Historical factoid. Now where some new housing tract built after 1980 sits less than a mile from the damn there used to be a brick factory dumping ground. You go down a paved road and then a few hundred feet on a dirt road and then there were 5-10 piles of bricks maybe 5 feet high by 20 feet around. Many/most if the bricks were cracked or broken but if you looked hard enough you could find full unbroken red bricks. Maybe they were factory seconds or overstock? Many of the broken bricks were pristine other than one corner. A couple pick up trucks loads would get you enough useable bricks for a typical landscape or wall project. My guess is hundreds of local tract houses still have these free bricks in walls and gardens. There was never any security if any kind -- no one cared if you loaded up and took all you could haul away.
They recently raised the height of thy dam 40’. At least in the last 30 years. The reason? Because the hundred year flood never happened so they we’re getting ready for the 500 year flood. Long before 2005 there was a flood there that took out the golf course and mobile home park there. Back when California was nice and free. Use to fish the outlet for catfish.
Yea why is it leaking so much at the base next to the gate when barely filled? When I asked to be a dam engineer at University of Minnesota the professor said don't. I know now why.
That was cool. However I wish they wouldn't under state how dangerous these aging dams are. Most weren't designed to last more than about 75 to 100 years.
The US Army Corps of Engineers usually name all of the dams they construct after the closest town to the site of the edifice. In this case: The Prado Dam.... But there's a curious exception to this naming rule: There is a dam in West Virginia that sequesters water from the Gaulie River. It flows past the incorporated city of Summersville, and is named the Summersville Dam. But Summersville isn't the closest town to the edifice..... That jurisdiction is the town of Gad............................
I just camped at Prado Dam campground. To make a reservation, one must use San Bernardino County system-NOT Orange County, not Riverside County either. Oops, some news people should make a correction. ALL 3 counties converge there, of course, have definite boundarylines.
@@dannydevito5729 No where near the spillway, that's wide concrete Right side which as always is near top of dam. They're just keeping river flowing, feeding from *bottom* of dam. Look at the reservoir area above dam, just a little swamp. (but clearly it rarely at best ever fills based on trees)

All that water and you Californian’s will still waste it all and end up with fires again. Learn from your neighbors and build more reservoirs instead of houses.
A co-worker lives near the Prado dam but I haven't been up there for years. I was sure based on the anti-American sentiment of the state of California that the mural on the dam would be painted over. Thanks for confirming my suspicion.
All of the supposed work done to this dam has been a huge scam, like most public works programs are. It just does not cost hundreds of millions of dollars to move dirt and rock around slowly over many years, of which during a lot of those years, nothing was actually done. Most of the work was directed at the height of the actual dam itself, the part you see when you drive past the area of the 91 and 71 freeways. And check out the spillway, which is so incredibly small compared to how much water the area is supposed to hold back.
But the emergency spillway (on the right) is very generous and paved a long distance. The Oroville Dam emergency spillway looks like this after the 2017 repair.
@@theshyguitarist I was referring to the emergency spillway, not the gated spillway. The Oroville reservoir is 10 times the size of little Prado. It's original emergency spillway nearly failed prompting a mass evacuation.

So cool to see the extent of the dam and basin from the air.
What happened to the beautiful 1776-1976 mural? Too American?
Is that a chip of maga on your shoulder? Ffs that mural was painted almost 50 years ago for the bicentennial! Paint gets old.

For a year like this, that dam is worth every penny!
Just flew over it yesterday with my student, it’s amazing the difference!
The spillway to the right used to have a huge US flag painted on it.
That was done by the Corona Hight School class of 1971 or 1972 I believe, and If I'm not mistaken it was a red, white and blue liberty bell.
That’s right-I remember that mural. I think it was to celebrate the bicentennial of 1776 💪🏽.
You can still kind of see it. I think they used lead based paint to do it.
@@samg8222 I grew up in OC, no wonder Im kinda slow.

The spill way on the right had lots of graffiti but in 1976 a 1776 1976 and liberty bell was painted there.

I remember back in the late 1960's after the Nohl Ranch fire when the water behind the dam was up onto the 71.
I remember this as a little kid, on the 71 going to corona, i remember being scared because the water was so close to the highway.

@@bootstrappedfriend1752 ha ha, looks like you don't know how the English language works. Were you trying to say something?
This a flood control structure, and that's what they are using it for. In the meantime, they are leaving plenty of water behind to recharge aquifers.
Much of this water is captured downstream in recharge ponds that then help maintain the underground water table.
Remember back in 1975 when they painted it for the 1976 Bicentennial ?
