I have to comment on her skillful use of vibrato in this song. It provides just the right accents in all the right places. A good example of this is in the climax at 2:35. While she sings "Cathy", she slowly alters the overtones in the note and finishes with that lovely vibrato. Good stuff.
You know what? I've been thinking that some songs belong exclusively to the artists who wrote 'em and sang' em and that they are the only ones able to perform. You made me change my mind, this is the best cover EVER of such a difficult track like this. Congrats!
Just because a genius songwriter creates a masterpiece, it doesn't always necessarily follow that they're the best ones to perform it. Kate Bush's songwriting and understanding of the story themes was nothing less than brilliant, but I find her voice nasal and unpleasant to listen to, and her performance excessively emo and over-the-top both vocally and physically. Hayley Westenra and this singer, Jess Anderson, do a better job of performing it than Kate Bush did. Which is not to detract from Kate Bush's creative genius, mind you. It's just my opinion that a beautiful, nuanced voice sounds better singing a beautiful, nuanced song than a loud, harsh, nasal, little-girl voice with little subtlety. This song requires subtlety and nuance, as well as a beautiful, flexible voice. Jess Anderson has those things in spades. Very lovely performance!

But as with everything there are different interpretations, which is the case with this song, too. So I can understand preferring a softer approach.

In my opinion, Jess, your rendition of the original supersedes the original in performance and pitch. So clean, so beautiful, not a hit of a nasal note. Bravo! Well done! Never stop singing!

I was in London back in 1978, I went to a record store after hearing this song on the radio. I fell in love with it, even though I could barely make out the lyrics. British singers often twist and turn their lyrics to add flair to their performances. When I finally got the album and the lyrics, I couldn’t get the song out of my mind. This rendition is so beautiful 💖, and with clearly pronounced lyrics. The only thing it needed was to leave that beautiful guitar solo at the end, which finishes the song perfectly, like a sunset on the horizon .

Such a stirring song and lyrics...I love the subtle ghostly twist on this which tells a story on its own....but I am now listening to different people sing this and yes you have hit the nail on the head. And the lyrics punch out their meaning as you sing it. Beautiful.
