Later on we hear Phil ask Ben for a bottle of scotch which implies that Gavin and his henchmen gave him alcohol.
well it does not sound Jolly what he went through Gavin's men cracked his leg his wrist his ribs and likely left him in a state of constant pain on purpose in order to force him to drink alcohol again to numb the pain in order to break him mentally.
