Alright the Outro earned the sub from me. "Shite?, well you watched it" had me chuckle. I've seen your stuff several times before but had to make sure I was actually subbed after some of the funny stuff in this video. Cheers for the tips and I really can't wait to get me some sable brushes...
Hi Alex... My partner has watched your videos with me and watched me the past few months building and painting my miniatures and has decided to get into the painting side of the hobby herself! We both love your work and thank you for all your help in the past and my painting has come on massively from my first models from the help you've given and your tutorials. Thank you! Simon
I'm a few months in and this helped loads. I do now take more time building. I also use spare bits to practice on like nmm, which I still have to get right
I think the biggest tip I had already picked up from you (but was glad and not surprised to see) was brushes. I ordered both Monument Hobbies and Hawk brushes on your recommendation and was amazed at how big of a difference a decent brush made. The biggest take away from this video for me is probably letting my layers dry completely... I could probably drastically cut my painting time and get a smoother finish by slowing down for dry time. Thanks for another great video!
Ah great to hear the brushes made a difference - easily the smallest change with the biggest impact I think. I'll need to come up with a few more obscure tips :)
@@alexpaintstinythings I'll hop over to discord but for the algorithm I'm excited to see your video on magnification. I use one of those desk mounted magnifiers with a built in light but feel like I gotta bury my face in it to get the mini in focus and then I fog up the lens... I may just need new glasses though...
My one piece of advice is lighting, get a good desk light with multiple light modes (blue, orange-yellow, natural, etc). Bonus points if it has some form of magnifying lens built in. Trying to paint under poor lighting conditions just makes everything harder than it needs to be and the color of light will definitely change the look of the paint.
If you’re in the US, or even in general I HIGHLY recommend Minotaur Hobbies brushes. W&N quality at rosemary costs. I love em. I totally agree, a decent size 1 and size 0 is all you need. As a beginner, I hated having to fight my brushes.
@@alexpaintstinythings I sent them a message specifically with your username and gave you a follow. I’m kind of a brush whore so I have Raphael to game envy, all different. I am quite fond of the Minotaur brushes. Maybe arrange for a review?
@@bvshmaster6990 Thank you - yeah I'm also a bit of a hoarder brush-wise, and I want to find a good set to recommend for those stateside, since I firmly believe Kolinsky Sable doesn't have to cost the earth :)
WHAT! Ultramarines are blue?!? lol. The brushes comment, couldnt agree more. Good sable brushes with and fine tip and good size belly are a definite help! As for not needing every paint in the line... HERETIC! We can no longer be friends Alex. 8^) There is something to that as well though as much as I hate to admit it. I still want more paints though!
So, I picked up the GodHand nippers and they've definitely been INCREDIBLE - but since a lot of my audience are fairly new, I'm wary of telling people to spend 50 quid on some clippers unless they're serious about it - it's defo been amazing and a big improvement, but I suspect many people would be reeling at the price. I will consider mentioning it in future though - a keen eye will spot them on my desk during the wet pallette cutaway :D
That's quite a big question, but I can definitely help (as can many of our Discord members) - feel free to jump on and ask, and we can help you pick the right thing - I realise there is so much out there, and so many places to start, so it's worth asking and where to start will probably depend on what you want to achieve, what part of the hobby you're interested in etc - happy to help :)
And do you think you’re more interested in the gaming aspect or the painting/collecting side? Obviously models, hobby gear and paints is a good start (I have a video on beginner kit) but for gaming you might just want quick & easy for the painting side and then you’re looking for rulebooks and terrain etc. if you fancy it (and haven’t already) the Discord is a handy place where we can give you much more info and help :)
Your videos have arrived at a perfect time! Just getting back into minis via Kill Tram! Have Tau Pathfinders, they are tiny! Have magnifying glasses arriving today, and i guess I should wash mini after assembing as will be covered in finger grease?
Washing isn't necessarily required - primer should go onto handled plastic OK. Especially if you're spraying it. It's more about when you're touching the mini accidentally after you've primed it but while you're brushing on paint. I don't think I've ever washed a mini (even resin ones, which they reocmmend!)
Great tips! Looking forward to the brush maintenance-video! Maybe have some examples of what *not* to do with your brushes if you want them to last and some examples of shit brushes that hook?
Its funny, almost all these things improved the quality of my painting overnight. Wet pallete and picking up some Raphael 8404s were big ones. I would add, having a permanent modelling desk and an airbrush.
Ah yes - a permanent setup is a good one for sure. Airbrush - in a sense yeah, but I know a lot of people don't have one, and it's a reasonably high barrier to entry on those. Glad to hear we're on the same page though tips-wise!
@alexpaintstinythings hilariously I caught this vid last night, at the end I was like 'hmmm I need some magnifyer glasses', then your next vid popped up. Talk about perfect timing.
i bought the hawk brushes set. thinking it was cheap enough to see if mini-painting alex is a liar or not. and by the paint gods, it delivers! thank you for this tip and i can confirm it's true. far better than the cheaper kolinskys here in sweden
Spoiling us with another one.... Cheers Alex another nice little video, if you haven't already please consider setting up a Patron, I for one would throw a little more your way for your awesomeness. UK people, Hawk Miniatures just reopened the store page after Christmas, got the deluxe pack. Absolute bargain for £20 for the quality you get too!
It’s definitely on the roadmap but I just haven’t worked out what I can offer people for their hard-earned yet. Maybe a kofi donations type thing would work in the meantime. And yep - Hawk re-up coming later this month stock-wise!
Question is speed paint and contrast paint better for beginners bec i really don't want to mess up painting because on UA-cam there's way to many people saying different things my head is already spinning
It's not a case of better or worse in my book - just a different approach. Speed paints can be a quick way to get reasonable results, especially if your focus is gaming - but if you want to learn to paint really well, they might end up becoming something you want to move away from (in order to control your own shadows and highlights) - it's really up to how you use them too - you can use them like glazes in some cases and they're handy but personally I prefer just regular paint, and putting in shadows and highlights myself :) Feel free to jump on the Discord and ask more. Happy to help!
Alex paints i really enjoy your videos but for people outside of the United kingdom could you please mention brands you recommend or consider a good for kolinsky brushes.
So my first instinct would be Monument Hobbies - not as cheap as Hawk in the UK but their brushes are great and you can get a little discount with my affiliate link in the description. I did have a look for others though and I have a note somewhere on another video about them. I think also Rosemary & Co deliver to Canada and are not too bad cost-wise.
@@alexpaintstinythings thank you very much man I appreciate it a lot. I'm personally painting necrons but I hope to see you paint a silver space marine (doom eagles) in the future. We also saw your video about the army painter starter set as we bought it as our starting paint set

If you don't like gloves you can use barrier cream instead and it will prevent the oils from getting on the model
Nice! And the cream doesn't transfer?
@@alexpaintstinythings nope. its fairly waxy so you'd know if it does. This is an old oil painter's trick so they dont get paint on their hands
