My wife has a 2020 passport. I see a lot of comments on why would someone buy one of these. For us it was towing capacity which is 5000lbs with AWD and the tow package (hitch and trans cooler) installed. The fact that it is a little higher off the ground than the pilot. We didn't need the third row. We got a better deal than we would have gotten on the pilot. Naturally aspirated. Especially considering all the problems people are having with the small turbo Honda's like the civic and CR-V. Very smooth and quiet ride. We paid 35k for an AWD EXL. This was a year and a half ago before prices on everything went completely stupid.
Tow capacity of the Passport is only 1000 pounds unless the trailer has it’s own brakes. This is true of most other vehicles as well. It’s an out so manufacturers don’t have to cover towing related abuse. Since most trailers don’t have brakes a CRV has the same towing capacity as an HD pickup.
Honda's earthdreams turbos have been reliable outside of extreme cold conditions. But I agree that the na engine will outlive a turbo under similar conditions. That's why I traded a 2018 2.Ot manual accord for a 21 ridgeline. I absolutely prefer the V6 AWD combo to the fwd Accord. Despite having fun screeching tires off the line in the accord, the Ridgeline in more satisfying to drive and hear. I image that the passport AWD offers similar driving impressions. I have the 2019 Passport and have been enjoying it very much. I would like to get the Trailsport next. I like the way it’s dives but I also like that I can go a little off road too.
they need to be more upfront with the AWD- it's not what people think it is. The car is FWD and occasionally kicks in the rear if it feels slippage. It's a reactionary system which works ok and is better than FWD alone but it isn't a permanent system like you get with true AWD or 4WD vehicles that can fulltime engage.
@@sly9263 That is true. It’s no 4Runner or Bronco. I’ve found that most front drive crossovers have poor traction management and poor articulation. All the disadvantages of a truck and all the disadvantages of a car in one vehicle. I guarantee you the transmission will fry and the body will yield if you tow anywhere near 5000 lbs.
I would recommend the Outback but definitely get the XT. We love ours and it is smaller, cheaper, faster, better on and off road and better to drive over-all than the somewhat clumsy Passport. The Honda V6 is a great engine though!
This will be extremely successful. Nothing too offensive inside or out, if anything it’ll age well. A name badge might be all it takes nowadays for the lifestyle crowd.
Just got an Outback Wilderness after cross-shopping it with the Passport and 4Runner. Definitely happy with my decision as it's the ideal balance (for my purposes) of on-road and off-road handling.
I absolutely love it...!!! However, some changes are needed. I just HOPE that future iterations of this new model. Particularly the EX-L and up trims allow people to choose the grey leather option on the sonic grey pearl exterior color. For right now from what i've researched only being able to choose from 3 color options; dark blue, silver, and white to get the grey interior leather is VERY limiting. And i think the pairing of grey interior leather with the exterior sonic grey pearl color would be stunning. Having just black too choose from is VERY VERY drab for an interior color option. I also think the grey leather would look stunning on the Trailsport with the orange contrast stitching and badging. It's the main reason i would choose an EX-L over a Trailsport as i simply do not like an all-black interior. And also, Honda needs to offer better options on the EX-L & Elite trims for tire choices. Having just 20in tires with the SUPER awful Continentals is ridiculous. I've read over at the Honda forums that if you want you can go from the OEM 265/45/50 to a 275/45/50 and that will give you a bit more sidewall for blazing non paved trail fire roads etc...And you can still keep your stock OEM rims. But most of all that opens you up too better and more tire choices. Such as an A/T tire like the General Grabber AT3 or the Firestone Destination LE3's. However, hopefully Honda will make these changes themselves so consumers don't have too. It's rather ridiculous of Honda to have a model labeled "Trailsport" but only make it "cosmetically appealing". And really no different than an EX-L or Elite trim. Considering they ALL use the same I-VTM4 AWD system. You can't "off road" Honda on 20in tires that’s just a fact. So either use 18in tires for every model Passport. Or pick a different 20in tire size to broaden people’s choices. It's really not that difficult for them to do. And i'd bet A LOT of folks would agree with me on all of this. So for 2023 please make these changes Honda...!!! Thank you.

The pricing for the Passport doesn't make any sense to me. It's $1000 more expensive than the bigger, more comfortable and overall better Pilot. And for extra $2000 you can get an RDX!
I agree! They make it quite confusing for the consumer. Does it make much sense to buy the Passport? Just get a Pilot or an MDX and keep the rear seats folded down, or get a RDX which has ample storage space behind the second row.
I agree, considering they already offer a CR-V or an RDX (if you want luxury and a perhaps a little faster vehicle) the passport is sort in the middle of the nowhere. If you want some thing bigger the Pilot is there, and it is nicer. If you want something bigger that really looks nice and performa better then there is an MDX or an MDX type S.
Think its a misstep by Honda. They've already "diluted" this new badge before it gets started. If the first impression of buyers for this new badge is "appearance package only", they'll have a harder time changing people's mind vs just doing it properly the first time. Maybe they figured the benefit of cashing in on the off-road craze is worth rushing things.
I think your last sentence says it right, obviously cashing in on the off-road craze. Let's face it, lots and lots of off-road oriented vehicles rarely, if ever, hit the dusty trail. But people want their vehicles to look the part no matter. Been that way for a long, long time. For me, there is little in any true rougher off-roading for hundreds of miles. I'm not really into off-roading anyway so it's moot.

