Her voice continued declining due to her bad work-life balance (3 hours of sleep) until 2001 where she was hospitalized. After that, she started taking care of her voice, revealing her second vocal prime from 2002 - 2005. So we heard some days of her voice sounding good in Butterfly when she slept well. But a whole era of good vocals was between 2002 - 2005.
Mariah didn’t cancel the daydream tour. It was just a very short tour. It was technically still a world tour though since she did each show in a different country I believe
The most common theories I’ve seen for Mariah’s vocal change is a mix of overuse of her voice from performing and recording/the use of alcohol damaging her voice,or a failed surgery on her nodules caused a shift in her voice
Emotional distress does impact the voice and its quality. She was clearly overworked and needed a year or two off but she wanted to get out of her contract so badly that she basically became a machine and did NOT stop until she hit her breaking point.
It was a combination of bad habits: stress, alcohol, marihuana, not sleeping, not doing vocal exercises suggested by her backup singers, partying way too hard etc etc. And just my opinion, but I think she suffered some form of trauma that affected her voice too.
This is a common misconception. Mariah didn’t always have nodules, no one is born with them. She DEVELOPED nodules (probably around 1992) due to bad technical habits resulting from a lack of formal training. Nodules are bumps on the vocal cords that develop due to overuse (straining). Nodules prevent the vocal cords from closing properly, which makes it harder to produce a clear tone (without any airiness).
funny enough her divorces/break ups mark some of her vocal downfalls like 96-97, 2013-14 with nick cannon, 2022-2023 with tanaka, stress can be a huge factor in your voice declining, pair that with nodules, limited sleep and overworking boom vocal fatigue, boom she keeps singing, boom, the voice declines
Why didn't Mariah use the mixing technique more? Okay, so here's the tea on why Mariah Carey is a chest-dominant belter and not a mixer like Ariana or Tori - and it’s honestly kinda wild when you think about it. First of all, Mariah didn’t just wake up one day and decide to belt like a literal powerhouse. It’s her thing. Her vibe. She has this insane ability to belt deep into her chest voice, like her vocal cords are basically made of steel and silk. When you hear her hit those notes in “Emotions” or “Vision of Love,” it's not just power, it’s like rage, passion, and grace all mixed into one. She’s basically like, "I’m gonna sing until the whole world hears me." Ariana and Tori, though, they're more about that smooth, mixed vibe. They like to blend their chest voice and head voice, which is cute, but it’s all about keeping it connected and effortless, you know? Like they’re running a smooth marathon, never breaking a sweat. But Mariah? She’s like, “Nah, I'm gonna break the glass ceiling with my chest voice.” She’s chest-dominant because, from the jump, her whole thing was about raw power. She was trained classically - like opera and musical theater type stuff - which means she learned to push her chest voice hard, making sure her notes hit you like a wave. That’s why she’s iconic when it comes to belting. She doesn’t need to mix. Her chest voice is strong enough to carry her from low to high without turning it into a little whisper fest. Then there’s Ariana and Tori. They both use that mixed voice technique, which is like their secret weapon. The mix lets them sing higher without sounding like they’re struggling or choking on their own vocal cords. It’s smooth, it's flawless, it’s like they glide up their range like an angel on roller skates. They don’t need to belt their lives away because they can blend their chest and head voice, making everything sound chill and connected. It's not that they can't belt - trust, they can - but their thing is all about finesse, fluidity, and making it look effortless. Mariah was never about that life. She was like, “I can do this with my chest voice and make y’all feel it.” Also, let’s talk physiology, because Mariah’s vocal cords are built different. Her body was literally made to belt. Like, no joke. She has this natural ability to get super resonant in her chest voice, so she doesn’t need to mix and balance between registers. She can just throw everything into her chest voice and hit you with a note that feels like it’s been simmering in her soul for years. Ariana and Tori, on the other hand, have more “fluid” voices that make the whole mixing thing come naturally. It’s like their voices are little liquid streams, flowing through their entire range without breaking a sweat. But honestly, Mariah’s whole vibe was about defining herself as a force. She didn’t want to be just another pretty voice that glided through everything. She wanted to make an impact, shake the room, have you feel her songs in your bones. And that’s where the chest voice comes in. Her dramatic belting is all about emotional intensity, not just vocal technique. She’s singing with her whole heart, and you can hear it in the way her chest voice just thunderously takes over. Ariana and Tori? They’re more about making everything sound sleek and smooth. But Mariah? She’s about making you feel something deep inside, even if it’s messy or imperfect. So, yeah, Ariana and Tori are about that smooth mix life. They’re like, “Let’s vibe and be cute, no strain, just seamless.” Mariah, though, was like, “I’m gonna belt this out and give you chills every single time because my chest voice is a force of nature.” It’s not better or worse; it’s just Mariah being Mariah - raw, intense, and untouchable. You can’t have a voice like hers and not use it to leave an impact. And that's why she’ll always be legendary.
