I think what needs to be understood in the colorism conversation is that it's not something that you can past. When it is something that is embedded in society. Colorism just like racism, sexism and any other ism is a systemic issue. Unless we can systemically change society's thinking it will always be a thing. What we have to do as individuals and communities is instill pride in our children and in our self and teach our kids that regardless of skin tone they are valuable.
I liked the guy with locs ( he look handsome no wonder why he is a model) but he is also very intelligent. Him and the girl with the Afro they had really interesting inputs kudos to them ❤
I am an black American aunty. I am southern. Born in the 70s. My favorite show is Good Times. If you look at that show, all shades have been seen as attractive in America. Your generation is not the FIRST generation here. Droves came in the 70s and droves came in the 90s. I attended an HBCU. We didn't know people were born in Africa or had African parents until we learned of their last names. We just thought they were black American. There are black Americans that look like everyone in the room. The man in the white cap is clueless. Strippers and waitresses make a small amount of money and also hustle for their pay. Many women take a small base pay. There is a gender and color gap. Because it is the corporations that make the offers. Men make more. Women less All black american children are teased at one time or another. Indigenous Africans, do not take it personal. It is done, because black American children have low self esteem. Some are bullies, some do it because it was done to them. I, myself, was made fun of because I was so tall and thin. I also have a bell pepper. The teasing is even worse in the hood-where you are taught to tease back or become physical
Some African Americans are dark skinned. My oldest son is dark skinned (color of dark chocolate) when he was young he was a little insecure about his skin color but now at 26, he really feels he is good looking. Not sure where this issue with African Americans is stemming from. We black too.
Believe it or not there's even colorist in the white community. It's actually been in front of us this entire time but it's not addressed as colorist. For example the obsession with blonds and fair skin. Being red head is taboo, and having brown hair is basically considered the "default" / regular. It's why so many of them bleach their hair. I have a friend who is Eastern European and she has olive skin and curly hair (like type 3a). Her grandparents used to call her a little "n****r" even though she's not black at all (if anything she looks more jewish). Her sister was always praised more than her. Straight hair is also celebrated in the white community. A little wave isn't the end of the but if you're in the type 3 realm, it's generally considered unattractive. It's why in movies like The Princess Diaries and any other film about a glow up, the character starts out with curly hair and later its straightened. They also have featurism. It's why it's not uncommon for Jewish girls to get nose jobs or other non western or northern European to get surgeries to make them look more Nordic. Hitler's entire Arian race thing, if you think about it, is peak colorism in the white community.
Seriously this whole featurism argument irks me. I get that on one hand certain features are discriminated against ,But on the other hand we have to understand that 100 percent black people look different, are different, and can be phenotypically different. The South Sudanese are the prime examples. Don't insult African features by saying it looks like something other than. That is reckless, untrue, and eurocentric.
But that’s the only argument that he made. That some dark skinned people benefit from having features that have more proximity to whiteness. Although all features originate from Africa, the media still pushes a certain “beauty standard” that leans closer to Eurocentrism when it comes to black women. What is reckless about that?
While I understand a lot of peoples pushback on the term “Eurocentric”, because these are Africans features we’re talking about, I think there’s a misunderstanding on the meaning. Saying Eurocentric features doesn’t mean “you have European features” it’s means “the features you have are more uplifted in European cultures because Europeans identify more with having skinnier noses rather than wider noses which they heavily associate with African people” They are still African features they just have different associations in the European culture
none of what you said is relevant to the conversation, south sudanese people will still be privilege based on their more palatable facial features in a eurocentric society
@@wuwu2079 and @Ladies of Sosa hear me out before you dismiss my argument. Other perspectives are just as important. Because we live in a white washed society, we associate everything with them. We look at everyone through ”yt people lens". We are looking looking through a prism that distorts the reality of what they are. Sudanese are the furthest away from whitness as one can possibly get so how are the south Sudanese more privileged based on looks? The proximity that certain people think they have doesn't exist. You guys upset one of the most influential models, Anok yai, by invalidating her unique her beauty for the world to see. Calling her 100% black Sudanese features "eurocentric". That was quite the insult. 😮
@@wuwu2079 Nobody in this video looks to have Eurocentric features. 'The man said we're not seeing big big big lips and wide noses in the Sudanese community.' Yet here he is sitting there with those EXACT features- who told him otherwise? You couldn't make up the dissonance and delusion of some folks. I am not seeing any Ducky Thots or Nicky perkins on this panel. By them describing themselves to look Eurocentric based off their general group even when the people in this panel aren't- is disingenuous and goes to show that they themselves would LIKE to have said features which is ironic becaue the value placed on these features is featurism in itself. I don' t now about the US but nobody on THIS panel is getting an ounce of privilege in the Europe. If anything, they're getting much less. They're Black and that's it no need to embellish their particular brand of Blackness. Black is Black.

Please stop calling us “Spanish ppl” We are Latino or indigenous or mixed race ppl. Spanish ppl are from Spain! The US🇺🇸 has a small amount of Spaniards living here. Stop erasing our identity.
Latino people from the hood call themselves 'Spanish' colloquially, especially Dominicans and Puerto Ricans. Fight with them. Nobody is erasing your identity. The people in the video are speaking on theirs.
3:26 literally never heard this before... never heard a black person say that only black people experience colorism. Not saying there's none that do. Just like a Candice Owens exists any type of black person can exist. however, i don't think it's a common sentiment among black people that only black people face colorism.
I have to disagree with the Featurism part. South Sudanese are beautiful but you guys hardly have any white features. The Africans from the horn or the Fulanis can claim that. Don't get me wrong, you look different from a lot of West Africans, but not in a way that physically brings you closer to white people. I think the main reason you are popular in fashion is because of your height, your distinct features ( like the cheekbones ) and your dark skin. West Africa is also very diverse, I think that a lot of Sudanese look like Senegalese people who look different from the southwest Nigerians, or the Malians. All of these groups have negroids features ( big lips and wide noses ) yet look very different from each other.

Such conversations are needed coz we don't need to forget what we went through for being dark skin, it's HISTORY... In fact ppl shouldn't be silent on racism in general.
What does representation do for our struggles and fight against a white hegemonic system? Black representation is not Black liberation. It's black excellence under a white power structure. And what does perpeuating harmful jokes do to a group of individuals that get ostracized the most with these problematic notions? Especially when we repeat the same material that these colorists, did unto us. No hate, all love to all of y'all and what y'all do but we need to be very critical & socially minded on how various forms of mediums are distributed/its intent. Nothing's ever just "escapism" as America likes to promote it to be.

You guys are purebred and represent our originality as black peoples……. you are unique and beautiful
almost all Africans apart from north are pure bred. Whether lightskins or darkskin
99.9 of black Africans are purebred and the word purebred sounds wrong