@SmallLab129. The wheels on the PP TS are better for light off roading. Plus, it would be easy to add skid pads to this vehicle. However, I think ground clearance could have been a inch more.
I do not live in the country or mountains this is off road enough. spacious, comfort. The new face looks more aggressive. Worth the cost to me. If I have trouble finding a room at a hotel, the storage space is large enough for me.
The interior is a little too Plain Jane for a vehicle at that price-point. If you're a fan of Honda Corp's overall reliability, once you're into the mid $40's you might as well start looking at the RDX.

Roof rails, navigation, fog lights, wheel and tire package. I test drove the EX-L and TS and there is a difference between the two as the smaller wheels on the TS are better. Reviewers never point out these differences. Inasmuch, no one pays sticker for these vehicles even with the chip shortage - reviewers don't talk about that either because they don't do their homework.
Disappointed in the pricing structure. It’s about $5k too high given the limitations vs how it’s marketed. AWD for $40k; at that price I’d buy a 4Runner or the new Grand Cherokee (without low range) instead due to better aftermarket support to customize it for my liking.
I shopped the New Grand Cherokee and 4Runner against this vehicle. Couldn't find a GC under 54,000 and the SR5 premium on average was 46k. I paid 42k for my Trailsport and got a ton of money for my trade-in, so I am very happy with my decision.
Putting off road tires on the passport would lower its EPA fuel milage rating by increasing friction. I believe that is why you don't see rugged tires on the passport.
As Alex stated at least a dozen times, "TrailSport" is an APPEARANCE package/trim for the time being (with possible physical/mechanical upgrades to come in the future)...
I thought it was the Ridgeline for a sec. I'm surprised that Honda thought the front-end of Ridgeline was so appealing that they could just use it for another vehicle without any tweak.
Not surprised at all since passport is based on Pilot, they share so much similarity that even front end look similar, interior is exactly the same, so they make passport using refreshed ridge line front end totally makes sense.
Because the current Pilot is still the third generation that started in 2016, just with some refreshes. The 2023 will likely be the next, where it will be updated.
People who buy the TrailSport are being duped. The squishy and thick tires are the only thing off-roady about this trim compared to an Elite. It’s a good, honest car, but this trim is not a good deal.
I disagree. I test drove the EX-L and TS - the smaller wheel on the TS makes a difference. Plus, it has navigation, roof rails, fog lights, and some other features the reviewers never talk about.
Only features the TS adds are the things you mentioned, orange stitching on the seats, heated wipers, illuminated beverage holders, amber ambient lighting, 2nd row sunshades, and a power outlet. It doesn’t seem worth $4700 over the EX-L. It might make a little sense if you need AWD since the TS automatically gives that to you over the EX-L. You get CarPlay on the EX-L, so that’s what I’d use instead of the crappy Honda navigation.
@@garrettw99 . I agree but what I have found from experience is the dealerships are adding more "add ons" to the EX-L trim which is making equal to the TS in price. I don't think that's very cool though I again agree with several of your points about pricing.
@@garrettw99 . Yes, AWD and one of the packages (e.g. black package) puts you at or above the price of the Trailsport. Some of the other accessories I saw earlier this year added to EX-L's were roof rails and crossbars which brought the price up to a TS with no fog lights or navigation (which no one uses)! Plus, NONE of the EX-L's are being delivered to dealers in 2wd. They all come with AWD which cost 41, 765. This is about 2500 fewer dollars than a TS. I bought a TS yesterday significantly below the MSRP, but I had to wait it out a couple of weeks. Initially, I was asked to pay above MSRP and that of course was a NO! Got a call a few days later for MSRP and that too was a NO. Finally, we were able to come to consensus with a ridiculous amount of money I got for my trade in. The TS PP was high on my list, but I also looked at the new G. Cherokee, 4Runner (my top choice), and subaru outback wilderness. I couldn't find a GC under 54,000 (Jeep lowest interest rates were at 6%), I was going to drive 400 miles to Cedar Rapids Iowa to buy a SR5 4Runner Premium but it sold before I could head out there (listed 46,500), and Subaru had a 3,000-5,000 market adjustment everywhere I looked. I'm happy with my purchase but again had to wait it out.
Hi Alex - I know this review is a year old, but I find myself circling back around from 3-row SUVs to 2-row SUVs with a lot of cargo space, which this one certainly has. You mentioned (9:59) this has auto brake hold. Are you sure? Or does that switch defeat the auto start-stop system? I ask because I have a disability and auto brake hold is a requirement for me.
I nearly bought a 2021 Passport Sport 4WD, but ultimately the push button shifter and 20" wheels deterred me. I got a 2012 Highlander Hybrid instead, and I don't regret it.
Why Honda still has not redone that dash and specifically the ugly gauge cluster remains a head scratcher. Also, what were they thinking with significantly higher pricing.
There's a lot to like but not enough to buy in my opinion. Solid engine and transmission with strong acceleration in its class. Excellent cargo space for a two row and plenty of passenger space given its Pilot platform. Reliability should be strong too. On the downside as Alex said there's nothing mechanically better about the Trailsport over the stock Passport. It got the more rugged Ridgeline facelift but that's about all it is, a cosmetic refresh for now. The instrument cluster looks ten years old and the nav screen is too small and outdated looking. It could do with lighter color options inside too for some contrast and for those who don't want a sea of black on black. The rear exterior lacks any design elements that would make it stand out and look a bit more exciting. The taillights in particular look like they're from an old ford. Kia/Hyundai are a least trying to make their vehicles look modern and cutting edge. The Sorento looks 10 years newer than this. You don't even see the passport when it drives by, at least I don't!
Nope, there were also other changes, but reviewers don't do adequate homework. There is a distinct difference between the three trim levels. The wheel packages believe it or not make a significant difference.
I have ever understood the Passport. If you want 2 rows and not 3, then why not buy the Pilot and fold down the third row and still have it if needed. I think the price is about the same. Also, does anyone actually use either off road. If so , I cannot imagine enough people do that to build a market around it. Seems like an Element would better fill the smaller Pilot market better. I genuinely would like some thoughtful comments on this because I do not understand but there must be a reason I am missing.
The price isn’t the same passport is about 3 to 4 k cheaper than Pilot, if you know for sure that you don’t need a 3rd row, then passport is the better one to buy, saves you a few thousand bucks.
YES, people take Passports off-road, more accurately overlanding. Have a look on YT, there is enough content out there to see the capability of the Passport.
Why hasn't Honda provided an All EV or at least, PHEV Model Passport yet ? Honda's really dissapointed me & surely many others in lagging behind to offer more economical drivetrain/engine/motor options.
Honda does not currently have an existing crossover BEV platform to build on. In fact, instead of developing their own platform, they opted to get GM to build their first BEV crossover: the Prologue, which is still three years out. And by GM building, I don't mean the platform - I mean building the actual vehicles. So I wouldn't get my hopes high for any BEV crossovers in Honda or Acura lineup any time soon.

