BMAC to the rescue yet again... You can tell he is a VW guy because he has made a video about how to sort out all the issues that have cropped up in my MK4 Gti ....
This was really helpful! Thanks! Some advice to other (less experienced) viewers like myself: learn from others mistakes! After removing the window motor, I pushed in the back side of the motor holder and it fell apart, unwinding all the wires from the window lift... I was pissing blood until I finally managed to put it back together... So, do not take the window motor apart unless it is completely necessary! As mentioned in the video, it is not necessary to remove it to get to the locking mechanism! If I'm a dumbass that does not mean you have to be one too ;)
Ok, quite alot of information there. First make sure the door is fully functioning with out the door panel. Make sure everything moves as it should and there are no restrictions, check the metal rod moves up and down freely. Then put it back together with making sure you are not bending or stressing any part of the moving mechanism.
I got the bolts out, couldn't for the life of me figure out why the thing was still stuck on after watching like 5 other youtube videos that glazed over the whole "pry it off with a lever" bit. Your video saved me. Thanks a lot!
First point of reference is the key lock, I would suggest remove the key lock and inspect it. Put the key in and make sure it is working as it should. Next get a flat screwdriver and put it in the slot of the module. Twist it both ways clockwise and anti-clockwise, it is possible you could have inserted the key lock in while the module is already in the lock position. I hope this message makes sense, let me know how you get on.
Hi!! Great tutorial, but there are two points that can make easier the disassembly if you only have to repair door lock or lifter parts. Just move down glass matching the screws with panel holes, unscrew it, and manually move the glass to the top of the window. Now you can hold the glass on top side with a few tape stripes. Ther'es no need to separate interior panel from door lock. I think it's better to remove the 2 parts togheter, without holing the plastic tips. Frist unscrew all parts, unplug all electric and mechanic wires, and let it out. You'll find more easy to put back on all togheter (specially to center the side lock bolts) Greets from Spain and sorry for my english!!
great demo, just replaced my lock unit, should of tried the repair first, got the lock unit out with out taking the key barrel out, just realest the cable from the back from the pull handle , really helpful thanks
Thanks for sharing this video its folks like you that help loads of folks and save them money.I f you just need to replace the cable just remove the 2 main door lock ones , i did also loosen the door barrel one slightly .Also no need to remove the glass just tape it up . Once the cable has been fitted to the lock and you are just about to fit the outer door panel the cable is a bit of a nightmare to fit its easier if you put the window down and do it from the outside with a helper holding the door panel .
Must say very nice demonstration... Thanks... U may know and help me for this ? I have passat caravan year 2000 my problem is when i try to open the door just with key (without remote) everything is fine all doors unlock, but when I try to lock only one door are lock just driver door are lock ? With the same door have another problem when i open inside light does not turn on what can be the problem please tell me if u know ??? All works fine before start to rain about 3-5 days continuous... Please help...
Thanks for this. My front driver side door is giving a false door open signal. I was thinking of replacing it myself but had no idea you had to remove practically everything on the door in order to get to the door module itself. Not gonna happen in this summer heat. Mind posting how long the whole job took you, as well as putting it back together, in order to estimate shop charges?
My son and I worked on this most of the day. Followed the steps given here that were helpful, but left gaps when you run into trouble. Like the arm that pops into the inner support was cracked. We just left it off. No pop rivet needed. Then the unit would not seat properly with the outside lock cylinder. We removed the lock cylinder and mounted the new latch. When putting the cylinder back in, the stupid Ring that locks the cylinder back down decided to come off and fall to the bottom of the door. Now the bottom of the door is like something designed from hell. It took me with a tripod with a led light taped to it's camera mount and a hand held mirror and a coat hanger to fish this ring out!! You have to position the light just right reflecting off the mirror to reflect the light down the door to the bottom. Just using a flashlight by itself will never work!! It took over one hour to accomplish this one task!! This door is the most over-engineered piece of work I have ever worked on!! My old 1971 Type three is much easier to work on and replace parts off of!!
Hello, It's really great videos, very heplfull. Thanks! I have a question.. today we were fixing my VW polo 2003 door power window regulator, motor was ok, just this plastic parts broke. We were removing the whole window mechanism. It all went ok, window is fixed and nicely working, but there is one small detail. Once we closed the door, I can't open them again. Can you help? We probably missed something, but apart of that, is there a way how to open it? Thanks..
Great video. Easy to follow. I need to replace the door lock cable that I've bought as the little hook that connects to the internal door handle as snapped off. Would you suggest doing all this?
Thanks...!! I really appreciate your videos....!! They ´re very useful!! Now I can fix my door sensor!! Once again... thanks!! Greetings fron Costa Rica!!!
thanks for the reply, the door handle just seems loose and will swing out all the way but have no affect on the mechanism, its as if it is loose, how can I tighten/slacken the pulley cable if it is this?
Hi great tutorial, however how do you release the 2 lock module pins from panel - do they just push out or do you have to drill them out - whichever and then how do you secure them once door panel is replaced
