    In the past, farming was largely an instinctive activity, and the best farmer was the one with the most sense of livestock, fodder, the weather, and nature in general. Today, so much is automated (and even autonomous) that the farmer is a manager on his farm. With an enormous amount of digital support, an attempt is made to generate as much return as possible within the welfare of the animal. I wonder where this will end, but I'm afraid of giant companies with all kinds of robots and only a few people behind the buttons. And that is probably not why they became farmers in the first place. Still, I find your videos extremely interesting, informative and of high quality. Thank you for that.

      I think today we still need to have a vast amount of knowledge about the cows, crops and farming in general. We have access to more tools now that aid us I'm making decisions and measuring the effectiveness of our farming practices. We are able to use technology to help us focus on areas of our farm that need the most attention. We still spend a large amount of time carring for our cows' health and nutrition, but now we are able to use technology to help us focus on cows that most need our attention any given day. I think this could be a good topic to focus on in future videos! I don't believe I would want to be a farmer if it became sitting in an office all day!

      @@pietvanbedaf-nddairyfarmer9047 Thanks, thats awesome. Do you ever have years that the corn silage/earlage aren't high enough in energy/starch? Like would you buy in ground corn grain the same way if needed?

    • @pietvanbedaf-nddairyfarmer9047
      @pietvanbedaf-nddairyfarmer9047  2 роки тому +1

      The first bay in the shed is ground corn, we feed that to our pre fresh and fresh cows instead of earlage to give them a really consistent starch source. We haven't fed that to our other pens before, but would be an option if needed.

    Where do you get your molasses in bulb like that? Many years ago my Brother in law milked a few cows by hand just for his family and he always gave his cows molasses as well. He claimed it produced a better tasting milk. He had a 45 gallon drum with molasses.

    • @pietvanbedaf-nddairyfarmer9047
      @pietvanbedaf-nddairyfarmer9047  2 роки тому +2

      Our molasses comes in bulk from a company called QLF. I call it molasses, but it's actually a molasses based feed supplement.

    • @pietvanbedaf-nddairyfarmer9047
      @pietvanbedaf-nddairyfarmer9047  2 роки тому +1

      Yes, it's easy to see that we're adding the right number of pounds for each ingredient. It also helps us manage the amount of feed left over in each pen so we don't underfeed or overfeed. Typically we would have 1 load after lunch and then getting bales ready for the next day and opening the feed piles if necessary.

    Nice setup, more efficient than the other dairy's that I am watching, however none of them are as big as your's either. Couldn't you push the feed from in front of pen 1 over to the front of pen 2 as some of them looked hungry but there was no feed for them like at 14:50? They are all probably looking for the fresh feed, but if they could eat some of the feed you are throwing out that might be worthwhile and save you a little time.

    • @pietvanbedaf-nddairyfarmer9047
      @pietvanbedaf-nddairyfarmer9047  2 роки тому +1

      It would make loading a little easier, but our plan is to extend the roof over the pit to protect that loading area from wind. That's the main reason we have the pit in that spot.