Honda just feels a step behind with everything right now. Whether it’s having no EV, or even PHEV, available or even coming soon, their painfully outdated infotainment, an off-road trim that actually DOES anything (in the future it won’t be appearance-only). They’re a step behind the competition, and even a bit slower than they’d like to be.
Not sure how you mean "painfully outdated infotainment" I had a 2018 Accord Touring and it was easily the best infotainment of any of the sedans I shopped at that point. If you want outdated, look at infotainments from brands like VW, Volvo, Buick, Lincoln, etc. So many luxury brands too have the absolute worst infotainments. In my opinion though, Jeep/Dodge have one of the best ones right now.
Honda/Acura really has problems with their marketing. They launched the TLX Type-S on a track when that car has no business being anywhere near there. The same applies with this vehicle. Why they won't play to the strengths of their vehicles is beyond me.
Great review as always but I would take a lower trim Grand Cherokee any day over the Passport. Honda usually doesn’t do marketing gimmicks but this os certainly one of them. Just a appearance package and really nothing more.
@Jon Smith. The CX-50 is a nice vehicle but disappointedly small. I test drove one and wasn't in the least bit impressed. The interior, however, was amazing. If you're into turbo engines you might have a different opinion. Turbos aren't my thing.
Alex I think one Honda needs to do is make this car more ground clearance and make it a hybrid vehicle it's about time someone makes a hybrid vehicles that can actually go off-road and looks like this car has a good platform to begin that they just need to complete it .
The Passport has higher ground clearance and there is a MAJOR difference between how the two vehicles drive. People who say the Passport is just a two-row Pilot have never driven one. Watch reviews from people who actually own them. The Passport is nimbler and more engaging IMO.
in 2021, this thing is getting 19/24 fuel economy? I guess things haven't progressed all that much from a 2006 Pilot with 245 hp, a 5 speed automatic, getting 17/23...
@@justinfontaine5539 the timing belt is a maintenance item. It is supposed to be replaced every 90k miles usually. Timing chain is supposed to last the lifetime of the car. Maybe you meant you are having to replace it early?
@@garrettw99 Correct me if I'm wrong but, I remember a timing belt having the need to be replaced every 60,000 miles. On a side note, I can't believe Honda is still producing engines with timing belts. The Toyota 2GR-FE/FKS engine, for example, is smooth as silk, has a nice sound at WOT and has a timing chain. But, I'm sure Honda has their reasons to continue using a timing belt.
@@payrocoin I looked through the Passport Owners manual and it basically said “change the timing belt when maintenance minder code 4 appears in the instrument cluster”. They don’t have a maintenance chart with mileage, which is super dumb. It does say if you drive in extreme temperatures, change the belt every 60k miles. Two of our cars have timing belts and we change them every 80-90k miles. One is a 2002 J-series Honda Odyssey with 190k miles and the other is a 2004 Miata with 90k miles. The Honda is an interference engine and the Mazda is not. I’m fine with Honda continuing to use timing belts. The J series is one of my favorite engines put into a car.
@@garrettw99 Yeah, that Mazda is going to be with you for a while, especially if it's a manual. 😊👍🏼 My favorite engine is actually the VQ35DE/HR from Nissan. It just has the performance, and sound I love. However, it has an issue with the timing chain tensioner that can rattle a bit at cold starts. The 2GR-FE engine is just an engineering marvel. It is smooth, powerful, quiet, efficient, and durable. However, it uses 6.4 quarts of engine oil (as opposed to just 4.5 quarts for the Nissan engine), it tends to run hotter, and doesn't rev as quickly as the VQ. Then there is the Honda J35. My absolute favorite iteration of it was when it was in the gorgeous 2013 - 2017 Accord. However, it is still just SOHC, and uses a timing belt. There will always be pros and cons to all engines but, you just gotta enjoy them and take them for what they're worth. I would not mind having a vehicle with any one of those 3 incredible engines though. With the way I care for my cars, any of those engines would have a long service life with me. I usually maintain my cars at the severe level, even if they are not subjected to those conditions. I just like to do super preventative maintenance to whatever car I have because I rely on it heavily.

