Merci pour cette vidéo, je ne suis pas particulièrement fan de Jerry Lewis et je souhaiterais savoir pourquoi il semble avoir eu un gros impact en France -du moins il y a un bon moment et que cette pourquoi cette "fascination" française à l'époque a été passablement moquée aux USA et encore récemment ?
Your questions are difficult to answer, but I will try as briefly as possible. American film critics never really liked Jerry Lewis. After he and Dean Martin split as a team in 1956, the critics did not like his brand of comedy: he was too loud, too childlike, always the same thing, etc. And the critics certainly did not like it when Jerry Lewis started to produce, write and direct his own films. The only film that the film critics appreciated was Docteur Jerry et Mister Love / The Nutty Professor. The filmgoing public, however, liked his films; they all showed a profit. Jerry Lewis's heyday was in the first half of the 1960s. After that, American culture and society changed, and many people no longer found him funny. His TV shows in the 1960s were also not successful.
The French were different. The French film critics appreciated Jerry Lewis as a true auteur. The fact that Jerry Lewis became popular in France was mainly due to one film critic, Robert Benayoun. He was a real fan of Jerry Lewis and met him several times over the years, mainly in the US, but also in France. The French critics were willing to analyze Lewis's films. (Actually Lewis thought the French analyzed his films too deeply, they interpreted things he did not intend.) They saw in him an innovator and as the best director of comedy in the US at that time. And not only in France was Jerry Lewis so popular; also in other European countries. He won several European awards as the best foreign director of the year.
Back in America, the critics and later the public could not understand what the French found so great about Jerry Lewis. Much of this also has to do with Americans not understanding French culture and an unwillingness to try to understand. The attitude was: the French eat frogs' legs, so what can they possibly know?
