If you have cats, you need to get harnesses and leashes for them. You may have to travel on foot and not be able to carry them, and you cannot let them run free because they are prey for coyotes. You might also have to forego the litter box in the car and get them to use the toilet outside on the grass.

I just updated ours too after seeing what happened to Asheville. I added a Fannypack attached to the backpack in case they need to ditch the heavy backpack. The Fanny pack is really the essentials. Insulin, epi pens, Inhaler, meds.
Cat rescuer in tornado valley here! You're going to want a hard plastic cat carrier. Yes, it takes up more space and is more expensive, but well worth price, you can even find ones with wheels to be able to even easier transport your kitties. Predators can easily tear into the mesh sides of these as well as if your kitties get scared/stressed/bored they can claw out. Its also not going to protect them in a car accident or fallen debris like a hard shell carrier
Rich people are not like you or me. They compete with each other in yachts, jewelry, art, travel and homes. Meanwhile, we're on the subway or bus with our precious Louis Vuittons. Why bother? *hotdups* More rational.

I try to review my 72-hour kit supplies every 6 months, so now is the time (for me)! 😁 You have stated you are new to kitties: love the thought & energy you put in for their benefit! One thing to consider: get them both a harness & leash to pack with their kits. If the situation allows, they would probably benefit from ‘stretching their legs’, and with a leash you won’t lose them, even if something startled them. If a harness / leash is new to them, work with to get them used to them now, so in an emergency situation they are already used to them. ❤️
For the cat litter, try using newspaper in a baggie to keep it dry. It’s a little bit less bulky and all you have to do is tear it up and put it in the box they’ll use it.
Wood shavings can be relatively lightweight while still filling the litter box quite a bit. It is wise to try it out before needing it, so you know how much you need for your cats. But my guestimate is that 8 ounces will get you quite far. By packing it without loosening it (you generally buy it compressed), it will take very little space, while having quite a lot of volume once in use.
Thank you for making this so easy. I'm making my own which is difficult to accomplish. And realistically a Go bag is good, but I love the big tote you added. It makes so much sense. Now I can fit everything. Thanks.

I am very late I know, but I just wanted to mention that you should take any batteries out of devices before you store them long-term. I hope y'all don't need them at all, but battery corrosion happens faster than you'd think. I'd also recommend replacing the pack of batteries in your kit every year or so, just to make sure they're still good. They stop being as affective after awhile and the only thing worse than being underprepared in an emergency is being prepared only to find out your gear is no good.
I watched your last one of these videos about a year and a half ago and immediately made one for my dog and I. I'm so thankful I saw the video and did because my apartment building had a fire a few months back and while I wasn't actually displaced, knowing I had this bag with me with everything I needed for me and my dog took a huge level of stress off of me.
Very important to also pack extra underwear, you can get an infection if you wear dirty underwear for many days. Probably the most important item in the clothing bag.
A good option may even be a pack of disposable undies. Pull ups for littles, and something like TENA incontinence pants for the adults. They're light and can be discarded after use.
I may have missed it, but did you include a couple pairs of nitrile gloves for handling contaminated items and your emergency records binder? I love your choices and organization. Be safe!
Also helpful hint on box under the carrier. Wrap it in plastic wrap or something or just bring a regular cheap litter box just punch a hole in the corner and rope tie it to the backpacks. You might also want to upgrade those backpacks to more camping style backpacks for the adults. As for kitty litter. Just regular dirt from outside would work if you have to bug out. Make sure kitty documents are stored too
all last night been watching 72 hr emergency kits and heating, when i came back on this morning your video popped up on my page. i love the idea of the backpack. i sent this to both my daughters. yes if you have pets you need to make something for them. my church does what are called crisis care kits, which helps when there is a disaster, the main warehouse i think is in Penn. thank you for your idea as well... the only thing is that my youngest granddaughter and I have to have things that are gluten free. so that will be a challenge, but we will figure it out

Jennifer, look for the Tidy Cat Lightweight Litter. It’s a little bit more expensive but the weight limit is drastically less! I just put a gallon size ziplock freezer bag of it in my cat’s go bag. I’m not sure if there’s a better way to transport it, but I figured it was enough for at least one or two small boxes.

The scent can help calm them :) And harness train them and put the harnesses and leashes together with the cat supplies!! And some kinds of dry meats with no flaworings would be nice as treats 😁 It would actualy be great to keep the carrier in your living space a few weeks to realy make them used to it and to put their scent into it!!
For the cat litter in a car we use a storage container. We got one for $5 from Walmart with a lid. Then cut a hole into the side we wanted so they could enter as they wanted. It’s not too big to take up a bunch of space in the car but large enough so that our larger boy can comfortably be inside with plenty of space to move around. Our litter we use is the wood chips that people use for animal bedding usually. It works great, it’s lightweight and super cheap. We get a giant bag from Walmart for $9 that lasts us months though they have smaller packs too. We put a blanket that we can shake out and wash easily in front for any wood chip transfer, as well as a corrugated scratched in front of the hole to help catch any litter as well and they can scratch after getting out. We also sometimes put pee pads in the bottom of the container and that helps too. The wood chips also don’t smell as much as litter imo.

You can teach your cats to do their business outdoors. You can also just add a small shovel (like what hikers use) to fill the litter box with sand/dirt/small rocks instead of carrying litter with you.

Yes, that gives time if people in the family get separated and need to rendevu at our safe spot or need to figure out more permanent relocation or travel or help from emergency services. (Our family does not rely on the government services for immediate assistance for housing or food in the event of a disaster) Hope this provides some clarification.
Also, in the likely event that we lose power. It may take the city a couple of days to recover electricity. We may actually need more days if the stores remain closed for a couple of days due to the outages.
I would get better backpacks, especially for kids. Those have almost zero back support and no chest strap. Also family photos and contact details of you and extended family so if (I hope never happened) you guys get separated whoever see the kids knows who to contact. Pull opened cans are great but they may break so you still need can openers.