Agree that the “Trailsport” is just a nose job…..unfortunately. I have a 2021 Passport Touring and love it for the most part, but would have loved it more, if it kept the 6” it chopped off from the Pilot, and had a more squared off rear-end for added cargo practicality. I like the overall styling far more than the slightly effeministic Pilot.

The Passport is a decent vehicle, but I can't help but feel like it's such a lazy design by Honda. They literally just shortened the Pilot without making an effort to do something unique to the body or interior. I get most vehicles these days are closely related to their corporate siblings, but at least most manufacturers try to differentiate their vehicles to the point where most people couldn't tell at first glance. It's such a shame as this off-road-ish / go-anywhere SUV segment is as hot as ever, but Honda is barely making an effort.
'To much money only led low beam headlights not full led and it’s more expensive then most of the midsize trucks with proper off-road trims Honda went cheap here. With the pricing of a base passport it makes me think once again Honda doesn’t care and clearly wants to just get rid of this and discontinue the passport again. Whoever is running the SUV division at Honda clearly isn’t with the times and doesn’t look at what the competitions offers for way less money

I just lost some respect for Alex: "I never had a problem with the 9 speed" It was a train wreck in my former TLX and I do believe he's acknowledged that before.
1. Too expensive, for this Honda and its recalls. 2. Honda doesn’t make the 9 speed transmission. 3. Honda hasn’t figured out the infotainment issues and seems to be throwing random software updates at the many issues, without actually fixing the problems. Replacing it entirely doesn’t fix it either. 4. Spend your $40k elsewhere.
Who does this? I’d like to think I know a very diverse and eclectic large group of friends and associates and I don’t know anyone that takes their 40-80K SUV anywhere near where there are “trails” and “mountain passes” to get them filthy and more probably damaged. I would think someone doing stuff like this is loud, obnoxious, yells BRAH every other word and high fives for everything.
This thing just feels like a money grab. Beats you up offroad, costs more and it's just a silly appearance package. The Koreans do a much better on road version of the crossover, and Subaru does the offroad bits a lot better, why anyone would buy the Passport for 40k+ is beyond me.
This is why I cant stand Honda or Toyota anymore. Lets sell consumer F-Sport, TrailSport, etc, but don't give them anything under the hood, lets sell them exterior and interior changes only with fancy badging. It kills me inside because I would instantly buy a Honda Passport TrailSport if it actually had some off-road features...
Well, if you do like Honda, then you could just wait a few years, because Honda did say that in the future, trailsport will be more off-road capable, and will indeed add some off road features.

Are they beholden to make the biggest ugly grills, the most amount of fake vents? I just don't get the love for all this ridiculous use of black plastic on exterior designs.
My god Honda is so outdated with their boring vanilla basic interiors. Yikes! How are people okay with paying the same or more than the competitors who offer more features, tech, luxury, and value! Such as the absolutely stunning Hyundai Santa Fe, and Kia Sorento. (Even get a 10yr warranty with Kia and Hyundai) - small outdated screens , no fully digital gauges - crappy generic sound system - uninspired yawn inducing interior design - no pano roof - no 360 cam (literally a feature available in all other brands for nearly a decade now) I can go on and on. Honda is stagnant, stale, and are only getting away with their underwhelming overpriced products because ppl buy them out of blind customer loyalty. What a shame

@@eBikify I remember seeing a study few years ago and it’s true most people at max keep there car seven to ten years so many even trade in their cars before paying it off in less than 4 years my dad ask the same questions and I tell him your one of the less than 10 percent still rocking in old cars older than 10 years he still has his 2003 Mazda Tribute almost 300k miles taken driven all over the US. Hard to explain to people but because in ways cars have become more disposable people don’t care as much about reliability as much but it can be hard to explain it to people who don’t get it. Everyone’s different though some want reliability some want tech and performance I prefer a few more problems but a better driving experience and more performance and tech for the money some don’t and most Japanese brands know they can overcharge and give less value to people from what the competitors offered but people will pay the up charge for that reliability
Easy answer: Honda builds best engines and Toyota builds best cars. You really cannot go wrong with either. If durability does not matter, the other brands like Hyundai, Ford, Jeep, etc. will work for you. Depends on whether you like engineering for the long haul or bells and whistles that are not related to durable engineering. No right or wrong answer. Just depends on what is important to you in a car. Engineers own Honda’s and Toyota’s. I think that is an indisputable fact. Subaru is probably a distant third but in the same general category for engineers.

I would recommend the Outback but definitely get the XT. We love ours and it is smaller, cheaper, faster, better on and off road and better to drive over-all than the somewhat clumsy Passport. The Honda V6 is a great engine though!
If you enjoy driving, the CVT will be a disappointment to live with. Ask me how I know….get the Pilot.