Honestly a short answer would be she has a high chest voice and her style was never mixing but that's also the style she's been used to and growing up around that's what she knows.
like at the end, the guy is pointing out the differences in her vocal approach and you cut him off to complain he "didn't explain", you didn't give him a chacne to lol
Well Mariah has said in numerous interviews and articles that she's not a live touring artist she's a studio singer and she has a very fragile gift that needs to rest at least for like about two days.
It’s funny because the daydream world tour was seven shows…okay. Then she had a few performances here and there. Sure she recorded part of the butterfly album during that time. But she had MONTHS, lots of months to rest and regain her voice. This narrative that Mariah was overworked and lost her voice does not MAKE SENSE.
she couldn't take a break. she had divorced the head of her record company and NEEDED to get out of her contract and NEEDED to express herself so mama did what she had to do. the Butterfly era and Rainbow era tone EATS!

Who is Tommy? Tommy Mottola was the absolute villain in Mariah Carey’s story, especially when it comes to their marriage. This man wasn’t just her husband, HE WAS THE OWNER AND PRESIDENT OF SONY...ALL OF SONY...but he was also a straight-up puppet master - and not the good kind, like the one in those creepy doll movies. No, Tommy used their marriage as a way to control her every move, her career, and even her personal life. And let's not forget, she was only 23 when she married him. She was a baby in the industry, barely figuring out who she was, while he was this older, powerful man with a tight grip on everything. Mariah had so much emotional baggage by the time she met Tommy - she came from a broken home, with a dad who was emotionally distant and pretty much bounced on her and her mom when she was young. So, she spent years craving that kind of stability, that love, that security. Tommy saw that. He saw how vulnerable she was and played into it like a game. He wasn’t there to love her - he was there to control her. And honestly, that’s what makes their whole marriage so messed up. Think about it: Tommy was 20 years older than her. He was already in the game, established in the music industry, with power, influence, and resources. Mariah was just a young, hungry artist who didn’t know how to navigate the chaos of the music biz. She was raw and talented, but at the same time, she was just starting to figure out who she was as a person and an artist. Enter Tommy, who swoops in with all the charm and the power, pretending to be the man who’ll protect her and nurture her, when really, he was just building his empire around her. He wasn’t there to support her growth; he was there to make her bend to his will. The fact that they got married when she was so young wasn’t just some fairy tale love story - it was a move for him to cement his control over her. He wanted to be her daddy, but in the worst way. He became the father figure she’d been missing her whole life, and he used that power to keep her isolated and under his thumb. She was already emotionally fragile, and he exploited that, molding her into his ideal pop star - not someone with a voice that could change the world, but just a product, a puppet who had to do what he said. She was under constant surveillance. He had her wrapped around his finger, dictating everything from what she wore to who she hung out with. And let’s not even talk about how he’d show up unannounced at her apartment like some kind of creepy stalker. It wasn’t about love or care - it was about possession. He treated her like property. It was straight-up toxic. And if you think that wasn’t enough, let's talk about how Tommy controlled her career like he controlled everything else. He had her in this box where she couldn’t fully express herself, couldn’t really explore the depth of her voice and creativity because he was more interested in making hits and maintaining his control over her image. Mariah was constantly being molded into this perfect pop princess, but she was suffocating inside. She wasn’t allowed to fully be herself. She wasn’t even allowed to express her own identity without him weighing in, without him deciding what was best for her. Tommy wasn’t just her manager, he wasn’t just her husband - he was a man who saw her as a project. Someone to control, someone to own, and when she started pushing back, when she started showing the world she wasn’t just some helpless little thing under his thumb, he got scared. He didn’t want to lose his grip on her, so he made sure to ruin her - professionally and personally. He played the game like a master manipulator. And the worst part? It took years for Mariah to break free from that. Even after their divorce in 1997, Tommy’s shadow loomed over her career. He was still pulling strings, working behind the scenes to sabotage her, trying to erase her from the public eye as if she were just some failed experiment. Mariah had to claw her way out of the mess he created, and it wasn’t easy. But when she did, it was like a rebirth. That whole period of her life, especially her marriage to Tommy, is one of the darkest chapters in her story. Tommy Mottola didn’t marry her out of love; he married her because she was a way to gain even more power in the industry. She was a means to an end, someone he could shape and control, and he used every emotional and psychological trick in the book to do it. He became her father figure in the most twisted way possible, and honestly, he’s the reason why she had to fight so damn hard to find her true voice again. Tommy Mottola didn’t just control Mariah’s career - he controlled her entire life, and that’s why he’s forever the villain in her story.