what are those rubber things for ? the one at the lever that goes up and down when opening closing and the one at the lever that you pull to open the door. My vw has both of them small size like the one you have at the opening lever. The rubber from my car is damaged at the up/down lever. Should i cange it? From what i saw the door lock module is water proof and the only purpose that i see of this rubbers is to protect the levers from touching the metal parts. What do you think?
I believe my rear passenger door lock module has broken after the child lock was engaged. This means none of the usual tricks for getting the door open have worked. A mechanic suggest that the only way is to break the window regulator. Do you have any tips in this case? Many thanks. I've learnt a lot from your videos.
Just wanted to check is this the same for the polo 9n 2002 at all ? I need to get the door lock module out tried today and found that I couldn't remove it due to the glass . Is this the same steps I would need to take on that too ?
Hi there, thanks so much for making these very helpful videos! I have a question - is it necessary to remove the glass to remove the door latch? Mine has died and I'd rather not have to take the glass out to replace the latch. Thanks very much!
Do you have to take the window out to get to the locking mechanism? Seems a bit excessive but maybe you do. I’m currently trying to do this job on my mk4
Hi, great video, very well done. I need to inspect and possibly repair the passenger door side lock - it is very intermittent in operation. Can you tell me please what the 'spline tool' is that you used near the end of the procedure to get the lock itself out? I have been to Halfords but they do not seem to have what is required - they have hex drive and torx, but nothing like what you used in the video. They were being very helpful, came outside and looked at the car itself, but we were all just 'stumped' as to what this tool is, and what size it is even if we knew what it was. So could you let me know what it is and where I might be able to buy one on the High St. My 2003 GTIPDI does not actually have an external key lock on the front passenger door, do you think I have a blank plastic piece fitted? (it looks as though I do) and I expect I can gently ease it out as if it was actually an external key lock module. Sorry for the long post, well done again.
If u losen yhe bolts holding the glass and hold the glass to the yop of the door with tape. And lower the window regulator with the switch it will lower the guide and u can remove it without the need to remove glass. Its more time consuming but u dont have to worry about breaking the glass somehow.
One of the things none of these posts don't explain is how to put the door handle back in, if you remove it. There is a spring-loaded flap behind the handle which returns the handle closed when you release it. When you put the handle in, you must pull it toward the back of the door while pushing it in. I didn't do this, and sprung the flap so the handle wouldn't engage the flap. I had to hook the flap with wire to pull it out and engage it, because the door handle then wouldn't return flush. Hope my explanation us clear.
Is this the same for the driver's side rear door also? Is there a video explaining how to re-install it? Any help is appreciated. It seems simple and really not worth what the dealership wants to charge to fix this.
Ok people I got a question , my mk4 golf gti 3 door windows have stopped working . I checked fuses all ok , no noise at all when I press the switches both sides and no noise from the motors in doors . any ideas . P's great videos enjoy watching them .
What "spline tool" used for main latch mechanism fastening do you refer to and size? Is there another more specific name, I do not believe it is same as a "Torx" design. I've found no local hardware stores that carry this style of driver bit.
Is this lock module problem the same with the Caddy? my passenger door wont open from the inside or out. I've partially removed the inside door trim to get to the metal inside panel but its difficult without removing it totally. Any suggestions on how to remove the plastic trim totally?
That's a very nice video, as well as the one to disassemble the electronic portion and repair. It's a shame my lock rod mount is hosed and I need to replace the module.
Is it possible to fully remove the T20 bolt that holds the barrel lock in place? My passenger side bolt has a stripped out head and cannot be tightened, and needs to be replaced. Thanks!!!
Top knowledge mate, wonder if you could solve my problem, I can't get passenger door open to get to the module, it's a 2002 VW Golf GT TDI.. Really starting to lose patience.. :(
Please can you explain what way the door lock actuator pin, the metal twisted wire bit, goes into that yellow ish plastic part of the lock, do you have to poke the twisted metal wire bit threw the front of the hole or the back of the hole. The pin that goes up & down I'm referring too, please help I'm having a nightmare connecting it back to the lock. Thankyou.
Hey, thanks for the video. I don't suppose you have a video or even any advice on how to replace a BORA front right side door lock cable on a Golf MK4?
Can you make a video about removing the entire door please.. I have to swap my driver door.. and I'm confused about the wiring.. thanks and grate video's
hi there, thanks for awesome videos, but i actualy have a problem. i've changed The Window lifting mechanism all was fine but now The door pin Will not GO all The way down when i lock The car. how can i fix that?
Hey, so i was popping back in place the Gas cap release switch but when I removed the door panel, the Lock Knob that sticks out just fell out of place. Will I have to remove everything just to get to it? Or can I simply pop it back into place? It's a 01 Gold Sedan
You're my 'go-to' guy for anything Golf Mk4 related. Cheers.
BMAC to the rescue yet again... You can tell he is a VW guy because he has made a video about how to sort out all the issues that have cropped up in my MK4 Gti ....
Watched this and changed my door locks in 75 minutes, never done it before and your video was spot on, thanks very much.
This was really helpful! Thanks!