This will be extremely successful. Nothing too offensive inside or out, if anything it’ll age well. A name badge might be all it takes nowadays for the lifestyle crowd.
Just got an Outback Wilderness after cross-shopping it with the Passport and 4Runner. Definitely happy with my decision as it's the ideal balance (for my purposes) of on-road and off-road handling.

I absolutely love it...!!! However, some changes are needed. I just HOPE that future iterations of this new model. Particularly the EX-L and up trims allow people to choose the grey leather option on the sonic grey pearl exterior color. For right now from what i've researched only being able to choose from 3 color options; dark blue, silver, and white to get the grey interior leather is VERY limiting. And i think the pairing of grey interior leather with the exterior sonic grey pearl color would be stunning. Having just black too choose from is VERY VERY drab for an interior color option. I also think the grey leather would look stunning on the Trailsport with the orange contrast stitching and badging. It's the main reason i would choose an EX-L over a Trailsport as i simply do not like an all-black interior. And also, Honda needs to offer better options on the EX-L & Elite trims for tire choices. Having just 20in tires with the SUPER awful Continentals is ridiculous. I've read over at the Honda forums that if you want you can go from the OEM 265/45/50 to a 275/45/50 and that will give you a bit more sidewall for blazing non paved trail fire roads etc...And you can still keep your stock OEM rims. But most of all that opens you up too better and more tire choices. Such as an A/T tire like the General Grabber AT3 or the Firestone Destination LE3's. However, hopefully Honda will make these changes themselves so consumers don't have too. It's rather ridiculous of Honda to have a model labeled "Trailsport" but only make it "cosmetically appealing". And really no different than an EX-L or Elite trim. Considering they ALL use the same I-VTM4 AWD system. You can't "off road" Honda on 20in tires that’s just a fact. So either use 18in tires for every model Passport. Or pick a different 20in tire size to broaden people’s choices. It's really not that difficult for them to do. And i'd bet A LOT of folks would agree with me on all of this. So for 2023 please make these changes Honda...!!! Thank you.

The pricing for the Passport doesn't make any sense to me. It's $1000 more expensive than the bigger, more comfortable and overall better Pilot. And for extra $2000 you can get an RDX!
Exactly. Honda sells so many vehicles so it doesn't really care anymore that's why I stopped buying Honda. I switched to Nissan and Toyota
I agree! They make it quite confusing for the consumer. Does it make much sense to buy the Passport? Just get a Pilot or an MDX and keep the rear seats folded down, or get a RDX which has ample storage space behind the second row.
I agree, considering they already offer a CR-V or an RDX (if you want luxury and a perhaps a little faster vehicle) the passport is sort in the middle of the nowhere. If you want some thing bigger the Pilot is there, and it is nicer. If you want something bigger that really looks nice and performa better then there is an MDX or an MDX type S.

It does make sense. Not everyone wants a 3 row SUV. I’d much rather have a Passport. And for the RDX, it’s smaller but nicer features.
Think its a misstep by Honda. They've already "diluted" this new badge before it gets started. If the first impression of buyers for this new badge is "appearance package only", they'll have a harder time changing people's mind vs just doing it properly the first time.

I think your last sentence says it right, obviously cashing in on the off-road craze. Let's face it, lots and lots of off-road oriented vehicles rarely, if ever, hit the dusty trail. But people want their vehicles to look the part no matter. Been that way for a long, long time. For me, there is little in any true rougher off-roading for hundreds of miles. I'm not really into off-roading anyway so it's moot.

Honda pretty much outright stated that it is an appearance package only for now, with plans to expand in the future.
@SmallLab129. The wheels on the PP TS are better for light off roading. Plus, it would be easy to add skid pads to this vehicle. However, I think ground clearance could have been a inch more.
I do not live in the country or mountains this is off road enough. spacious, comfort. The new face looks more aggressive. Worth the cost to me. If I have trouble finding a room at a hotel, the storage space is large enough for me.

The interior is a little too Plain Jane for a vehicle at that price-point. If you're a fan of Honda Corp's overall reliability, once you're into the mid $40's you might as well start looking at the RDX.
True. However, you're back to a (excellent) Turbo 4 with the RDX. The Passport still has the glorious 3.5L V6.
This is more for the person that wants function over form. The interior is definitely not that competitive in terms of luxury appointments.

Roof rails, navigation, fog lights, wheel and tire package. I test drove the EX-L and TS and there is a difference between the two as the smaller wheels on the TS are better. Reviewers never point out these differences. Inasmuch, no one pays sticker for these vehicles even with the chip shortage - reviewers don't talk about that either because they don't do their homework.
As much as I like what I see, I’ll wait for the 2023 and hope it has more off-road chops!

Disappointed in the pricing structure. It’s about $5k too high given the limitations vs how it’s marketed. AWD for $40k; at that price I’d buy a 4Runner or the new Grand Cherokee (without low range) instead due to better aftermarket support to customize it for my liking.
You will not be able to get a 4runner 4WD for 40k. A comparable 4runner (SR5 Premium) is $44-45k
I shopped the New Grand Cherokee and 4Runner against this vehicle. Couldn't find a GC under 54,000 and the SR5 premium on average was 46k. I paid 42k for my Trailsport and got a ton of money for my trade-in, so I am very happy with my decision.
Putting off road tires on the passport would lower its EPA fuel milage rating by increasing friction. I believe that is why you don't see rugged tires on the passport.