One thing about Bruno tho, I wish he would watch the clips and take the informationi and receive it for what it is...he spends so much time and attention trying to challenge the person who took the time to create the video that he's using, instead of focusing on the information at hand. For example, the guy said he was focusing on Mariah's looks and that's what he did, she showed how the woman's appearance changed and Bruno is waiting for dresses and make up. No, the guy was focusing on her appearance and how that symbolized a change within her. Or focusing on the number of dates for her world tours. A world tour means stops in different continents and that's exactly what she did. Stop battling the person who made the original video and just focus on the information and try to stay engaged. Still love your channel but sometimes the ADHD can be a little frustrating. You're still cute tho!
@@harty02_02 right, you get it. and i don't think he means to get side tracked because for him it's like hes having a conversation with us in real time, but for us the viewer it kinda derails the vibe and intention of the video and then it makes me feel bad for the person who actually made the original video that he's now using...like if it were me, i'd feel so embarrassed, angry or belittled to have someone talk badly about something I spent time on that they're not using the benefit off. but again, i don't think he means it maliciously.
@@unbiased503 In the music industry, a "tour" is simply a series of performances by an artist, usually in different cities or countries, over a set period of time. A "world tour" doesn’t necessarily mean a massive, global trek with hundreds of shows. It's more about how the artist markets the event, and there's no strict rule on the number of stops or countries an artist has to visit to call it a "world tour." Mariah Carey’s Daydream World Tour in 1996 is a perfect example of this. While it included less than 10 dates, it was still marketed and recognized as a world tour. The tour took place across multiple countries, including stops in North America, Europe, and Asia. Despite having fewer dates than most major tours, it was still a legitimate world tour because of the global scope. The name “world tour” was about the reach of the performances, not the sheer number of them. Even with a smaller schedule, it was considered a full-fledged world tour because it spanned several continents. Some artists opt for shorter tours for a variety of reasons. For Mariah, her voice is known for being extremely agile, but reaching those high notes and delivering intricate vocal runs can be demanding. Her voice requires more rest and recovery between shows, which is one of the reasons why her Daydream tour was short. Artists also sometimes prefer to do shorter tours for creative reasons-making each performance feel more exclusive or special. A limited engagement builds anticipation and makes the shows seem more unique. Additionally, logistical or personal reasons can come into play. For Mariah, vocal health was a significant consideration. While she was promoting one of the biggest albums of the 90s, she couldn't keep up with a lengthy tour schedule without risking vocal strain. So, even though the tour had fewer dates, it was still a legitimate part of her promotional cycle. Mariah wasn’t the only major artist to do a shorter tour and call it a world tour. The term "world tour" is about the geographical scope, not the number of stops. As long as the tour reaches multiple countries or continents, it can be branded as a world tour, even if it’s only a handful of dates. In the end, Mariah’s Daydream World Tour was absolutely a legitimate world tour. The fact that it was short doesn’t take away from the fact that it spanned multiple countries and was marketed as a major global event. The number of dates doesn’t change the validity of the title. Mariah’s vocal needs and personal circumstances just led to a more limited tour, but it was still a "world tour" by all the standards that matter.
Mixing is mosquito sounding with horrible overtones. Mariah stayed with the classic and preserved her tone. I admire her for that. She kept her difficult technique instead of losing her resonators like most pop singers nowadays.
Also, belting is totally healthy if you do it correctly. Take Shirley bassey as an example. Almost 90 years old and still sings exceptionally. People are too brainwashed by the Koop vocal system, it’s sad. Singing is becoming so much alike that artists are losing their core voice and even overtones.
