Just before the war erupted, about 4,000 young Canadian soldiers were sent to Hong Kong to help the British defend the colony. Sadly, nearly all young souls sacrificed their lives during the battle in Hong Kong. We as Hong Kong residents pay high respect to them.

One other hero of the fight for Hong Kong was Gander (or his original name Pal, donated to the Royal Rifles of Canada as his owner didn't want him put down for scratching a childs face), a huge Newfoundland dog picked up a grenade and run at the Japanese with it, taking a few Japanese with him, and awarded the Dickin medal for his bravery

There is a bronze status in memony of Sergeant Major John Robert Osborn, VC in the Hong Kong Park for his sacrifice in the Battle of Hong Kong. Many defence structures in the battlefield that the Canadians fought so brilliantly against the Japanese are well preserved and are easy accesed to hikers. It's a pity that this UA-cam film has shown no real pictures and video of the Battle of Hong Kong.

Most awkward thing about the battle of HK is the lack of help from Han chinese joining the UK in the fight against japan. A small volunteer unit fought for them, but more embarrassingly a unit comprised of European expats (which are a minority in HK population) outnumbered this HK chinese unit. Which is strange since chinese living under Japanese occupation arguably suffered more than Europeans whom were mainly taken into camps for possible bargaining. Same situation in Malaysia and Singapore and Indonesia non of the chinese populations helped fight the Japanese with the allied armies.

@@menwithven8114 Are you kidding me lmao? Look at the British pacific fleet and see how large it is in 1945 compared to 1944 and you can see UK shifting majority of their resources out of Europe into Asia at that point, they had already made agreements with US about invasions into Mainland Japan and had their own campaigns for invasions into Sumatra and once they concluded the Burma campaign they were going to March on into Malaysia through Thailand. Do you literally not know any of this or are ignorant by choice? If there's any ally that's been absent in that theater its only France that can be mentioned.
Also non of this takes away from my inital point of Chinese under UK empire lack of will to the fight the japanese with them.

You seem to have forgotten the huge contribution the British 14th army made in Burma during 1944. It could be argued that the casualties inflicted on the Japanese at the battles of Imphal and Kohima did a lot to weaken the Japanese forces in that area. As one person is already pointed out the British had enough on their plate in Europe at containing Germany and Italy initially. It was only later in the war that they were able to turn their attention to Southeast Asia and the Pacific.

Hong Kong Island has a series of ridges going from East to West, marked by high points and gaps in between . Starting from the West, you have Victoria Peak (highest point), Magazine Gap, Mount Cameron, Wanchai Gap, Mount Nicholson, Wong Ngai Chung Gap, Jardine's Lookout, Mount Butler, Sanitorium Gap, Mount Parker. The Japanese were coming from East to West in regimental strength. Osborne had a section of men with him. No way he re-took Mount Butler. They got wiped out defending a rock half way down Jardine's Lookout. He fell on a grenade to protect his men - hence the VC. (Japanese regiment = 3 battalions = 12 companies = 48 platoons = 150 sections roughly. )

For the record, there were six regular infantry battalions and one local volunteer regiment fighting in Hong Kong. There was also a force of regionally recruited Royal Artillery (HKSRA) made up mostly of Punjabis, and various other units. The six battalions were Winnipeg Grenadiers, Royal Rifles of Canada, 1st Middlesex (London), 2nd Royal Scots, the 7th Rajputs (Hindu) and the 14th Punjabs (Muslim). The HKRSA were both Muslim and Hindu which was a bit tricky. Quite a few of the Indian men agreed to join the INA after defeat and were posted as POW camp guards by the Japanese. They became traitors for 2 years after the war and then heroes again when India got independence.