As Alex stated at least a dozen times, "TrailSport" is an APPEARANCE package/trim for the time being (with possible physical/mechanical upgrades to come in the future)...
Off market skid plates can be added and the price is nominal which no one talks about.

I thought it was the Ridgeline for a sec. I'm surprised that Honda thought the front-end of Ridgeline was so appealing that they could just use it for another vehicle without any tweak.
Not surprised at all since passport is based on Pilot, they share so much similarity that even front end look similar, interior is exactly the same, so they make passport using refreshed ridge line front end totally makes sense.
It's very much the new front end for Honda SUVs. New HRV has it to.
It's an OK look, better than many overstyled truck front ends.
I'm confused. I saw a reliable reviewer report that the TrailSport has an extra 1.5 inches of ground clearance and skidplates. Here it's different.

I wonder why the passport has the front end of the Ridgeline, but the pilot on which it's based doesn't. Weird.
From what I know, the Pilot is getting a redesign in 2023 and the Ridgeline and Passport are not. Could be wrong, but I think thats whats happening.
Because the current Pilot is still the third generation that started in 2016, just with some refreshes. The 2023 will likely be the next, where it will be updated.
People who buy the TrailSport are being duped. The squishy and thick tires are the only thing off-roady about this trim compared to an Elite. It’s a good, honest car, but this trim is not a good deal.
I disagree. I test drove the EX-L and TS - the smaller wheel on the TS makes a difference. Plus, it has navigation, roof rails, fog lights, and some other features the reviewers never talk about.
Only features the TS adds are the things you mentioned, orange stitching on the seats, heated wipers, illuminated beverage holders, amber ambient lighting, 2nd row sunshades, and a power outlet. It doesn’t seem worth $4700 over the EX-L. It might make a little sense if you need AWD since the TS automatically gives that to you over the EX-L. You get CarPlay on the EX-L, so that’s what I’d use instead of the crappy Honda navigation.
@@garrettw99 . I agree but what I have found from experience is the dealerships are adding more "add ons" to the EX-L trim which is making equal to the TS in price. I don't think that's very cool though I again agree with several of your points about pricing.

@@garrettw99 . Yes, AWD and one of the packages (e.g. black package) puts you at or above the price of the Trailsport. Some of the other accessories I saw earlier this year added to EX-L's were roof rails and crossbars which brought the price up to a TS with no fog lights or navigation (which no one uses)! Plus, NONE of the EX-L's are being delivered to dealers in 2wd. They all come with AWD which cost 41, 765. This is about 2500 fewer dollars than a TS. I bought a TS yesterday significantly below the MSRP, but I had to wait it out a couple of weeks. Initially, I was asked to pay above MSRP and that of course was a NO! Got a call a few days later for MSRP and that too was a NO. Finally, we were able to come to consensus with a ridiculous amount of money I got for my trade in. The TS PP was high on my list, but I also looked at the new G. Cherokee, 4Runner (my top choice), and subaru outback wilderness. I couldn't find a GC under 54,000 (Jeep lowest interest rates were at 6%), I was going to drive 400 miles to Cedar Rapids Iowa to buy a SR5 4Runner Premium but it sold before I could head out there (listed 46,500), and Subaru had a 3,000-5,000 market adjustment everywhere I looked. I'm happy with my purchase but again had to wait it out.
Hi Alex - I know this review is a year old, but I find myself circling back around from 3-row SUVs to 2-row SUVs with a lot of cargo space, which this one certainly has. You mentioned (9:59) this has auto brake hold. Are you sure? Or does that switch defeat the auto start-stop system? I ask because I have a disability and auto brake hold is a requirement for me.
Does it still have the glitchy infotainment system?
I think it's a great car and it's a shame Honda only offers it in North America. :(

I nearly bought a 2021 Passport Sport 4WD, but ultimately the push button shifter and 20" wheels deterred me. I got a 2012 Highlander Hybrid instead, and I don't regret it.

Why Honda still has not redone that dash and specifically the ugly gauge cluster remains a head scratcher. Also, what were they thinking with significantly higher pricing.
There's a lot to like but not enough to buy in my opinion. Solid engine and transmission with strong acceleration in its class. Excellent cargo space for a two row and plenty of passenger space given its Pilot platform. Reliability should be strong too. On the downside as Alex said there's nothing mechanically better about the Trailsport over the stock Passport. It got the more rugged Ridgeline facelift but that's about all it is, a cosmetic refresh for now. The instrument cluster looks ten years old and the nav screen is too small and outdated looking. It could do with lighter color options inside too for some contrast and for those who don't want a sea of black on black. The rear exterior lacks any design elements that would make it stand out and look a bit more exciting. The taillights in particular look like they're from an old ford. Kia/Hyundai are a least trying to make their vehicles look modern and cutting edge. The Sorento looks 10 years newer than this. You don't even see the passport when it drives by, at least I don't!
Nope, there were also other changes, but reviewers don't do adequate homework. There is a distinct difference between the three trim levels. The wheel packages believe it or not make a significant difference.
This a keeper, vs a lease machine. The Korean / Subaru's are for lease customers.

