- Here's a short video detailing some helpful hints for all you Spyderco Sharpmaker users across the knife universe. I'll deal specifically with sharpening recurves and techniques to use to finish with nice, pointed tips on your knife blades. Hope this helps!

This makes perfect sense. Thanks for making this video. Now I can sharpen my Benchmade North Fork.
Why would you title this to include recurves and not have a recurve knife to work with?
Just to mess with you 😉. But really, the blade style isn't important to show the technique
yes click bait, enjoy
@@TheApostleP But you do say you have recurved blades, but they were already sharp. Well, if you demonstrate on them, wouldn't they be even sharper? I fail to see how thats a bad thing. Your content was pretty good, but....IMO the organisation could be a little better.
Thanks for the tips! I'm about to sharpen my brother's ZT 0200. I figured something like this would help.
Good video, thanks.
Thanks for the tips brother Rob!. Another thing to mention, which you kind of touched on, is that since this system is not very good for reprofiling, if someone only has this one tool for sharpening, they will want to touch up often, so as not to let their blade get too messed up. I really wish I would have known not to draw the blade completely off the rods of my Lansky Crock stix, I blunted the tip on my Benchmade Grip so bad, that it is just now getting back to normal....after over a year!
Yeah... I kind of feel sorry for my old faithful Sharpmaker, as it serves mostly in the capacity of video background these days. But I'd never get rid of it. It is great for touch-ups in a hurry, and those stones have a variety of uses beyond serrations. I've used them for stoning gun parts, lock faces, rounded knife tips and the list goes on.
I just purchased the Operator-7 from TOPS Knives, and it is my first blade with a recurve.
I'm not sure what the bevels are, but it's over a quarter inch thick at the spine.
A good friend suggested the Sharpmaker. Do you believe that it'll be the best option for this knife?
Good advice. I don't use my SM much anymore either obviously... except for touchups and serrated blades (of which I only have a few). It is definitely a high quality system though. Highly recommend it for anyone looking to just keep their knives sharp.
Very interesting. A friend has a sharpmaker and I seen a long time ago that it's not any good for re profiling.
Or, for a re-curve, perhaps the cheap Lansky Turn Box with it's cylindrical sharpening rods would work?
Thanks, brother :)
More Spyderco tips would be great
so, i did screw up my tip prior to this video. any thoughts on getting it back?
nice tip.
Looking at vids to learn how to sharpen my recuurve. I have seen 3 opinions now - which is right? Opinion 1) Sharpen from hilt to belly or tip is what most do, 2) Never sharpen from hilt to belly or tip because that can damage the belly - much better to sharpen from bottom of belly to hilt then sharpen the tip and 3) one guy says it doesn't matter what direction you sharpen a recurve as long as you work to minimize the burrs. I see you do the first opinion. What do you think of the second opinion that it can dull the belly if sharpened from hilt to tip? Which do you think is most correct and why? Thank you.
Will do, my friend. If you have any specific questions, don't hesitate to ask. I've probably had to learn the answer the hard way somewhere along the line... LOL!
No problem, Will. Sorry it took so long...
with round rods you just do it like a normal knife correct? for a recurve
same thing i was thinking... i don't understand why more people aren't asking this...
ok obviously i'm an amateur, but for the life of me i can't understand why using a simple circular ceramic rod would not be sufficient for sharpening a curved blade? or just the edge of the triangle for that matter?.... someone please explain this to me if you have a moment...
Somebody skipped leg day, LOL. Seriously though, great and informative video.
Somebody missed workout day all together.
Thanks, Cole :). Pun intended, I'm sure :)
What is the best way to sharpen a tip?
Sounds like another video! But the short answer is to never let the tip "snap" off the edge of the stone, and make sure each stroke ends softly at the tip with the tip touching the stone.
You sound EXACTLY like Kurt Russel.
Haha I was just going to say that!!
Is there a reason for recurve blades other than to look cool?
yeah, man, for tip cutting. A wharncliffe or recurve will give nasty tip cuts.
How can you do a video on a re curve knife and not have a re curve knife? Makes no sense to me. It's like showing me how to clean a windshield using a piece of cardboard instead of glass. Waste of my time.
Bob C Must be over your head, Bob.
Nice video but come on, at least use a recurve knife for a recurve knife sharpening video