I think that's why Kelly Clarkson always lower her keys in her songs she sings damn difficult and we know she loves Mariah Carey so I think that why she always cares about her vocal cords because she's always belting and belting... Is just an opinion
@whitneyhouston1122 not back then in full chest voice that's why cost her fatigue... You can't pull chest voice in those highs always it's not a healthy place for signing.
@ Uhm yess Mariah lowered the keys since her first performance! Yes belting those notes out consistently and constantly it’ll always be tiring of course she was singing to her limit daily and that tires out the voice.
Mariah also lowered her keys…multiple times. I think the one who has ADHD is you. The level of ignorance you showcase in your comments is sad. And you call yourself a fan? Okay…
Mariah voice declined because Columbia record kept making her do stuff like recording music and then the tour and then going on interviews. I remember there was an interview where she said that she was supposed to be resting her voice and not talk for a couple days but her record made her go on that interview and they wouldn’t let her rest her vocal
@@virgiliodiego2478 Some fans overrate the kind of songs she is singing. Broadway stars sometimes do two shows a night, opera singers too. Night past night. They still have a voice today. Mariah just did not take care of hers. She was never as overworked as singers such as Celine or Whitney which were her contemporaries.
@ yes she was Mariah’s voice is more agile then normal broadway singers because her nodules also affect her voice since she’s had them for so long and using whistle also affects the voice as it can be bad and broadway singer they do sing high like Mariah’s but Mariah vocal technique is different and that also had a part in her vocal decline as she wasn’t trained like some singers and her quick register changed is also a possibility for her decline in vocals as they are so quick her vocals folds don’t have time to process it even some vocal coaches have said that sometimes there is strain out on her folds
Why are you suprised Mariah was photographed with Diddy?😂 I guess your not aware she worked him. He did the remix on sone if ger songs like Honey and Fantasy
And also mariah songs is so out of this world the level of difficulty... I mean her label is pushing her to make music but she would do a easy and hard songs for her voice but the whole record is difficult... You can have a hit with a easy songs to sing.
there is another reaction you could do is michael bolton and mariah carey singing we're not making love anymore, i belive that this is her first time singing with another ua-cam.com/video/BwV1n7iVUDs/v-deo.html&pp=ygUcd2UncmUgbm90IG1ha2luIGxvdmUgYW55bW9yZQ%3D%3D

Still love your channel but sometimes the ADHD can be a little frustrating. You're still cute tho!
she just diss the creator instead of analyzing whats in the video
@@harty02_02 right, you get it. and i don't think he means to get side tracked because for him it's like hes having a conversation with us in real time, but for us the viewer it kinda derails the vibe and intention of the video and then it makes me feel bad for the person who actually made the original video that he's now using...like if it were me, i'd feel so embarrassed, angry or belittled to have someone talk badly about something I spent time on that they're not using the benefit off. but again, i don't think he means it maliciously.
It’s called having critical thinking?? Doing 6 dates on a world tour is not really touring. Sorry. Cut the delusion.
the video is horrible. Sorry. It did not explain why Mariah lost her voice at all. Never talked about her real issues and bad habits.
@@unbiased503 In the music industry, a "tour" is simply a series of performances by an artist, usually in different cities or countries, over a set period of time. A "world tour" doesn’t necessarily mean a massive, global trek with hundreds of shows. It's more about how the artist markets the event, and there's no strict rule on the number of stops or countries an artist has to visit to call it a "world tour."
Mariah Carey’s Daydream World Tour in 1996 is a perfect example of this.
Mariah’s vocal needs and personal circumstances just led to a more limited tour, but it was still a "world tour" by all the standards that matter.
we don't want Mariah to mix. Mixing is for waifs, Mariah is a powerhouse! I hate mixing.
Please mixing is healthier on the vocal cords and can save her voice and maybe she might've just had a longer voice with Daydream.
Mariah also lowers her keys.
Mariah never really toured don’t exaggerate
@ doesn’t matter if she didn’t really toured it’s her songs I’m talking about because they are so vocally demanding
@@virgiliodiego2478 Nodules don’t make your voice more agile… Shows you know nothing about vocal technique.
You thoughts he was 16 in 1997? So she was 9 when vision of love came out? Lol babe
Yeah this video didn’t explain the best try watching Mariah Carey tone evolution part 2