I have ever understood the Passport. If you want 2 rows and not 3, then why not buy the Pilot and fold down the third row and still have it if needed. I think the price is about the same. Also, does anyone actually use either off road. If so , I cannot imagine enough people do that to build a market around it. Seems like an Element would better fill the smaller Pilot market better. I genuinely would like some thoughtful comments on this because I do not understand but there must be a reason I am missing.
The price isn’t the same passport is about 3 to 4 k cheaper than Pilot, if you know for sure that you don’t need a 3rd row, then passport is the better one to buy, saves you a few thousand bucks.

I don't mind the exhaust tips. What I don't like are the rear suspension parts stick out so much in the back. Looks very crude.

Why hasn't Honda provided an All EV or at least, PHEV Model Passport yet ? Honda's really dissapointed me & surely many others in lagging behind to offer more economical drivetrain/engine/motor options.
Honda does not currently have an existing crossover BEV platform to build on. In fact, instead of developing their own platform, they opted to get GM to build their first BEV crossover: the Prologue, which is still three years out. And by GM building, I don't mean the platform - I mean building the actual vehicles. So I wouldn't get my hopes high for any BEV crossovers in Honda or Acura lineup any time soon.

Honda just feels a step behind with everything right now. Whether it’s having no EV, or even PHEV, available or even coming soon, their painfully outdated infotainment, an off-road trim that actually DOES anything (in the future it won’t be appearance-only). They’re a step behind the competition, and even a bit slower than they’d like to be.
Not sure how you mean "painfully outdated infotainment" I had a 2018 Accord Touring and it was easily the best infotainment of any of the sedans I shopped at that point. If you want outdated, look at infotainments from brands like VW, Volvo, Buick, Lincoln, etc. So many luxury brands too have the absolute worst infotainments. In my opinion though, Jeep/Dodge have one of the best ones right now.
Honda/Acura really has problems with their marketing. They launched the TLX Type-S on a track when that car has no business being anywhere near there. The same applies with this vehicle. Why they won't play to the strengths of their vehicles is beyond me.
Great review as always but I would take a lower trim Grand Cherokee any day over the Passport. Honda usually doesn’t do marketing gimmicks but this os certainly one of them. Just a appearance package and really nothing more.
A "lower trim" Grand Cherokee (new body style) will set you back nearly 50 grand with a high interest rate even with a credit score above 740.

@Jon Smith. The CX-50 is a nice vehicle but disappointedly small. I test drove one and wasn't in the least bit impressed. The interior, however, was amazing. If you're into turbo engines you might have a different opinion. Turbos aren't my thing.

Really just preference. Some people prefer a smaller, two-row model, and some don't.
The Passport has higher ground clearance and there is a MAJOR difference between how the two vehicles drive. People who say the Passport is just a two-row Pilot have never driven one. Watch reviews from people who actually own them. The Passport is nimbler and more engaging IMO.
in 2021, this thing is getting 19/24 fuel economy? I guess things haven't progressed all that much from a 2006 Pilot with 245 hp, a 5 speed automatic, getting 17/23...
Honda is trying to position this is as a 4Runner competitor but it doesn't really work.
As long as they're using that same engine the gas mileage is unlikely to improve much.

For some reason Passport(and Pilot too) doesn’t have auto hold function, unlike my 2019 Accord Hybrid, so that was a deal breaker for me
He meant auto start/stop, not auto hold. I'm pretty sure it still doesn't have it.

Yes. Same engine. I had it in my 2019 Ridgeline and its a great motor but the timing belt has had some issues and will have to be replaced eventually.
@@justinfontaine5539 the timing belt is a maintenance item. It is supposed to be replaced every 90k miles usually. Timing chain is supposed to last the lifetime of the car. Maybe you meant you are having to replace it early?

On a side note, I can't believe Honda is still producing engines with timing belts. The Toyota 2GR-FE/FKS engine, for example, is smooth as silk, has a nice sound at WOT and has a timing chain.
But, I'm sure Honda has their reasons to continue using a timing belt.
@@payrocoin I looked through the Passport Owners manual and it basically said “change the timing belt when maintenance minder code 4 appears in the instrument cluster”. They don’t have a maintenance chart with mileage, which is super dumb. It does say if you drive in extreme temperatures, change the belt every 60k miles. Two of our cars have timing belts and we change them every 80-90k miles. One is a 2002 J-series Honda Odyssey with 190k miles and the other is a 2004 Miata with 90k miles. The Honda is an interference engine and the Mazda is not.
I’m fine with Honda continuing to use timing belts. The J series is one of my favorite engines put into a car.

My favorite engine is actually the VQ35DE/HR from Nissan. It just has the performance, and sound I love. However, it has an issue with the timing chain tensioner that can rattle a bit at cold starts.
The 2GR-FE engine is just an engineering marvel. It is smooth, powerful, quiet, efficient, and durable. However, it uses 6.4 quarts of engine oil (as opposed to just 4.5 quarts for the Nissan engine), it tends to run hotter, and doesn't rev as quickly as the VQ.
Then there is the Honda J35. My absolute favorite iteration of it was when it was in the gorgeous 2013 - 2017 Accord. However, it is still just SOHC, and uses a timing belt.
There will always be pros and cons to all engines but, you just gotta enjoy them and take them for what they're worth. I would not mind having a vehicle with any one of those 3 incredible engines though. With the way I care for my cars, any of those engines would have a long service life with me.
I usually maintain my cars at the severe level, even if they are not subjected to those conditions. I just like to do super preventative maintenance to whatever car I have because I rely on it heavily.

