who is a massive Beatles fan and also a massive Righteous Brothers fan. Why can one not like both, they are not comparable? I don’t rate Elvis, that’s just my choice but I acknowledge that without Elvis The Beatles probably wouldn’t have existed. I also think that Bobby’s 1965 live performance of Unchained Melody is the greatest live performance of all time. Why compare and criticise The Beatles, my sister loves Led Zeppelin and can’t stand The Beatles but acknowledges that they had a massive impact on music that came later, including LZ.

    I watched Shindig back in the day, primarily to see them. What I find humorous now is that I didn't pay any attention to that girl named Donna Loren and that guy named Glen Campbell when they sang hits of the day -- because they weren't the "original artists" -- I was stuck on original artists. The Righteous Bros may have sung songs they didn't do but that was okay.

    Looking at the credits at the end it took me by surprise how many of the 'groups' I used to watch live in the West End of London had appeared on Shindig. The Animals, Herman's Hermits, The Hollies, The Beatles ( not the Stones for some reason, The Small Faces (Rod Stewart), The Yardbirds, Manfred Mann and Steve Winwood, Georgie Fame and the Blue Flames, and so many others, including Aretha Franklin live in Cardiff too in the 90s from my balcony opposite the Millennium Stadium...what a performer. But I'd swap them all now for a chance to see Bobby and Bill live...there was no-one who came close for me, especially Bobby Hatfield....nothing but regrets he passed me by until it was too late.

    Phenomenal talent developed after years of performing SOCAl nite clubs featuring a combination of Rock, Blues and early soul styled after Don and Dewey. Bobby emerged as the Deacon with the unmistakable gospel wail with 1st tenors vocal acrobatics often singing out of his range with Bill carrying the lower baritone leads, impeccable pairing. I used to call them a “white Ruffin to Kendrick”, but they were original trendsetters in melodic Pop and early Soul. Another detail, notice late Fanita James stealing the show with her part on Nite and Day sounding like a toned down Etta James., I knew she was spectacular, just never heard her blow like she owned the show. What a beautiful group of performers, all 8 of them.

From memory the American Dairy Association sponsored this show and their short adverts popped up all the time. I think the end of the song was cut short to allow for the commercial. Hadn't realised what a good song it was until I re-listened to it.

    This is what is known as "Blue-Eyed Soul." If you like this one, then I highly recommend listening to "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" by the same guys. It will absolutely blow your mind!

    'I need your loving everyday' is missing but a great collection, thanks! Any chance it could be included as I think it was performed on Shindig?

      I came here specifically looking for this full version of Unchained Melody. Other channels have poor quality footage and have the movie ghost spliced in. Bobby is sooo smooth and suave in this performance with his moves and of course an extra helping of his "Blue Eyed Soul" in this performance compared to others.

      I think of the version on The Andy Williams Show as romantic/spiritual and of this version on Shindig as sexual/soulful, and he has a sexy twinkle in his eyes when he sings "I gotta have a little of that love". I love 💕 both versions, and other versions too.

    They seem to be having a lot of fun with their playful lip-synching on Justine.

      Shindig was live. Lip - synching wasn't done

      @@DianeAccettullo-yr1ht Says who? There is no way that they could be playing with the microphone like that and have their voices still sound that perfect. With no mic noise. Look at 2:25! Bobby's mouth isn't even moving when that lyric kicks in.

      They mix the sound right on the stage. I looked at Bobby he yelled Justine on cue. Another comment mentioned that Shindig was live. Maybe you are looking for things not there. Dislike the Righteous Brothers or the song ?

      @WhatHaveIMade 2 місяці тому +1

      @@DianeAccettullo-yr1ht That 2:25 isn't "Justine". It's "Do you feel alright", which is not at all synched up to the video. Maybe you need glasses and/or a hearing aid? They absolutely do perform live on some Shindig appearances. This isn't one of them.

      Just because the video is out of sync doesn't mean the performance was lip synced. Also, the old microphones picked up everything around them. @@WhatHaveIMade

    The only sad thing on these shindig shows is the dancers. Theyre so stiff and controlled by the moral compass of the times in white america. But the Brothers loosened up that stiffness.

      Those dancers don't look stiff to me! Sounds like you have a jealousy hangup...Also it's good for people that live in a civilized country to have a moral compass....You also seem to have a problem with white America back then but in any event it was hands down better then morally and culturally then it is now with the disgusting Twerking and girls talking and singing about WAP! Some people like Trash and being around Trash...Not Me!

    The dancers ? for Justine ,shouldn't of been there, annoying and they were blocking the band and back up singers,
