Fantastic cinematography and excellent narrative! The grouse and reindeer were exceptionally beautiful! What a wonderful introduction to a new lens that will certainly become a favorite among wildlife photographers!
Thank you, so glad you enjoyed the cinematography and narrative, it was epic exploring the tundra and getting out with the new lens! I certainly think it will rapidly become a favourite for many!
Nice job! The first three minutes of annoying background song, however , completely overshadowed your voice and destroyed the tranquility of the video on wildlife photography. The rest of the soundtrack was better.
Awesome. I see you’re shooting with the 400 F2.8 for a few, I have to imagine that felt like a tank. Canon really dropped the ball on their super telephoto lenses. Nikon will be king again with the value and quality they are bringing
Yes the old 400 2.8 did feel like a tank in comparison! The new 800 is just a different t breed of lens and the quality to price ratio is just unmatched!
Interesting video and lens. For birds photography would be super useful. Being a Sony user I hope Sony makes something like that. Thanks for sharing. Take care Tom!!
Thanks for a great intro to this game changing lens Tom. Stunning stills and video of the Grouse and the Reindeer. I will be placing an order for this amazing lens.
Glad you enjoyed it, It was awesome getting the chance to preview the lens in such a stunning location, I was blown away by the stability for the video...800mm handheld slow motion video... Just awesome! Paired with the Z9, this thing was rather wonderful!
Hello Tom, very informative video with a good selection of photographs. Unfortunately this lens is way out of my reach but seeing your passion for wildlife photography makes the pain of not having one a bit easier. Thanks for sharing and continue to stay safe 😷
Thanks Malcolm, for sure even though many are saying how “affordable” this lens is for what it does it’s still a huge investment, so glad you enjoy the videos, I’ll do my best to keep them up!
Hmmm ...the Canon counterpart cost over 17k while this around 7k. Same reach, same function and same 6.3 but the Nikon version is smaller and lighter? So where's the logic to get the Canon version? It's beyond me? So this new Nikon tele is a no brainer folks. Excellent video Tom!
The Canon is actually f/5.6 but that really isn’t much of a difference and also doesn‘t necessarily mean that the Canon is any brighter. Also the RF 800mm f/5.6 only offers 4 stops of stabilization whereas the Nikon has up to 5.5
@@TomMasonPhoto It's a wonderful lens for the price but sadly out of my price range! - Nikon really are doing a fantastic job with their mirrorless system.
Tom, Love the videos thanks. A question for you please: what bag do you use to take the 800mm into the field. I have just purchased mine and want to take it with a body attached along with my 400mm 4.5 with a body attached. Tripod etc. Gitzo Adventury 45L? Thanks
Absolutely beautiful photos and videos! I've noticed when shooting with my 400mm I sometimes get heat waves distorting the image even in winter. I imagine that would be even more true with 800mm. How do you deal with that when you come across it?
I have come across it a few times in the past but not on this trip, personally I tend just to avoid the shooting angle or re position, mainly it’s only when I’m not close enough to my subject I can see them, when I’m actually within what I’d personally classify as “photographic range” I rarely have seen them due to the obvious fact of just being closer with less distance between me and my subject when rising vapour/heat can interfere!
Thanks - nice video. I am looking forward to enjoy that lens once available. The one thing which made me smile was that 10 meters to that grouse, which really doesn’t require an 800 mm.
I had no hope of getting one, but the local camera dealer got four in and for one of them the guy decided not to buy it after all. If I bought it that day, I could have it! Now Nikon has stopped taking orders for them. Maybe a year's wait.
I didn't end up getting one of these because I added the 600mm F4 to my kit, the lightweight nature is fantastic for the 800mm PF but for my work the weight isn't really an issue and the flexibility of rate 600mm f4 with the built in TC was a no brainer, although obviously its a far more expensive lens than the 800mm!
Hi Tom, what a piece of kit this lens is, - wow - i-m not up to snuff with the nikon 'z series' as I've seen reviews that the - z series are married to video and not so much stills, - is this urban myth or fact? Love your videos, I love your enthusiasm, regards. Stuart
Hey Stuart, so I think one of the big bonuses of the Z system is for video creation, better AF for video, as well as shooting modes/ frame rates and codec but for stills it also had some great upgrades - silent shooting, faster speeds, as well as the ability in the viewfinder to have a live preview of how images will look and a constant histogram, all super handy for the stills shooter as well!
