The 2X4 idea is genius. I have seen the PVC before. I like the mobility of everything and have seen some similar ideas, but that 2X4 idea makes it less cumbersome to manage. Thanks for the tip!
Best part of this whole video is you and your daughter doing it together.. memories forever for both of you.. how awesome! I'm going to do this over my sq. ft. boxes. thanks for the ideas.
Thanks for these clear and easy-to-understand directions. I especially appreciate the tip on hammering the metal pipes below the level of the box. A great video.
Good design with the plastic stapled to the removable side rails. Just lift the side rail to access the produce then roll it up when the warm weather comes. Thanks for sharing!
There is a grower in Northern Wisconsin called "Canopy Gardens" that uses the same concept only larger canopies and they grow food 11 months out of the year. That proves that you're right about growing either year around or at least longer. You're doing a good job raising your daughter too. It's good to see a strong bond between father and daughter, and growing food together is just the right thing to teach our children.
I am also in VA and have plans of grandeur for a raised bed year round garden. It is wonderful to happen upon your videos, and to partake in your knowledge sharing. Thank you!
Now you have me digging and removing rock to level the ground for my new green house. Think I'll expand it up a few feet and modigy it some. Your idea very good start for me. Thanks again...
Nice Job! I think Chloe will be going in to sales / Presentations when she joins the workforce...did a very nice job and seemed comfortable presenting it!
Thank you for the explanation and directions on how to construct one of these. That is really awesome and I had no idea how basic it really is. I always figured those structures cost a pretty penny to construct, but you showed me otherwise. I wish you great success on your next crop. Cheers
I really like how you attach it, so much easier than stapling it on to the bed each year and tearing your plastic each time. Love your assistant btw. :)
Wonderful idea and am looking forward to make this when we will be back in WA. I can't wait to eat vegetables that I grow by myself. Thanks for the video :))
i think you guys are very awesome, Harold is a trick(LOL) i have been looking for this kind of thing, an there you are. thanks for the tips for Winter growing. keep up the good work.
That is a great job guys. My kids and I are going to do this this week, It is alot better for our size of yard seeing we live in a military neighborhood, not on a farm. we are stationed here in Dyess AFB in Tx, and I am planning on doing 8 of these, raised garden beds and then in anohter area an in ground for corn in spring. Our winters are mild normally, compared to yours, but the wind is year round. I also am going to do do black 5 gal, buckets for watering and added heat for winter. GBU
Nice system. I haven't used the EMT pipe -- good idea. You're right about gardening all year round. We get lettuce and spinach all winter long in Utah.
+TechComm at USU ...High....gonna try a garden this year and in Southern Utah above Cedar and am at round 8,500 ft...just want salad stuff, think I can grow tomatoes and lettuce up here?...Thanks
I did something similar in Kingman, AZ, last winter except I put gallon jugs of water inside the mini "greenhouse". They heated up during the sunny days and released the heat at night and kept the inside of that "greenhouse" between 70-80 degrees. Grew snap peas, lettuce, carrots, beets, and kale. I also grew Golden Wax beans, which grew well but didn't produce beans until March when the days got long enough. Still, beans in March, and lots of them, was very cool.
You are more than welcome! Urban hoop in the Big Apple! Good luck and thank you for watching! Make sure (if you haven't already) to subscribe so you can get updates when we post videos and find us on Facebook: Nature's Friends. :)
wow, great design idea, just set my mother in law up with this, used 7 PVC 'ribs' in an 8 foot bed, and got away with using exactly 2 10 ft pieces of EMT, and the guy at home depot was nice enough to cut it all for me!
Wow such a great idea. You and your daughter made a wonderful video on a garden. Thank you so much great simple idea for protection of your garden. Bob Ayrsman Palm Springs, Fl.
I found this video last year, March 2016 and I built five 4x4's and five 4x8's using this hoop house. It's EASY and it WORKS. I live in S/W Illinois across the river from St Louis,mo and I grew carrots, cabbage and beets ALL winter long under this hoop house. It's May, 2017 and I just pulled the last of my 2016 carrots. All you need to build this hoop house is a hacksaw, tape measure and a hammer. I built my 4x8 for $21.00 for the PVC pipe and a few dollars for the emc pipe and it only took one beer... lol
Harold and Chloe thanks for this video on how you make your hoops. I like your idea of making your hoops from 3/4" PVC and then slipping it on to the 1/2" metal piping. We are here in Southern California so we never get snow but I want to use it for shading some of our veggies during the hot sunny days. Peace & Love from Encino,CA :-)
While you shouldn't take credit as the original designer of this system, you & your daughter have made a good demonstration of the method. I think the first time I saw this design, it was way back in a "Mother Earth News" magazine years ago. Thanks for reminding people how easy it is to make, and keep up the gardening videos with your daughter, you make a great team.
You can even leave the hoops up and put netting over the bed to keep deer and birds away depending on what you grow. Because of high temp. this year I also put a roll of dark screen over my bed for some relief (works great).
audience "scooby the cat" lol very nice, thank-you for this vid. I'm going to do the same thing but with bug netting over the hoops so my potatoes won't be eaten by them colorado potato bugs again this year. Thanks for the prototype! Plus, I might try extending my gardening season into the fall using the plastic! (I'm in Ontario Canada, it gets way too cold to garden all winter up here, but I can extend the season by a month or so maybe?)
This is one of the simplest and strongest mini hoop houses I have seen. I like that you did not use a half in pvc because 3/4 inch is much stronger and also that you spaced it every 15 inches. Just one thing you could do is add a center beam that runs horizontally and joins all hoops together, it increases the strength very much.
I was wondering if you use specially manufactured greenhouse plastic (with UV inhibitors) or if you use the less expensive hardware store type? Also, I wanted to say that I think that it's great that you are getting Chloe involved with this. That is great for her development of presentation skills, self esteem, etc. Great job guys!
I loved the idea with the boards on the plastic sheeting, then dropping it down.Great video, you've already did the math for us.Thanks so much.
You know, this was a great video, not just a great idea but just such a nice family. Thanks
How adorable is she? Lol reminds me of my dad and I.except I'm 45 and my dad is now 72 yrs young. Beautiful
Great video! Nice to see parent and child doing something constructive together!