Greets from Spain and sorry for my english!!
was looking for this. didnt feel like taking the whole window out
Its the screw that you used it release it, if it is in the wrong position it will not fit properly. You have to adjust the screw out until it fits
Got to replace this on my golf tomorrow and this video couldn’t of been more helpful, great work, very informative 😀😀😀
great demo, just replaced my lock unit, should of tried the repair first, got the lock unit out with out taking the key barrel out, just realest the cable from the back from the pull handle , really helpful thanks
One of my new favourite you-tubes..good stuff for us VW owners!
Great I stripped it previously but had to knock out the centre pin that holds the window frome. Was very hard. Your method is much better
Great video, I'm about to replace my door lock module and this has be invaluable.
So i forgot how to take the lock module out againg and boom quick flick thru your channel and once again i fing your a life saver

Nice DIY dude, both the locks on my MK4 have gone so my central locking doesn't work, I'll be using this so I can repair them.
Excellent, I will have new replacement modules in stock shortly in case you want to buy one instead of repairing it.
yet again you have a video of what im looking for cheers dude
How have I not found your vids before?! Great Vids and great work.
Thank you, at least you are here now
The window removal was for illustration purpose only, you can do it without removing the door glass
You are a good man for making these vids much appreciated
this channel is absolutely amazing!! i wish you were around 15 years ago lol it would've saved me alot of guessing and trial and error!! lol
Must say very nice demonstration...
Thanks...

here i am 6 years later, asking myself this very same question about time, so mad no one replied to you
@@aladinhadzic334 Have you done it yet? I was going to do it today but that seems like a lot of work, we'll see.
hi great helpful videos ..just to clarify if i leave the glass in should i wedge it in place..also is it the same procedure for drivers door?
Ok, I take it you replaced the door lock module, if so did you check that it was working before you installed it?

Mine did the exact same on my Seat Leon!! Aaarrrgggggh
Great video! Is it correct that you need to colour match the plastic of the module? i.e. get an all black to replace all black or black and white?
Great video. Easy to follow. I need to replace the door lock cable that I've bought as the little hook that connects to the internal door handle as snapped off. Would you suggest doing all this?
Yes, replace whatever is broken
Thanks for taking the time to make these videos to help us all. :-)
What size triple square did you use to take out the acurator/module?
which locker do you mean? The Key one or the mechanism part?
Thanks...!! I really appreciate your videos....!! They ´re very useful!! Now I can fix my door sensor!! Once again... thanks!! Greetings fron Costa Rica!!!
when you say lock, do you mean the key lock or the locking mechanism?
thanks for the reply, the door handle just seems loose and will swing out all the way but have no affect on the mechanism, its as if it is loose, how can I tighten/slacken the pulley cable if it is this?
BROVO, good job👍👍👍👍🤙
Thank you
The window should be fine where it is, but check it out yourself for your own peace of mind.