Canon shooters crying in their coffee, lol. Nikon smashing mirrorless out of the park! Great to see you getting to these amazing places Tom and thanks a bunch for sharing it with us.
Great sneak peak! Greetings from Bulgaria. I was staying away from Wildlife photography but here I am and oh lawd, I'm getting anxious... I've asked on Steve Perry's video but another point of view would be good. I'm shooting on z6ii and having 100-400mm Z but no other telephoto lenses but of course that now I want, haha. The real life however is with limited or no existent budget but anyway, I'll get them but the question is what should a person like me (I'm not a driver but backpacker) choose in case I can get F mount 600mm f/4 FL VR for the same price NOW or to pre-order this brand new 800mm 6.3 ? :S I want the reach but the faster F stop is always priority... until we talk about the size/weight being the real issue. If I get the 600mm this means more expenses on buying FTZ + 1kg heavier lens and eventually gimbal head, although Peak Design's tripod is top quality. Any advice would be great and happy shooting!
That's a hard one, in terms of long distance carrying, the new 800mm PF is going to be a dream, far easier to lug about, especially if you don't have a car/transport and are walking long distances. The 600 f4 is a epic bit of kit too, gives that extra little bit of aperture but would need the FTZ etc for the Z mount... I'd probably look out for the 600mm on the Z roadmap if the purchase doesn't need to be imminent. The 800mm PF however will certainly be the lightest of the options for that ultra tele reach!
@@TomMasonPhoto I'm pretty sure the 600Z will be with TC like the 400Z and no matter f4 or f2.8 - it will be waaay more expensive than this 800 or 600 f4 Fmount. Damn it.... decisions-decisions... Thank you for the answer!
The 800 mm is the new 50 :) Nice video.. You guys got some great images/footage. Nice to see the 800 mm focal length getting some love. I do wonder about the blown out whites in some of the shots. is that limit of the Z9 dynamic range ? Or exposer/post processing issues or just personal choice ?
Hey Gregory, in regards to highlights I think it may be a limitation on UA-cam compression rather than the Z9 as in my Lightroom none of the images when exported or processed are clipped on the whites. I do find it’s quite hard sometimes to display photography properly on UA-cam! Nothing like a real print for sure. Cheers, Tom!
Yes I swapped with Konsta who had his older 400 2.8 as we were making some comparisons for the shoot, all the images were made on the 800 PF that you see in the video! Just we didn’t have two lenses to both have one at all times!
this movie made me laugh. firstly, it is at such a time of the year and in such an open area you can have such a dark lens. in case you go to the forest you will cry that you have something like that in your hand. Another thing, do not crawl because in the snow you are dressed in black anyway and the animals can see the contrasts very well. hears and smells another thing, so don't play the comedy. Yes, I know what I'm saying because my uncle, a retired forester, spent his whole life in the forest and I went with him to the forest. birds do not flee like other species in nature. 800mm is not required for birds.
you buy a telephoto lens for its large aperture. and are very good glass and coatings. with an aperture of 6.3 you mainly create a restless background, and that is the last thing you want as a wildlife forographer.
This sounds very much like a commercial, not authentic video, with all the super slick comments.

@@TomMasonPhoto I used to shoot Nikon, this is making me count the cost to come back. It’s unreal how much Nikon has rebounded in my mind
It’s a little crazy how Canon just welds adapters onto their old lenses and while Nikon are doing all new built for mirrorless lenses.

I watched a video where Steve Perry discussed this. When he shot without the lens hood, the images were clear. No heat wave distortion.
@@sharonhaasbroek7464 interesting, I'll have to try that.
What was the other telephoto you were using? Based upon the front-to-back orientation of the foot, I'm guessing it's an older 400 2.8.

Can Nikon give you the 400mm F2.8 + 1.4TC for testing? 😃😂

Thank you Tom for your excellent review, I have preordered the 800mm and I'm second in the queue at my local camera shop, can't wait to get it!
Nice one! Enjoy it out in the field!
Why can't a lens with this length beat the Nikon P1000 3000mm focal length?
Because the P1000 has a tiny sensor and so the equivalent lens is far longer in focal length than for an FX camera!
Awesome video Tom. Really enjoyed the results and impressions you shared from this beautiful place.
