The 60s and 70s were very good for growth but we lost our way in the 1979-1980 period. Things got good again in 1983-1986 period. Then Cain and Kurner absolutely levelled the whole state in 89 with Pyramid Building Society..then Kennet got into office in 92, sold everything and got us pumping with casinos, Grand Prixs, Australian Open and this time we got it right and next thing we're the worlds most livable city 7 years in a row!!

We used to have recessions every decade. The 1990 recession was worse.

I thought the City Loop line was being built around this time? So that's a plus. After December 1983 the dollar was floated and the economy was opened up to international banks in September 1984 so things were starting to be done differently than they were as opposed to during the post-WWII boom from 1947-83. Watch the magic after the Australia Acts in early 1986 until Japan goes into recession. After the anti-Soviet revolutions in 1989-1991, the goalposts will shift again to adjust to the rise of China.

Ah yes. Those were the days. Times have changed. This clip even included a few tv commercials of the time. My favourite one was the very High tech ad for the 1981 Toyota Cressida complete with nerdy new wave type music and visual effects.

Oh man I'd rather take 1981 over 2021 without even thinking about here!!! All these problems while I'll admit were a pretty big deal back then seem almost trivial compared to the 21st century here now of the b.s. we have to deal with. I was only 3 via 81 as well now 43... I love how melbourne was back then compared to now and was constantly laughing at all of the issues back then...In 40 years I've seen too much here via this damn city, from the best of 1981 to it's absolute worst via 2021. If could go back in time to back then, I'd be in tears (which is rare for me) and hug every landmark back then (yes even the Yellow Peril later in that decade) of joy I would. Still I love the golden 9 NEWS logo though and atleast Kingston biscuits are still the same....I hate being a melbourian in 2021...Folk back in 1981 don't really know just how good they had it in 1981 and it would get better until the early 90's...That's when it's started to get really bad to the 2021 hell hole we have now....I wish I was in 1981 sigh.....

Of course, the orchestrator of this nonsense is nowhere to be seen but at least he had the good will of a couple of his cronies to do his bidding.
And what's Melbourne like today, compared to then? Well you can't get a job unless you can make a coffee but at least you can get a coffee. Manufacturing is something foreigners do, overseas. Speculating on housing has become more important than having somewhere to live and there's no traffic congestion anymore, that's just traffic.
Well done, our esteemed forward thinking forefathers. You took one of the best cities on the planet and gave it to the dogs.

Extremely agro interview of Premier Hamer, perhaps leading into the evolution of the “fake” news we so despise today. Hamer was brilliant compared to what followed - enter John Cain. His Government at the time was responsible for a popular expression - “Would the last business man leaving Victoria please turn off the lights”, and that’s exactly what l did, at the age of 38, l and my family left Victoria for the Northern Territory and never returned. Victoria at the time was a basket case under successive Cain terms and going nowhere.

Little did anyone know what was about to happen 25 years down the track.. Worlds most livable city 7 years in a row, best economy in the country, by far the higgest population growth rate at 150k a year and boasting over 5 million people! I personally think Jeff Kennett and Alan Stockdale's dedicated work in the early to mid and late 90's, despite their critics, built the foundations for all of this and whilst we might be a bit dazed and confused with Covid now in 2021, we're still No 1 City in Australia. Nothing can take that away from us and we're bouncing back out of this 'Covid mode' quite comfortably, even with the current lockdown. Channel 9 should do a story on us bouncing back! Building industry is going nuts! Theres not even enough building materials and that is a very good sign!