Agree that the “Trailsport” is just a nose job…..unfortunately. I have a 2021 Passport Touring and love it for the most part, but would have loved it more, if it kept the 6” it chopped off from the Pilot, and had a more squared off rear-end for added cargo practicality. I like the overall styling far more than the slightly effeministic Pilot.

The Passport is a decent vehicle, but I can't help but feel like it's such a lazy design by Honda. They literally just shortened the Pilot without making an effort to do something unique to the body or interior. I get most vehicles these days are closely related to their corporate siblings, but at least most manufacturers try to differentiate their vehicles to the point where most people couldn't tell at first glance. It's such a shame as this off-road-ish / go-anywhere SUV segment is as hot as ever, but Honda is barely making an effort.
'To much money only led low beam headlights not full led and it’s more expensive then most of the midsize trucks with proper off-road trims Honda went cheap here. With the pricing of a base passport it makes me think once again Honda doesn’t care and clearly wants to just get rid of this and discontinue the passport again. Whoever is running the SUV division at Honda clearly isn’t with the times and doesn’t look at what the competitions offers for way less money

I’d like to think I know a very diverse and eclectic large group of friends and associates and I don’t know anyone that takes their 40-80K SUV anywhere near where there are “trails” and “mountain passes” to get them filthy and more probably damaged. I would think someone doing stuff like this is loud, obnoxious, yells BRAH every other word and high fives for everything.
This thing just feels like a money grab. Beats you up offroad, costs more and it's just a silly appearance package. The Koreans do a much better on road version of the crossover, and Subaru does the offroad bits a lot better, why anyone would buy the Passport for 40k+ is beyond me.
You actually get a lot for the money, but the reviewers don't focus on the differences between the trim levels.
Looks like a Ford Edge in the rear, looks out of place in that setting….
Think they should just stick with the pilot.
This is why I cant stand Honda or Toyota anymore. Lets sell consumer F-Sport, TrailSport, etc, but don't give them anything under the hood, lets sell them exterior and interior changes only with fancy badging. It kills me inside because I would instantly buy a Honda Passport TrailSport if it actually had some off-road features...
Well, if you do like Honda, then you could just wait a few years, because Honda did say that in the future, trailsport will be more off-road capable, and will indeed add some off road features.
Gimmicks and inevitable increase in price instead of manufacturing real cars. Honda and all the other manufacturers are now just playing a waiting game until the arrival of the plug ins

GIANT PLASTIC FOR NO REASON. What is up with modern car design? Do black plastic manufacturers have some sort of deal with car makers? Are they beholden to make the biggest ugly grills, the most amount of fake vents? I just don't get the love for all this ridiculous use of black plastic on exterior designs.
This is kind of like putting lipstick on a pig.
That front redesign is fugly.
My god Honda is so outdated with their boring vanilla basic interiors. Yikes! How are people okay with paying the same or more than the competitors who offer more features, tech, luxury, and value! Such as the absolutely stunning Hyundai Santa Fe, and Kia Sorento. (Even get a 10yr warranty with Kia and Hyundai)
- small outdated screens , no fully digital gauges
- crappy generic sound system
- uninspired yawn inducing interior design
- no pano roof
- no 360 cam (literally a feature available in all other brands for nearly a decade now)
I can go on and on. Honda is stagnant, stale, and are only getting away with their underwhelming overpriced products because ppl buy them out of blind customer loyalty. What a shame

@@FJBandFkMAGA Right. I don’t keep cars long enough to care about them lasting more than 10 years. I don’t keep a car longer than 5. So I’m going to stick with brands that offer the latest and greatest features and value for my money.
@@FJBandFkMAGA that’s true but many other brands have shown you can be in the modern world and still have reliability it’s more brand loyalty and tons of nostalgia and heritage imo people remembering Honda from back in the 80s and 90s
@@eBikify I remember seeing a study few years ago and it’s true most people at max keep there car seven to ten years so many even trade in their cars before paying it off in less than 4 years my dad ask the same questions and I tell him your one of the less than 10 percent still rocking in old cars older than 10 years he still has his 2003 Mazda Tribute almost 300k miles taken driven all over the US. Hard to explain to people but because in ways cars have become more disposable people don’t care as much about reliability as much but it can be hard to explain it to people who don’t get it. Everyone’s different though some want reliability some want tech and performance I prefer a few more problems but a better driving experience and more performance and tech for the money some don’t and most Japanese brands know they can overcharge and give less value to people from what the competitors offered but people will pay the up charge for that reliability
Easy answer: Honda builds best engines and Toyota builds best cars. You really cannot go wrong with either. If durability does not matter, the other brands like Hyundai, Ford, Jeep, etc. will work for you. Depends on whether you like engineering for the long haul or bells and whistles that are not related to durable engineering. No right or wrong answer. Just depends on what is important to you in a car. Engineers own Honda’s and Toyota’s. I think that is an indisputable fact. Subaru is probably a distant third but in the same general category for engineers.
But why? Why not release a proper off-roader with the juicy mechanicals…rather than just a pretentious pretender.. 🙁

But honestly if you want a proper off-roader, look at a Jeep Wrangler.
