Hello, great video! I have problem with my e71 X6 5.0i 2008 it shows the engine overheating yellow light then turns into red and I changed the antifreeze hoses because it was leaking and now it’s good from that point but the cooling fan wasn’t working too so I ordered new fan and replaced it and again the engine is reaching about 100 degrees and increasing up to 120 and overheating but the fan isn’t starting or when it starts it’s not working on high speed it’s not working properly, what can cause this problem? Sometimes it just starts and stops and repeats this action, what should I look for?
I could think about a couple of things. The first one is the temperature sensor, which seats on the oil filter housing, Second, it's the same location, which is the oil temperature seems. they are directly related to the fan speed. as for the coolant temp. it's normal for BMW to run hoot, as 100-110C, but the fan should be on at this temp. Good luck, and let me know if you resolve the issue.
So I have a quick question I have a 2016 BMW X6 50i. Is the relay in the same place as your BMW because my fan isn’t working either and we tried changing the fan and everything else and none of that worked.
Yes, you should have one. and it's easy to check. Also if you gonna be ordering one, make sure you have the right Amp count, as far as I know, their variation of 150 & 130Amp. and make sure to disconnect the battery if you gonna be replacing one since it has a positive cable going directly in. www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=KU63-USA-05-2016-F16-BMW-X6_50iX&diagId=61_3511
I have a 2009 E70 3.0. My fan runs on high when I start the car even when cold so I know it's not overheating. The fan runs for about 4 minutes while driving then shuts off. Then it comes on about 20 seconds later then runs for about 20 seconds and this cycle continues while I keep driving. Thoughts?
possible cause could be a failing water pump or thermostat, make sure to check the codes and see what you can find, the relay is just a pass trough, so it either work or not, temp. sensor could also be the case. good luck.
You can go on realoem.com If you type your vin there, it will show all the diagrams and parts specifically for your car. Also you be able to search for all the sensors and there location. Good luck!
Hi, Does the f02/2011 750li have a relay? If so, do you know the part # and location? I can’t seem to find the part on bmw dealers parts catalogue or any official documentation.
Hey. The realoem, com is the best place for diagrams and part number research. If you use your vin on the main page, it will show your build. But that’s what I found: www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=KB83-USA-06-2011-F02-BMW-750Li&diagId=61_3808 Good luck!
Does a 2011 528i hav the same fan relay/control module. Fan on my car doesn’t run at high speed. It constantly runs at low speed and just been having this issue for a few week. No codes or anything like that.
The simple answer is, you don't have one, the n54 have switch. you might have a relay in different location. you can check the "realoem . com", type your VIN and will give you all options and technicall spec of your car, then you can navigate to electronics and look for fan relay or cooling.
HiThere, i have an X1 N47/2,0 D, have the same problem, fan does not come on, it works when i put aircon on, and also comes on with Ista connected on both low and high speed, any idea where the relay might be? perhaps will try and replace and hope for the best.

The 3 Series usually don't have the Relay. If there one its gonna be behind the Battery, I wouldn't bother, the 3-series with n51 n52 n54 don't have one any way. Hi! First of all the only way to spin the fan without harming anything that true dealer obd tool, as inpa or any other that have ability to trigger the component. The second point is the relay, it's dirt cheap, 15x cheaper than fan, start from small and move toward big. Replace relay, than let me know what you got!

Trying to diagnose this issue on your own is alot of trial and error. Standard OBDII readers cant read the codes. I also used a SNAP-ON reader and all it said was “cooling issue”. Only the dealer can tell you the real problem. The diagnosis from the dealer cost more than the actual part…

2006 BMW X3 Engine Coolant Fan Temperature Switch. What y of manufacture is your car? Also, you can check realoem.com There you can find the parts by typing your VIN, and see diagram! Start from there. From now on That site will be your BMW Bible.
In theory, the relay has only one function, which is power passage. so if it's working-it's working. Make sure your AUC sensor has no messages, and also, the ambient temp sensor shows the right temperature. Do you have any messages on old? Just as context, my BMW X5 e70 was doing the same, because the AUC sensor was disconnected and wasn't working, try to clear the memory, make sure the AC is off when you start the car, and see if you have this problem, repeat with AC on. The fan speed is related to AC as well, that's why sometimes you got to make sure that you don't have a problem there. Good luck!

Could the relay be the issue and if so im not seeing anything on location ?
First, the e90's don't have relay, in rare occasions they do but that will apply only to european cars. the 2eff is thermostate, or one of two element's that is made of, so I would assume you need replace thermostate and water pump while you there. the 2f71 on x5 for example is the fan that directly cool ECU box: www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=FG41-EUR---E71-BMW-X6+35iX&diagId=12_1396

Upper radiator housing at the passenger side that's for 5series radiator switch, but it's more for 3.0 with no turbo, the 335 location might change. also you can search for radiator fan switch or so.
it could be the fan itself, the electric motor build from two stages, first for starting and second for running on speed, after starting the car try to spin the fan little bit, but be careful!!!! if it's still not starting it could be the relay, but most likely it's fan itself, any way it's cheaper to get a relay replaced first, then fan, like i said in previous comment, there nothing else in between the fan and DME except the relay. really small percentage can be the temperature sensor, but it's usually have problem with running on hi or low speed if it's sensor. good luck!

