    The simple fact is that Jimmy didn't have the authority to run a commercial without the firm's permission. Doesn't matter how great the commercial is.

    • @lordescanor1365
      @lordescanor1365 2 роки тому +16

      I do understand that however to me the response Jimmy got from the firm was a bit of an overreaction if you consider all the facts. First off Jimmy was new to working directly with firms in general where he actually needs to keep his bosses in the know, he has been typically working by himself. In addition to this he was told that they were open to the commercials which could have been a sort of greenlight for someone who isn't used to working with others closely. I agree they should be a bit upset and should clarify to him for the future that he has to report to them more closely, not treat him like a monster or a failure. They were far too harsh the way they reacted especially since this was a successful commercial. Another thing is I imagine having an effective person who can brings results is an asset, and Jimmy has only been an asset. I really feel bad for Jimmy since their response was to cage him in like an animal as if he truly screwed the whole firm resulting in Jimmy being pushed further away from just a good lawyer with colorful techniques to more of a crooked lawyer.

      @@lordescanor1365 that's nonsense. Jimmy knew what he did was wrong. He just assumed that he'd only get a slap on the wrist once the partners saw how effective the commercial was.
      Don't forget Jimmy worked at HMM for years. This isn't his first experience at a firm.
      And as Cliff correctly points out in the next episode, it's not worth risking the firm's reputation with all their other clients for one case.

      Jimmy worked in the mail room for HMM not a lawyer which is completely different. As a lawyer he has more independence and that's exactly what he has been used too for the entire series. Even if he did understand he shouldn't have done it, he couldn't have understood how severe it was. Again I know Jimmy was wrong to do it the way he did but looking at all the facts there shouldn't have been that harsh of a response. Also could you explain one thing for me as this is something I never really understood. The whole risking the firms reputation, I mean how is what that commercial did was such a risk. I get that have different clients with different needs but are the other clients really gonna care if the firm works on a huge case helping the elderly? I feel like that's a positive to what the firm can accomplish, though I sure there could be minor concerns of the firm prioritizing them more but would it be hard for them to calm those concerns with a simple call to any concerned clients? Maybe I'm missing something here so if you could clarify that I would very much appreciate it.

      I'm not making excuses for him, I know he was wrong like I said. But there are legitimate facts to be considered and certain responses that are more appropriate for certain things. You hadn't really dismissed the facts I stated. Rules are important but that doesn't mean the best response is to go ballistic over the first non harmful offence that was more positive than negative, and proceed to treat him like a prisoner and suffocating him. A simple warning for the future would have been more than enough but they were far more extreme.

    The biggest corporate clients with the deepest pockets and greatest legal needs seek law firms with prestige and a reputation of strength. They want the kind of firm that people know by name and reputation already, and seek out without solicitation. Not the kind of firms that need to advertise on TV to attract business. This is what the partners are concerned about. It's about maintaining their image and how that will affect future business more than concern with legal compliance.

    Within the bounds of what is officially legal, there are still two different ways to practice law. I think the issue here the show is dealing with is reputation and the kind of lawyer one might be. Chuck upholds a standard of decorum and sense of dignity and believes the profession should be concerned with the details of morality. Whereas Jimmy cares about getting results, and isn’t ashamed or embarrassed to get results by any means necessary. In fact, he’s proud of himself for it. “Look what I did!” Jimmy’s new firm also has a very good reputation and sees themselves, like Chuck does, as totally different and above slimy lawyers who make commercials. A tale of two ways to practice law. We obviously know what path Jimmy eventually chooses.

    The AMD lawsuit was unfortunate because it wasn't actually wrongdoing on a technical level. The CPU did have as many cores as they claimed, however some parts were shared between 2 cores like floating point math, scheduling, decode, and L1 cache. The scheduling and decode were designed to handle the workload of 2 integer pipelines and 1 floating point, while the floating point was compromised because it's less often used in most tasks. You could possibly argue both sides, but it did physical have the advertised cores.
    AMD settled because the time spent arguing such a technical thing wasn't worthwhile and not guaranteed to win a jury over that probably doesn't understand.
    Floating point is any math that is not a whole number, decimal places.
    Integer math is whole number math only.

    You guys need to watch the Mythbusters about bullets being fired straight up into the air. Fact is that they fall back to earth at a very slow speed and can't actually kill anyone... A bullet falling at the speed of gravity isn't lethal.

    • @TheRabittor
      @TheRabittor 2 роки тому +5

      Well i feel like what you are stating here is incorrect. A quick browsing on the web will show you that people are dying because of this. There are even instances of airplanes that were shot down by a "celebratory fire". Falling bullets in a 90 degree angle are traveling with a speed greater than 61 m/s (200km per hour) which is more than enough to penetrate human body. The speed is even higher if your barrel deviates from 90 degree angle by a tiny amount. Humans are not robots when you are shooting in the air you do not hold 100% perfect angle. Adding to that falling bullet is more likely to hit someones head which isnt a good idea.
      I love muthbusters myself, although i havent seen this particular episode weirdly enough. But even if they came to this conclusion that is not 100% proof that a falling bullet is not lethal. And even if the force is not lethal it still can injure someone enough that he will need to seek medical attention or things will go bad. Besides articles there are videos about this.
