and for what it's worth I was this close to putting in a bunch of flamenco tracks that actually turn out to be part of a metal song but I realized I would get in trouble with Paradox if this video got taken down for copyright issues
Want to see a magic trick? Open up CK3, start scheming against your steward and watch as it suddenly becomes 5am

Let's go I'm so proud of my boy for getting the crusader Kings plug great game great channel ❤️❤️❤️
"and watch as it suddenly becomes 5am"
oh no thats too real ._.
Still like ck2 though, I waiting till all DLC comes out before getting ck3
Waaayy too real!
Can you do harald hardrada next? The Prince who fought his way from iraq to england for Gold Glory and For others to remember his name.
Ah yes. Not just Cid, but *the* Cid. The only Cid worthy of a definite article!
Everyone is worthy in Spanish
He's called The Lord for a reason.
@@carltonleboss yep , that is why he is a recurring character in Final Fantasy
The stig
not THE LORD it means The Sir!
Noooo, you can’t just abruptly end the video with it’s death, when one of the greatest legends about him takes place with his corpse. Supposedly the Almoravids were confident about victory after hearing of his death, but the Valencians put El Cid’s dead body on top of his horse, stiffen by some woods. Seeing the Knight and the Valencians charging towards their armies made the Almoravids loose moral and retreat. Legend, but classic one.
Also, Afonso VI, who declared himself Emperor, also deserves an episode of his own.
And then he caught a fever and D I E D the end!
@Uncumbersome You sure? Hit us with some highlights? Or are you about to get famous.
@Dani Al You cant prove that
@Dani Al It happened in AoE2, it must be true.
@Uncumbersome really cool, manly, and totally not 12.
Jack - "The soldier with dreams of glory had finally gotten his kingdom, he didn't even have to sacrifice all his friends to a bunch of demons to get it"
Griffith - Pttttf!
Love that Jack is partnering with CK3, Always fun to start playing and realize its now 2 days later.
If anyone if interested, apart from the "Cantar del mio Cid" there is a historic-fiction book by Perez Reverte called Sidi, is a really good book with Cid as the protagonist
ua-cam.com/video/QhGEcFL3d4I/v-deo.html
Finally it's here.
Fun fact: El Cid's grandson eventually became king of Navarre, which means every monarch from the house of Bourbon in both France and Spain is a direct descendant of him.
El cid is not a real guy, just like arthur, im spanish btw.
@@ThisGuy.... El Cid is a recorded historical figure, he’s just heavily exaggerated
Edward III is his descendant
@@ThisGuy.... Arthur is historical. It's just later stories embellished a lot and added in mystical elements. There's a few good videos on youtube about the real Arthur.
@@rishisaaptacha He was likely a combination of a Welsh King and a Roman General further embellished over the years
My favorite Age of Empires 2 campaign hands down. This is going to be a banger
Capture Alfonso and bring him to me so that I may... persuade him that ruling Leon is enough.
Oh yes! It was how I first learned about El Cid. I was able to use what I learned in the campaign to help during my High School Quiz bowl team
@@RainintheBrain Nice lol. I brought it up in Chaucer as an example of how Christian knights really would work for anyone with cash. El Cid played the game of thrones to win
Rodrego diaz de vivar 😍
@@mortache El Cid Champion El Cid
Missing the most famous legend about him: his dead body placed on the battlements to fool the enemy into retreating. Likely never happened, but still.
Oh, and his story is one of the first poems in Spanish we have in full. Quite the long thing.
Actually, it's not in full, a few verses at the beginning are missing. But it's the first Spanish epic poem.
It's the Wuzhang Plains all over again
A dead commander fools a living opponent
"Curse you historical nuance!"
And that's why all these historical tales don't end how you expect from general fictional narratives.
I love how El Cid is ALWAYS smirking.
“He wandered as a knight without a master…”
As if the guy’s story wasn’t cool enough he became a gods damned ronin. You know for maximum cinematic appeal.
I think the English term for it is Hedge Knight but same thing basically.
Knight-errant would be the knightly equivalent
@@mrflyingcow5423
Neat thing: "Hedge Knight" is a deragatory term, as in a knight who stalks the Hedges to rob people. Rather, "Knight Errant" is the proper term for a non-bound knight.
@@The-Plaguefellow Fair enough to be honest I forgot knight Errant
Want another bit of just pure cinematic marvel? He skipped the most well known legend about him. Namely, as many put it "the dead man rides through the streets of valencia". Supposedly after his death his men propped his corpse onto his horse and drove him to the front one last time to beak the almoravid's morale.
Seriously, this guy was born to be a frigging icon. He has all the hallmarks.
In high school, I had to do a project and, having played Age of Empires 2 a LOT (including and especially El Cid's campaign), I chose El Cid. Loved it.
I can confirm that this is exactly what it's like playing a paradox game. Start the game at 7pm and next thing you know the sun is rising
"I am just going to play for maybe half an hour before bed...Why do I hear birds? OH NO I DID IT AGAIN!"
