Gary Snyder's sense of place (I'm from Butte County) is, as alluded in the talk, gnarly. And, thanks for introducing me to "Obata's Yosemite"

Sensei Synder is the teacher that I wish all students could meet in their lives. Once I was following Synder around like a puppy dog in Missoula at a wilderness conference...he mostly ignored me...but once,,,, when I was particularly unaware,.HE SUDDENLY TURNED TO ME and said WHAT IS IT?!! It was like a slap and it woke me up.

Brilliant book. Such an eclectic mix. A voice that needs to be heard today. Check out Robin Wall K. for those interested in similar writing.
My wife and I read Turtle Island on our backpacking trip in Washington... Wouldn't want anymore out of life.

    Do I have bad Poetry
    DEATH
Glorious death, endless death, ceaseless death
dead as yesterday's burning campfire ashes
maggots feed on the body of truth ceaseless
    dead as yesterday's burning campfire
maggots feed on the body of truth
mutilated remains of what was, rotting away
food for scavengers of the winds of the world
As vultures of sugary flattery and harsh anger,
    soar and dive
as flies of burning slander and bloated renown
    buzz and crawl
as jackals of hot pleasure and searing agony
    growl and gnash
    PRAYER
    Church
    Prayer
    functions
    free of acceptance and rejection
    BEWILDERMENT
moving along the dark road vanishes
    no self, no road
    over rivers of change

With a little more integrity Snyder would have started with, "That introduction was the biggest load of b.s. I ever heard, and if you were moved by it you have no chance of being a philosopher, poet, Buddha or anything else he just laid on you on my behalf."

I am 65 - Can we bring back the word "COOL" and wear it out all over again. For example... I will walk to the store - not drive. COOL I will use water - there are a bunch of ways. COOL I will not throw trash out the car window again - in fact, I might even pick some up that is not mine. COOL Do something(s) today - cool the planet. BE COOL What do I know?

Is nude protest against world pollution allowed. That the be an unusual way for people to, all at once, 'be seen' and 'Ah - take a stand'. For what they believe - non violent.

I made another error above. I will make no more corrections to my 'beautiful' stupidity - COOL? Not always.