I have a question - is it necessary to remove the glass to remove the door latch? Mine has died and I'd rather not have to take the glass out to replace the latch.
Thanks very much!
so if i want to change just micro switch in door lock witch indicate door open/close i must disassembly entire door? (glass, glass motor,....).
Fantastik vids. Very helpful, even for those who do this everyday.
Thanks for the great explanations greetings from Panama
Thanks dude, mines went out yesterday, this will make it easy for me, ill first jus check it to make sure thats the prob
So to remove my front window i just need to remove those 2 screws and take it out?
Video is really helpful, thanks!
Do you have to take the window out to get to the locking mechanism? Seems a bit excessive but maybe you do. I’m currently trying to do this job on my mk4

Behind the handle, in between the actuator assembly and handle, is there a metal “bracket” or latch assembly? Pretty sure that’s what broke on mine.
So if I leave the window in should I keep it all the way up? Will it come crashing down once I remove the motor?

Very good
To be honest it is a common problem, easy fix. Let me know if I can help
You have connected the pulley cable to handle too tight. Put some slack in the wire and try again
Yes blood, Is it an M8 Spline socket for all mk4's up to 2004.
Many thanks.
Obviously for those 2 holding the lock mech to the door.
Is this the same for the driver's side rear door also? Is there a video explaining how to re-install it? Any help is appreciated. It seems simple and really not worth what the dealership wants to charge to fix this.
Nothing is ever worth what a 'Main Stealer' charges. :-(
Thanks bruv this really helped. I'm guessing this is how to fix door sensor and key sensor?
Great videos, these modules are the bane of my life, does anyone know the size of the spline tool needed to remove the module from the door???
Sorted.
Excellent
You can leave the window, but the mechanism has to come out.
Thank you so much for making this video. It helped me out alot. keep up the great work and videos
Great video mate. Cheers for posting.
Mate you uploading this video made my fucking weekend so much easier. Proper nice one.
Very helpful,thanks.
My window mech' wont pull the window down to get to the two window screws?
Identical to the Leon and Toledo
Nice video thanks
No problem

That's a very nice video, as well as the one to disassemble the electronic portion and repair. It's a shame my lock rod mount is hosed and I need to replace the module.
Glad I could help, have you subscribed?
Is it possible to fully remove the T20 bolt that holds the barrel lock in place? My passenger side bolt has a stripped out head and cannot be tightened, and needs to be replaced. Thanks!!!
would you have a part number for this. Any searches I make bring up the wrong one. Cheers.
Top knowledge mate, wonder if you could solve my problem, I can't get passenger door open to get to the module, it's a 2002 VW Golf GT TDI.. Really starting to lose patience.. :(
Please can you explain what way the door lock actuator pin, the metal twisted wire bit, goes into that yellow ish plastic part of the lock, do you have to poke the twisted metal wire bit threw the front of the hole or the back of the hole. you can open the door from the outside but I will have to make a video so you can understand how to do it
What size is the spline tool to remove the locking mechanism mate??
thanks for the video. But, what if the door is closed and it is not possible to open? How to remove the door lock module to change it?
Youre awesome! Always super helpful. Thanks again!
is window removal nessassary to replace the door lock module? Hoping I can leave it in and just do the rest.
No problem
Hey, thanks for the video. I don't suppose you have a video or even any advice on how to replace a BORA front right side door lock cable on a Golf MK4?
Can you make a video about removing the entire door please.. I have to swap my driver door.. and I'm confused about the wiring.. thanks and grate video's
Very helpful and clear videos dude. keep it up..Subbed..
Thanks man
Hi there, is the lock module the same as the Mk1 Leon as it is on a Mk4 Golf please? Thanks.
Which size is the 12 point bit that you "found in one of my boxes"?
Many thanks. Helped a lot. Cheers. Lee
hi there, thanks for awesome videos, but i actualy have a problem. i've changed The Window lifting mechanism all was fine but now The door pin Will not GO all The way down when i lock The car. how can i fix that?
Excellent vid. Explains a lot.
Hey, so i was popping back in place the Gas cap release switch but when I removed the door panel, the Lock Knob that sticks out just fell out of place. Will I have to remove everything just to get to it? Or can I simply pop it back into place? It's a 01 Gold Sedan
having a really hard time trying to put the lock back in to its place- is there some trick to this??? plz help
Any chance you can do a Video of when the Golf MkIV rear door lock refuses to open and how you can open it
Very helpful video, thanks for posting it.