I mostly know this guy from Civilization VI, where he is one of the best great generals in the game
age of empire 2: the conquerors expansion pack
El Cid! as someone from Valencia this guy is a big deal, with statues and all that jazz
The funny think about El Cid even though the Spanish call him a national hero he fought Christian as much as muslims.
That's the case with a lot of European national heroes. Richard the Lionheart liked France more than England.
That is very standard for Spaniards.
I'm a Spaniard and I'm proud of our Christian and Muslim pasts. There's so much myth about the Reconquista. It wasn't Christians VS Muslims, it was Christian VS Christian, Christian + Muslim VS Christian, Muslim VS Muslim and obviously Christian VS Muslim. It wasn't a "crusade".
And our Muslim past has left us some of the most amazing pieces of art Spain has like the Alhambra, the city of Córdoba (which is the city with the most UNESCO World Heritage sites inthe whole world) or the Giralda de Sevilla. The Christians have left us the amazing cathedrals of León, Santiago and Burgos, the thousands of incredible castles throughout Spain or the Camino de Santiago.
@@ikad5229 It was definitely a crusade.
@@kavky It really wasn't, it was full of infighting and also saw Muslims and Christians join forces to kill other Muslims and Christians. The religious orders were pretty much the only ones that actually treated it like a crusade and that still involved them fighting other Christians.
Actually the most accurate depiction of ck3, so many days lost
A Jack Rackam video? About one of my home country's idolized historical figures? Let's goooo
El Cid was like a Mount and Blade player character stuck in real life.
I think this is the third video today about Al-Andolus with an ad about this game in it.
All according to plan 🧐
This man's entire life sounds like a mount and blade playthrough
El Cid Campeador, The Lord Champion, Prince of Valencia, and a mercenary with extra steps.
6:43 Aah yes, Count Jaher ta'Diranhriá of Barcelona, known for his pointy ears and bloody conquest of Bulwar, Rahen, Dameria and Haless
Someone's a fan of Anbennar I see
Man 1066 was an eventful year for the Medieval world.
2:38 that's actually Abd al-Rahman III, who, fun fact, was naturally blond and dyed his hair black, a la Giants relief pitcher Brian Wilson.
"I wanted to make this whole episode into a Berserk parallel"
Oh God-Hand, this is going to end very, very badly.
Edit: So that was a lie.
In a DnD campaigne when managed to befriend a villain named Cyanwrath. He eventually became a trusted frontline fighter who was instrumental in the final battle. He nickname was "Cid" and our running joke was that he would enter a room and say "I am... CID!".
I loved the El Cid missions in Age of Empires II!
I just love it whenever you use CK3 characters
Another great/prominent figure a bit before El Cid was Almanzor he was a genius military strategist and was extremely influential within the peninsula and when the Caliph died he took over and instated a type of dictatorship that lasted 30ish years and a few after his death then the caliphate turned into the taifas(that are in this video)
4:47 There is actually a quite new series in Amazon of the Cid adventures "El Cid" with the actor of Denver as the protagonist
The Master ref from Dr Who further proves why this channel is amazing and criminally underrated
The Cid my favorite age of empires campaign I remember playing that on the age of conquerors disc haha man what a cool guy
Love the Vlog Brothers reference to the doobly-doo (on top of your channel and all your videos)!
Ah yes, the lord of the rebel settlement in Iberia, in Medieval 2.
The crusader kings add opened while I was right about to open the game. Jack, sir, you got me addicted to crack.
Great video, awesome topic!
But I'm stil slightly disappointed by the lack of mention to "Urraca, 'the Spider '", sister of both Alfonso and Sancho (and said to have been her own brother's lover), supposedly frenemy of El Cid and ultimately the protector of his widow.
Also the one kind of pulling the strings between Alfonso's daughters just for s**** and giggles, which led to the creation of Portugal.
Alas, leave it to Portuguese hiatorians to have a nation that starts with decades of intrigue involving three princesses vying for power and yet treat it as a preamble and put them all on the footnotes while talking in exhaustive details about their run-of-the-mill kingly sons who, yes, won, but were like hundreds of other kings in Europe...
Oh, Portugal, why do you have to be so... Portuguese?
Another spanish hero waiting for a video is Admiral Blas de Lezo, aka El Medio Hombre (the half man, because he was missing an eye, and arm and a leg), quite famous for his based af comments (when questioned on how he kept getting wounded every battle (due to his sheer apparent lack of self preservation) he answered he took pride in knowing he left a part of himself on every battle. And when he learned of muslims praying to mecca he retorted that all spaniards should piss staring at london), also fought against pirates actually so it might be right up your alley, tho what he's most famous for is just how thoroughly he humiliated the British Grenadeers.
I mean his name's still literally banned from official UK documents. We're talking THAT level of humiliation.
