I was 8 y.o. in May of '69 and anticipating the start of summer vacation because my family and I would go on a 2 week tour of the Eastern seaboard of the USA!! ALWAYS a fun time!
"Tommy" is, I think, one of the best albums ever. The band is incredible. The recording is first rate. It speaks to us in ways that The Who didn't realize.
Besides some of the Who's best music, the triple-gatefold album cover is really cool. Especially the one shown here, with the band members' photos interspersed in the grid on the LP cover. Worth owning on vinyl!
That news report … with the Vietnam map behind the reporter … I saw such an image so many times on our little b&w television in our kitchen. I remember it clearly … I would turn only 4 late in the year … but remember clearly being afraid of Vietnam and ending up there one day. (I was an introspective kid! lol). We had moved from Charleston, SC back to Columbia, SC back in January of that year. And I’d soon become a big astronaut fanatic … like so many kids then. Thanks, Fred. Btw - I always love your idea of pairing media items of the day (Magazine covers, comics, albums, movie posters, etc) with the music of that same month. Very effective in giving you a feel for the times. Terrific.
"A peace we can live with". We're still looking for that unicorn. While it's nice to look back to "the good old days", I often do with real fondness, the Vietnam War is sobering reminder of some of the days back then that were not so good. Still, I'm glad I lived to see those days. Thanks again Fred for the video collage.
The month of May...1969. A favorite year of mine let alone month: The Indianapolis "500" was run and famous driver, Mario Andretti won the "500". Some great made movies made that year: "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid"... "True Grit" and "Midnight Cowboy" to name a few. Then, there was the famous "Woodstock" in New York. The rock/pop tunes during the whole year... great to play over and over, now and then.
Those catchy jingles and smiling happy people on the cigarette commercials, is it any wonder so many people smoked lol. Again thank you Fred for another wonderful glimpse of the past!!!
Turned 4 years old on the 3rd of this month. I tried a cigarette once. Tasted foul and disgusting to me. smh "Destroy All Monsters" was the last decent film with Godzilla of the Showa era. Oh my! Captain America #113. A Steranko masterpiece. Owned 5 or 6 of them over the years. Had one perfect one I should have kept, even though money was tight. "The Torture Chamber of Dr. Sadism" aka "The Blood Demon" and "Castle of the Walking Dead" is a personal favorite of mine. The background music during the pendulum scene really grabs me. "Mackenna's Gold" I thought was earlier in the 60's. Makes sense to me now, with the Julie Newmar nude scene couldn't have been earlier. The music of this vid was well picked. All great songs! Thanks Fred.
Another great video Fred. I figure I am about eight months older than you and I grew up in Ohio. The music and images in your videos are burned in my memory. Thanks for all you do.
A few of my best memories were the new "head shops" selling hippie stuff in glass cases and the waterbeds with tapestries separating the rooms. The smell of incense and the flavored "rolling papers" by ZIG ZAG. Black light posters and button fly jeans.
Awesome show Fred, thank you! It seemed like the nightly news then was Vietnam or the moon, I was only 8 and remember little else. Sure did have great cars then, and music! 😊
Your music choices never disappoint Fred. I’m pretty sure I’ve listened to “Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere” more times than any other album I’ve owned.
I was 7 then, and eagerly anticipating the moon launches, even taping newspaper articles on the door of the boys' room (which I shared with my brothers growing up). And funnily enough, in 2019 I watched the "Happy Together" Tour at the Ohio State Fair, and one of the groups performing was the Cowsills, who unironically sang "Hair". So much fun at that concert.
Thanks for another Fred-ucational trip back into our heritage as a country…Have we learned anything? Maybe a bit…We had some odd movies-Now our prehistoric monsters are in congress…Some of our greatest rock icons were yet to reach their pinnacle. Cigarettes were still in fashion…the GPS was in its infancy… we were just a couple of months away from the moon…great up and coming sports stars…and yes, the classiest cars ever!
I love "Time Is Tight"! My Mom had the 45 record when I was a kid. Years later, I got to see the film, "Uptight," from which that record was part of the soundtrack. An interesting film, directed by Jules Dassin.
Hi, Fred: Time Is Tight is my favourite Booker T song. Everybody's Talkin' was a great song but the movie was nasty. I have multiple videos of yours tucked away for later; I just can't keep up with you! I have the 45 Gimme Gimme Good Lovin'. The flip side is the same song backwards and at a different speed and is called, Hips And Lips.
10:54 I don't remember that cover. I must have already stopped reading comic books by them. i am still amazed at the thousands of comic books i bought in about 5 short years from '64 to '69ish
1967, San Francisco, Hippies, Monterey Pop, etc. Culturally 60 through 63 was still the 50s. 64 was all Beatles.65 started the 60s Calif. (love) fad. The 60s mind set ended on 8/9/69.
The "militants" are now the professors. Cronkite was so enthusiastic about the moon landing. I loathe the idea of a senator thinking he should influence what's on TV. Anissa Jones would live to be only 18. What a year. It's been a long time since people thought GM cares were excellent. Found that Christopher Lee movie online. Fun stuff! So sad that people took astrology seriously. Thanks Fred.
Wouldn't call myself a junkie, TP, especially today. But I did like 'em as a kid (and reviving those times is what this is all about) and I can still enjoy them now if I watch with friends who remember them as I do.
Magazines and Books in the 60's and 70's really were equivalent to the current day internet when it came to influencing people.
May 1969...I remember it well - the 29th of May was my 12th birthday. What a year!

Just watched Midnight Cowboy again recently. It still holds up after 55 (!) years.
Nothing better than a vintage FF on a Wednesday!
Thanks, ants....

The greatest year in the history of music

Thanks, Chris. Those media items said a lot about us. As for me, I was 15, so you can imagine how concerned I was about Vietnam!

This was worth the view alone to see Boris Karloff touting steak sauce

To say that music was great is an understatement. 🎶🎵🎶

America: From the summit to the shit hole...that was us, Doug.
I was 14 in 1969. And my eyes were just beginning to open.
The General Motors ad shown 11 minutes appears to have accurately predicted the future of GPS, which was was almost 4 decades away at that time!
Wow just wow seen the cowsills at an oldies concert with our granddaughter I love it!!
Glad you enjoyed it, Sandra.

Thanks, 6blade. I do what I can despite YT restrictions.
Thanks for another great video, Fred! Who knew Nixon was... Mr. Complete Honesty.
Just like all presidents I suppose, CG.
Thanks Fred 👍
There should be a UA-cam Video Awards. Your productions are so good you’d be a top contender Fred.
That's nice of you to say, thegoldendog.
That deaf, dumb and blind kid sure plays a mean pinball!
I don't know how you do it, Fred, another great look into The America We Knew 🥴
The Who was my first concert, in 1972 I think. I was still in high school. They did Pinball Wizard, of course.
Thanks, George.

Teddys future was so bright at that time he " had to wear shades " but a storm cloud was on the horizon !
Two months later, the Kennedy curse hit again. Chappaquiddick and Mary Jo Kopechne. Too bad it took Mary Jo, too.
Thanks Fred, I had fun!
Good to know, 1208bug.
Thanks Fred for another great video

Oh my God I just met Judy Collins on Saturday in Ithaca New York when she played a concert with Graham Nash
Wow!

Hamburger Hill in Vietnam battle occurred on the exact day My sister was born May 10, 1969.
The lead singer of crazy elephant was actually the original lead singer of the 1950s group the Cadillacs
Good fun.
