I take an English class once a week at a cultural center. The class is middle level and the students there are not young. The regular teacher is an English woman, but when she is absent due to illness, her husband, an elderly Japanese man, teaches in her place. He says he used to live in England.
In the last lesson, the following sentence was found in the list of example sentences he made.

There are 3 thousand island in Indonesia.
When I pointed out that a plural s for the word ‘island’ was missing, he replied, “A plural s is not needed for ‘island’ in the case the sentence is about Indonesia. The country name ‘Indonesia’ is special and exceptional.”
When I expressed doubts about that, he told me, “Native speakers such as the British and Americans say so.” Then I asked the rationale behind this grammatical exception specifically for ‘Indonesia’, and he only answered “I don’t know. Native speakers told me that.”
I told him that I had never heard such an exception before, and then he said "Why don't you ask someone else who knows English well."
    QUESTIONS
Q1 Do native English speakers make the sentence without a plural s for the subject words ‘3 thousand island’ because of the grammatical exception for 'Indonesia'?
Q2 Do you know anything about the grammatical exception for 'Indonesia'?
Q3 I also found the sentence "I was hopping to have another cup of coffee" in the list of examples. When I said that might be "hoping to", the teacher replied that the sentence is correct because the British have the idiomatic expression ‘hopping to’. The students have completely believed what he said. Do native speakers have that expression?
Any comments on this matter would be welcomed.

Thank you for sharing. I’ve learned a lot. But why do the British invent these complicated expressions instead of speaking directly?😭😭😭😭😭😭