Test it with A/C off. Another point if the thermostat stuck open or water pump reduced the speed the fan will work in full. Make sure you check if temperature stay at 95c’. Check the obd for water pump speed, or make sure you don’t have the messages that water pump is missing or reduce power.
I think that you have radiator fan switch, which is seat on the passenger side radiator hose, at the top. I know that e60 have that type of setup! Good luck! Part number: 13 62 1 433 077 13627788077 1433077 13621433077

You have a switch. There tester for head gasket like this one, amzn.to/3Ee0J9y Get one it’s 99% accurate, in that case, you will know for sure. Before getting into any repair or replacement. N54 very rarely has head gasket problems. But the code is for a cooling fan, make sure the water pump and thermostat working correctly, the main symptom is the fan kicking on full speed, or it might was doing it before, in that case, you toast the fan. check the water pump speed, also try to actuate the cooling fan, there 4speeds for the fan, you can trigger it true INPA or OBD that supports the components trigger. See the readings off the temperature sensor and the consistency of the temperature rising. There are 3 things you need to check, cooling fan waterpump&thermostat and temperature sensor or switch. That could be long conversation, I’ll try to keep my thoughts short, what i want to say that the car is not overrated whatsoever, from my perspective it’s underrated, for the reason of maintaining, if you check the BMW maintenance shit, it’s say when and what you will need to replace at curtain mileage, and if you not ready to do that don’t buy the car on the first place, buy toyota which is cheap inside and outside, and doesn’t have advanced technologies inside, same as riding experience, quality of ride, and more, I know it’s not perfect, rither tessla or Ferrari, there also have they good and bad aspects. Non of the toyota will cach the eye same as BMW or Mercedese! The N52 and N54 engine’s are very reliable, in terms if you do proper maintenance!
Bro I fucking took my wheel off and the wheel liner and my shit was not there. This is not true for e60 I'm pissed I wasted my time and still can't find the damn location
Why would you just assume that an E60 would be the same as an X5? They're completely different models so the locations of things like relays could also be completely different.
The “realoem” have diagrams, in Electronics section you should be able to find what you need. E70 and E60 has completely different components structure plus the year is a big factor.
@jessepullen6109 I’ll double check with that, the chassis in X5 is very similar-same as 5series, but electrically would be different. My apologies if that was my mistake. Will make sure to update the information on that if so!
I don’t have any codes but the fan is stuck on high and overheating, do you think this part would do the trick? It used to get stuck on high for a few min then disappeared but this week it hasn’t gone away ever since.
The Temperature sensor and Relay, Replace both of them. I would say the temp sensor multi-functioning, the one that seats on the oil Filter housing, it's cheap and easy to replace, you only need a 22-mm or 24-mm socket(ua-cam.com/video/1ARsOcdPNGM/v-deo.html). The relay is cheap, so I would replace it as well.
you don't have the same location or the same relay, the one you looking for is in the passenger compartment fuse box, Number:45, 60A relay. Also check the luggage compartment Number: 127, 5A
Question: 2015 X1 xdrive28i has the same issue, no fan is working. The relay should be at same location? Do I need OBD memory save plug BEFORE I disconnect the battery? Any suggestion? Thank you!
The relay gonna be a little different, and it's in the DME box. see the pic. here www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=VL13-USA-02-2015-E84-BMW-X1_28iX&diagId=61_3822 It does not necessarily need to disconnect the battery to replace the Relay, but it's up to you. Thank you so much for your help and yes my car has that relay it’s cracked on the top will that be the issue, I also tested the fan fuse and it has voltage but when I tested the connecter I connect to the fan and there is no voltage.
Can you activate the fan from the software? Like obd scanner?
Unfortunately I do not have one

Thanks for the pointing on my mistakes! the car is 2007 BMW X5 E70 N52 3.0si, Yes the Multi Purpose Relay (150 Amp) (Black) Mfg Part # 61367661503, that the same relay was installed on my car, check the link in description for the part i used!

I have a 2004 645ci 4.4 v8. Is the relay the same? I replaced the fan and checked fuses.
Check the realoem website, you will find the diagram there for specific car.
Thoughts?
possible cause could be a failing water pump or thermostat, make sure to check the codes and see what you can find, the relay is just a pass trough, so it either work or not, temp. sensor could also be the case. good luck.
Hi! The fan runs went the car is cool?
Is there ac is on when is spinning? Try to turn off ac an see if it’s still working?

Check the recent comments, otherwise i will update in a day...
I cant find on my 2007 bmw 335i n54 e93. Is it in the same spot?
The simple answer is, you don't have one, the n54 have switch. you might have a relay in different location. you can check the "realoem . com", type your VIN and will give you all options and technicall spec of your car, then you can navigate to electronics and look for fan relay or cooling.
*my E46 coolant fan stays on doesn't turn off is this probably the solution?*
Have you found problem? Have you replaced pump/thermostat already? Are all your belts working?
Does this go for the x3 as well?
Not sure, newer owned a x3 you can check the realoem.com for the diagram.