Kind of sad you didn’t mention the legend that during the siege he died in his wife dressed his body up and propped up body on his horse to keep the defenders moral up. True its in likelihood a total fabrication to make him sounds more badass for his fans but the fact the story exists sounds cool.
Glory for Berserk!!!!!!
Maybe do a story about michiel de Ruyter. He was a dutch admiral who did some wacky stuff you could find in a Disney movie.
the ck3 ad was too relatable, sometimes I play till I hear the birds chirping.
A CK3 ad done gloriously. I want to see you get sponsored by Life itself lol
He literally was just playing Mount and Blade in real life.
I'm sorry that image your using for El Cid is amazing!
That ad was a very accurate portrayal of what playing CK3 is like
That's honestly the best sum up of El Cid's life I've ever seen
And I'm Spanish
I wish you'd do a video on the Umayyad Caliphate. They had DRAMA.
You have some of the best ads in town, love how you tie em into the vid
The fact that you were so freakin accurate with crusader kings made me almost crash the like button ;D
Happy 250k!!!
chaos is a ladder - El Cid
I would’ve thought that the sponsorship was incredibly cringey if I hadn’t been in that same exact situation. For those of you who haven’t bought Crusader Kings, you owe it to yourselves to get it. It is sincerely one of the best and most addicting games I’ve ever played.
pirate it instead.
@@redcrown5154 I would at the very least purchase the base game and then later pirate the subsequent DLC's
@@a-drewg1716 why?
@@redcrown5154 do you know where I can get them, ck2's dlcs I mean?

Tip for playing CK3 since the max amount of land you can have is 2 duchies change their succession to be feudal elective and you basically have secured the rest of the game. And land outside of them will be subject to partition however
I really loooove these videos...no body does history like Jack!
Thanks for telling me to play responsibly after I have already played ck3 for over 1500 hours
Thank you UA-cam for not notifying me at all about an upload from a channel I explicitly clicked that dumb bell for...
that ck3 music gets me in the mood
To be fair, El Cid probably saw all the backstabbing and thought, “Well, if you can’t beat them, join them.”
You captured the essence of CK
😣
Could you do a video at some point about the knight William Marshall? I'd be curious to see your take on him. Thanks! BTW, you're totally one of my favorite history channels!
Love your content
Nice, thanks Jack!
Wasup homies!! -El Cid probably
This channel is just pure gold!
Best. Sponsor ad. Ever.
The last time I was this early, Pompey was busy being an overachiever extraordinaire.
Alfonso inexplicably starts speaking Italian over the phone.
Lmfaooo “CK3 please play safe, the sun is coming up and your family misses you” 😂😂 that’s too on point!!
You did him good, Rackam!
You did him good!
Ah El Cid, takes me back to learning about him from Age of Empires 2
Everyone loves El Cid
I've heard the name but never knew the man behind it! Thanks 👍
You should make a video of William Marshal some day if you want to make more videos about Historical Knights. His life was pretty wild I should say.
I felt everything in this video because of how much ck3 I've played.
Same brother, I wonder if he’s in the game tho 🤔
@@benjamin5370 He's in Sancho's court. Listed as Rodrigo 'the Campeador' de Vivar.

oh lordy that ad was a bit too on point. The teeth certainly haven't let go
Excellent video, just one small mistake. "Campeador" comes from Campo, field. He was called that because he often fought in open fields with little cover. Champion would be "Campeón".
Just fell into a wikipedia hole and dug up Mujāhid al-ʿĀmirī. He was an Eastern European slave who was bought by Al-Mansoor, and ended up leading Muslim armies from the shores of his Mediterranean island home.
This has to be one of the best made sponsor introduction ever
The moment i saw the video title i was like:El Cid?I have definitely heard of him before,oh it's that guy that joined my court
"Sun is beginning to rise."
Haha. I live so far to the North that the sun doesn't even really go away during the night! So technically I'm NOT playing till the sun comes up....
Touché, touché
Most accurate sponsorship but I’ve ever seen in a yt vid lmao
I'm watching this so I could steal a kingdom someday
I appreciate the Berserk reference.
I never knew that it was actually El Cid, who discovered the Canary Islands for Castille.
I used to have a dwarf named after El Cid in my D&D days in the 90's.
Ackuhally, plate armor was not invented yet, during the time of El CID .
I share your pain “aboot” gavelkind, guy.
By the way, there is a movie about El Cid and it stars Charlton Heston. I haven’t seen it because it’s not on any streaming service I know of and it’s not on UA-cam, but it’s definitely on DVD.
PS - it’s “Tharagotha” (interesting that the Old World Spanish pronunciation makes a reference to the Visigoths. Learn something new every day).
Best pronunciation of "Barcelona". 10/10 no notes.
And not a single Cid Vicious joke.
Forget ck2, this reminds me of Age of Empipes 2! enjoyed those campaigns as a kid
The last bit absolutely got me. My brain just clicked and said Griffffffithhhhhh
FOOLISH summer child!
Finally Charlton Heston
