thats actually a good step in the right direction for google with right to repair. not only allowing the repair but actually providing supported tools to the community to facilitate said repairs. i tip my hat to you google.
This is all good and well, but when are the parts going to be supplied, they discourage repairs when they don't provide one parts and only supply them to their authorized repair partner
This is the repair model that I want to see. Being able to both recalibrate and verify that a part is genuine makes repair much more feasible. The question is if Google will make the parts available for purchase.
"and verify that a part is genuine " as long as this part is not a blocker for repairs. If a Pixel is several years old, and a cheap Chinese knockoff part can make it "at least work fine" where an original part would be too expensive to fix the phone at that point, then "verifying that a part is genuine" as a way to block 3rd party screens is not helpful.
@@rufmeister I just needed to replace the ear speaker. Original parts are NOWHERE to be found. The modern age has supply chain issues up the ying yang. I had to buy a knock-off. It works, what else can I say. It was also 10$ with 2 day shipping. Many people no longer have land lines and use cell phones for both personal and work. When things go down you need a repair ASAP. Assurion (UbreakIfix) is not officially supported by Google, but they will not sell parts and most things are out of stock everywhere, basic things like a screen. Cheap knock-off parts have their place (be real, ALL parts, genuine or not, are Chinese).
Just curious, what would you say your top 3 phones of this year were? Anticipation wise For me it was (in order) 1. Z fold 3 2. Pixel 6 (and pro) 3. Note 21 ultra (obviously it never came) 3.( Runner up) iPhone 13 Pro Max
@Cody Murphy If you think that, you've to rethink about it because this year they've completely re-designed the pixel with tensor soc and also chnged the sensors. It's not just another pixel and it's not overpriced like before
Honestly the online publicly accessible calibration is incredible, and more companies should follow this model. Hopefully Google don’t take down the calibration servers after a year though.
Great vid. Easy screen repair is nice to see as well as battery. Hope more phone makers follow the owners right to repair. This has convince me to replace my Samsung with the Pixel 6 Pro when the are finally in stock
While im very glad google has done this, it also raises the question: what will happen when the phone goes EoL? Will the web-tool just vanish into thin air, or a standalone version will be available?
I have very similar questions! I hope, like everything else on the internet, someone copies and preserves it just in case Google does randomly kill the tool. Maybe iFixit should find a way to integrate software tools like this into our site 🤔
@@iFixitYourself This is why right-to-repair _laws_ are important. It's nice if a manufacturer does something voluntarily, but there are no repercussions if they change their mind. Only regulation can guarantee that such tools necessary for repairs stay around.
Hello, thank you for this tutorial. I fixit's camera replacement video shows a coper foil on the back of the phone that attached to the 5g antennae on the top. They show it being peeled back. It is so thin and the adhesive doesn't let it be removed without falling apart. Replacement cameras do not include this foil. What do you recommend? I found copper foil tape for electronics, but they are much thicker and I am not sure if the underside of the foil should be conductive or not, it is available in both.
When will mobile phone manufacturers finally realize that making their phones easy to repair will result in more sales. A wise phone company could use repairability as a marketing tool to increase market share. If people discover that their phone cannot be repaired at a reasonable cost they will probably buy their next phone from someone else. I bought a Pixel 6 and I'm pleased to know that my phone can be worked on if I damage it.
I feel like there's shade between iFixit & Google. iFixit didn't do a teardown of the pixel 5 last year despite it being very repairable IMO as a repair tech. They're VERY late with their vid on the Pixel 6 series (Note* they get their hands on Apple products FAST!) and when they FINALLY do the teardown; the title is, "Google Actually Did Something Right!!" Y'all good?
Lol! No shade. 😄 Our teardown team has been overworked and understaffed for a while, so we're just trying to be strategic about what we do and don't tear down until we're back operating at full capacity. That means we do miss some of the good ones, like the Pixel 5!
Great video sir!! Quick question I replaced my screen and now the phone will not recognize the Sim card would you have any recommendations or if anyone else is reading this would you have any recommendations? Thank you!!
My only gripe about the web tool to recalibrate the fingerprint sensor is what you mentioned - being killed by Google. If they release an offline version of the software, I will give them props for it. Close but no cigar yet.
@@Slayyyaphine Google hasn't updated the tool for several months at the time of my comment leaving a known and common bug blocking people from recalibrating the sensor.
They have the power to make their phones irreparable. By the same token, We as consumers also have the power not to buy such a device. Screw you Apple. You ain't getting any of my hard earned Dollar.
I dont know what is special (or premium) about these under display fingerprint scanners? Either on the Lock button on under the display.. they both will do exactly same thing that too with the similar input. The side mounted FPS are much faster than the in-display ones.
Is this a silly question?! I have no idea why iFixit would not do a complete tear down of the Google Pixel 6 and 6 Pro. This is THE phone to look out for this year.
You would have needed to show the new tensor chip since it's the first with the new processor. How can this teardown skip this part. Or maybe it was left for Jerryrigeverything to explore ??
still curious why the heck those batteries cannot be added as in old school samsung galaxy s2. remove back panel, change the battery, put it back. Plus you can have 2-3-4 batteries at home, at office. Would be the easiest way to swap it. Plus let's say whenever you are changing battery, - extra little battery will keep a phone on for 30 seconds without a reboot.
@@human91319 Never ever had any issues with galaxy S2. Never ever inside part got any water. I think it is just because they wanted us to be "always online" and they wanted us to pay for expensive repairs. Tensor might use some similar components to Exynos but the core configuration is completely different. Google went with two X1 cores instead of one and A76 mid cores instead of the A78. Tensor isn't fully custom google designed silicon but I think it's too different to be called a modified 2100. It's more like if Google were to make an Exynos chip it would be Tensor. Kinda like if there was a Lego kit and Samsung built it one way for the 2100 and Google took the same Lego kit and built it a different way to get Tensor.