Plz can u tell me where the relay for the 3 series N52 is located?
The 3 Series usually don't have the Relay. If there one its gonna be behind the Battery, I wouldn't bother, the 3-series with n51 n52 n54 don't have one any way.
You should have a switch on lower radiator housing, amzn.to/3M6XX8q. Make sure you have one first. www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=PH73-USA-06-2008-E90N-BMW-328i&diagId=17_0350 - it's number 10 on the picture. passenger side.
Do you know if the bmw 335d has the same relay?
Yes, there same principle, but could be different location for it!
Do you know where the relay is on a e85 z4
If I’m not mistaken, the e85 don’t have the fan relay, rather it had fan switch, it’s should be located on lower radiator hose, pass. Side. Check the realoem.com for the diagram. Also, you may have the fuse as well.
Good luck man!
My fan comes off & on continuously and eventually will show overheat around 200F and becomes limp mode. The car only has 33k original miles. Any ideas?
I would blame the temperature sensor, although you should have some codes?
@@Makhnovets This happened after cylinder #2 misfire due to a bad coil. Replaced all the coils + sparkplugs that's when I noticed the fan comes On & off while driving.
I have a 2009 328i x drive. My rad fan doesn't turn on when it needs to so I overheat. I'm getting power to the fan connector. I directly wired to 12v to see if it turns on and nothing. So I bought another rad fan from a wreckers and still won't turn on. I took 12v directly to the replacement fan and didn't turn on either.
Could it be just another dead fan? Do you think it would be this relay?
PS. I replaced the water pump and thermostat as well. Both rad hoses are hot.
Hi! First of all the only way to spin the fan without harming anything that true dealer obd tool, as inpa or any other that have ability to trigger the component. The second point is the relay, it's dirt cheap, 15x cheaper than fan, start from small and move toward big. Replace relay, than let me know what you got!
Cee Jay did you figure out how to get this rad fan to turn on? I am having the same problem, I checked the fuses, changed the rad fan, relay switch in the glove box. There is no fan switch on the rad hoses on this model 2009 bmw 328xi E90 like some others that do have a fan switch. The dealer showed me the schematics for my VIN and said there is no other related relay fan or switches. It is ECU controlled but I feel there is something I am missing. I am wondering if you can shed some light on this issue I have. Much appreciated if you have anything to suggest.

What y of manufacture is your car?
Also, you can check realoem.com
There you can find the parts by typing your VIN, and see diagram! Start from there. From now on That site will be your BMW Bible.
So I changed my cars coolant temp sensor but sometimes when I start the car the radiator fan goes full blast sometimes. Do you believe is the relay
Good luck!

Hey man Im getting the 2eff electric fan self diagnosis and 2f71 electronics box fan activation codes and my fan turns on full blast when its warming up and then sometimes its doesnt come and then csr starts overheating.
@@Makhnovets damnn man I just did my water pump and thermostat not too long ago , I cant imagine that it would go bad already. Maybe its a coolant temp sensor or fuse
Do you know the location of that on a 2009 bmw 128i?

Does it work on a 2007 x3
Not sure, but you can check realoem for diagram, it should be under electronic/Relay.
So my fan twitches but doesn’t fully turn on, Would this be my best bet if my fan wants to turn on but doesn’t fully turn on ?
it could be the fan itself, the electric motor build from two stages, first for starting and second for running on speed, after starting the car try to spin the fan little bit, but be careful!!!! if it's still not starting it could be the relay, but most likely it's fan itself, any way it's cheaper to get a relay replaced first, then fan, like i said in previous comment, there nothing else in between the fan and DME except the relay. really small percentage can be the temperature sensor, but it's usually have problem with running on hi or low speed if it's sensor. good luck!
OP, did you ever fix the twitching fan issue? Was it the fan or the relay?
I’m having the same issue is fan or relay bcz my fan works on a/c and twitches when idling also just changed thermostat

Hey did you find the a solution to your fan ??
Test it with A/C off. Another point if the thermostat stuck open or water pump reduced the speed the fan will work in full. Make sure you check if temperature stay at 95c’. Check the obd for water pump speed, or make sure you don’t have the messages that water pump is missing or reduce power.

I think that you have radiator fan switch, which is seat on the passenger side radiator hose, at the top. I know that e60 have that type of setup! Good luck!

If your fan is alway on, that means the coolant temperature sensor isn't working. The Relay is sort of switch, so if the fan is spinning that means relay working.

You have a switch. There tester for head gasket like this one, amzn.to/3Ee0J9y
Get one it’s 99% accurate, in that case, you will know for sure.
Good luck!
What exactly was your code? Auxiliary fan activation: line disconnected?
The code is "2efe electric fan, activation"

It’s not the worst engineering decision, but it’s not the best either 🤣
German engineering lol😂
Expensive car but parts break premature. Over rated car.
I own bmw, Mercedes, Toyota and Tesla. Bmw break down prematurely. That’s all I’m saying, breaking down before recommending to change parts.
@@Makhnovets no doubt they are different. But in the video he says e60 is in the same spot ...
