Really great to listen/hear you speak about these pesky things that irritate us musicians. Especially when you say "It's never done"! So very true. I suppose nothing worth pursuing is worth doing badly! Thanks for your honesty, & caring enough to talk like a real person as much as a professional who struggles with the same stuff we lesser players struggle with! Best wishes. Pb

I love how raw and candid this video is. Even in the video Bob doesn’t seem to want to enter the studio and ends up filming in the entry way. Maybe intentional, maybe subconscious. Either way your personality shines through, Bob! Good luck on your upcoming endeavors!

Hey Bob, thanks for this, I'm just getting back to your channel, I'm a guitarit and there is little I find motivating on youtube pertatining to my instrument so it is good to find honest and nurturing advice and sharing by musicians on other instruments. Watching this I am reminded of Miles 'Take the horn out of your mouth' so I thought I'd share my idea. Make a practice session completable by, taking the horn out of your mouth after say, ten minutes. Set a goal that can be achieved in ten minutes (for me today it's finding the guide tone line from the fifth in Embraceable you in open position in all keys whilst pulsing the root and playing the melody square) so....... four bars, one key and after ten minutes GET UP. Next DONT pick my instrument up until I have chosen the next completable task ( so that I will know when it is complete and when to put the instrument down) . There is a track on my channel called 'For Maggie and Moreno' , you might like it (it's Gypsy Jazz on a flamenco guitar with classical technique) and you might hate it. Any way, thanks again for reminding me that the expectation that we should be superhuman is the most emotionally damaging, creatively stifling and fun sapping part of practice. The reason for this ridiculous expectation are the frank dishonesty and vanity of most (and mostly unaccomplished) pundits and a society which invites us to compare ourselves with the nonsens that the conceited claim.

Yesterday I was reading "Atomic Habits" (I highly recommend that book) and it says that a way to get rid of procrastination it's to start doing the smallest thing you can do, like practicing for 2 minutes, kind of like fooling yourself into practicing, cause once you're there practicing, you'll probably keep practicing. Knowing that you have to practice and learn 50 songs is scary, but learning 1 song it's at least, less scary. Something like that !

On one hand, having very high expectations on how much to accomplish in a day can be counterproductive. The best is actually to set easy to achieve goals. Accomplishing an easy task will sling shot you to actually do much more. And you will feel great in the end.
One the other hand, demotivation can be a sign of fatigue. It is also important to have down time. I know musicians that say that you have to double your practice for every day you don't practice. A bunch of nonsense of course.

Hey Bob, a while ago I made a comment saying how this was one of the best vlogs saying things like I had to miss out on Jacob Collier in Atlanta because I didn't have a paycheck trying to pursue music as a job. I've just wanted to say I've been working at a pizza place during the day so that I have at least rent money and have been there for 1.5 years now and have assisted in two staff firings and one hiring so far..its been a place that keeps me sane after having tried working from home and hating being home for 8 hours and being home for another 4 hours.. I just didn't know how to combat that.
But in relevance to your vlog for this episode, I know that I need to switch to a 9-5 so I can have more fun after after I've earned rent money cause no ones out at 1pm on a Friday..and I got a local dive bar with a stage to follow my ~10 follower instagram page recently lol (its just literally for fun and for posting photos/videos of rehearsals for now).. I've been learning how to sing just to carry a tune, starting with Sara Bareilles's Love Song, and hope to have my co driver do some tenor sax improve on it downtown at the park..and I spent $100 on Jacob Collier vip tickets for Charlotte and we made it onto his youtube channel in April :D Keep doing your thing Bob \m/

it's almost relieving seeing that even professional, touring musicians struggle with the exact same practice procrastination I do. I think it's important to know that this is normal, not a sign that of lack of dedication etc that I always feared. I saw someone mention Atomic habits, I'll check it out if it tackles this topic.
It's a really good point you made, that music never feels completable. I recently realized that just because music is creative doesn't mean that I get the satisfaction of creating things. I wonder if it's possible to ever feel like you "completed" something with music?
