The Royer 101 Ribbon Microphone is a great, affordable ribbon mic for live as well as studio applications. Jason Richmond, SoundPure Studios Head Engineer, demonstrates how to how he records electric guitars using a ribbon mic like the Royer R-101 or the Royer 121 with a dynamic mic like the Heil PR40 or a standard Shure SM57. This technique works wonderfully for a variety of playing styles - rock, jazz, clean, distorted, you name it. Jason also discusses the benefits and drawbacks from using this technique. Thanks to Eddie Berman and Scott Sawyer for their fantastic playing. Call Sound Pure today with any questions regarding the gear or techniques in any of our videos. 919.682.5552. or 888.528.9703.

Thanks - yes, dynamic range is tough to come by in a lot of the squashed-sounding youtube videos we are encountering these days. Clean tones is often where people can hear the difference between pro-level gear (And pro-level placement), and gear that is simply not stacking up. Thanks for clarifying this.

this is an awesome video!! It was the exact technique I was looking for an example of, under 5 minutes, and the fact that you actually AB'd the mics, and showed you changing the levels on the faders, really helped to identify the difference in the sounds!

This is mainly an aesthetic question that will depend on the sound / texture you require. If you use the 121 & 57 at the same time, you will want to have them equi-distant from the drivers to maintain phase coherence. If you using only the 121 then a couple feet off the cabinet where the sound from the two speakers is additive might be the best spot to accompish your goal.
Watch the SoundPure video "How to get a quick electric guitar sound with stereo amps " -- it works on mono amps too!!

Wow that's super nice. Just finished my home built ribbon, and coupled with my OK quality dynamic mic this will be awesome.

In the Flickenger portion of this video, we were using Rich Flickinger's amazing Spaghetti Western all-Tube Spring Reverb. They are extraordinary - please give us a ring if you'd like to learn more about them - musical, versatile, and well-priced, probably the best dedicated spring reverb you can get today

i get your point. i am only saying, i used to do multi mic setups with a dynamic and a ribbon, but when i heard the vr, it combined the snap of a dynamic and the mids of a ribbon. let me refrase, an alternative to multimicing could be a modern ribbon mic, its easier to setup ( no phase alignment ) and you have all the eq in your computer to tug it in afterwards anyway. :) not dissing your mic choices, just saying it can be simpler.

Could be -- I am probably the worst guitar player on the SoundPure staff, but while my personal tone is a product of my lack of prowess on the instrument, every now and again I'm able to get something useful... and when I do, this particular recording setup is able to capture all I'm capable of producing... and presenting it as something that sounds a little better than what came out of the amp [which at the end of the day is what we're all really aiming to accomlish when recording].

Come on guys, up the anti and crank the gain... these demos alone don't give me enough to go on. I have heard others ask for the same, why do another video with this clean jazz inspired playing? Let's get some grind, that's what a great majority of people will be using these for.

    I love how a $100 sm57 really does hold up a $1k+ Royer

Hardly. All due respect, the sE ribbon has a unique sound... and sometimes its appropriate, but sometimes its inappropriate. There are no "one size fits all" solutions.
The purpose of the wvideo to illustrate how you can employ a variety of tools to create a variety of textures -- textures that can hopefully help you achieve a tonal capture that supports the musical statement to the fullest extent it can be conveyed. The point wasn't which tools were used - it was HOW the tools were used.

I have been recording my 2x12 cab with two SM57 mics, one pointed straight into each speaker (an Alnico Gold and a G12M Greenback). If I'd like to blend an R121, would it make sense to close-mic the R121 to just one of the speakers (i.e., same distance as one of the SM57s? If I place the R121 a bit back and centered between the two speakers, I'm concerned that I'll get phase issues. I'll experiment with it, but would appreciate your thoughts if you've done something like this before. Thanks!
