We are going to make a new video (update to this one) so it can help others about what we know of this product plus better video quality! At the time we shot this we were still learning how to edit the videos with software. Thank you!
I've worked with Earl back in the NASA Shuttle days and let me tell you something about this guy he is truly a super human he is utterly an amazing guy, a true artist in his profession, I've seen a project he did turning a 4 door 57 Belair into a 2 door by himself and the car was utterly flawless. Earl and Christy are truly beutiful people. I'm certain you won't find a more honest person then Earl. God bless
I've used Ospho (it has several other brand names, too like Rust Cure) for years; something that video didn't cover was that once the rust is converted, it makes an unbelievable bond for paint. I've even taken sandblasted metal and allowed it to get just a hint of surface rust so the Ospho would convert it and give my primer/paint an incredible bond, far better than bare steel. He called the converted rust an inert material: it is actually a primer. Great stuff!
Im planning on fixing the roof of my jeep ina few weeks. Do you have any tips for using this product? Ive read that some people say to use a hose and wash it off before you paint. What is the best procedure to use this?
@@bdr5150 Well I wouldn't worry too much about it, I Ospho'd a very rusty roof on a 63 Skylark (without using water) and the paint is holding up great years later. I like to use plenty of primer. One thing is do not get Ospho on glass or even paint really but it will haze up your windows...Sand er down, Ospho, maybe a little more sanding, then primer it up.
Thank you. Nice to learn your process. Thanks for not having a guitar or drum beat too. I'd rather listen to the fan and someone who actually does the work speak normally and show what has worked for them.
Sorry that I was not able to flip the video in a couple sections.. I was learning how to do the software at this time of the shoot... I should do another one updated.... Thank you!
Thank you. You appear to be a good, honest and humble guy. It was very informative. I am actually de-rusting the trailing arms on a 1969 VW. Been working on this buggy for 30 years off and on. I drive it because a car is a car. It is not a coin in my collection.
Good rant! I thought you were going to say something against Ospho, and I wanted to know what it was! I'm into my first project car after a 40 year break, and it's a different world. My car has (had) significant rust issues, and making sure what I do doesn't rust through five years after I paint it is high on my list. Glad you have a high opinion of Ospho, have been using it for a couple of years now. As for your rant, yeah, we are all in this together and the time I spend working on my project is precious. I work two jobs, have family and other responsibilities. Having good information and developing my skills is the primary reason I come to UA-cam. I don't care about personalities. I care about content.
Love me some Ospho too, good stuff. I wish I could afford someone of your caliber to paint my 36, you sir have passion for what you do, Kudos. Stay Safe during this insanity.
I found your video very informative- I also realize the extra effort needed to further your rust issues; I when ever possible treat the backside as well as the front side- just add,s a few minutes to the protection process; thank you, PJP
It's taking me a long time with research thank you for your video here's my question I have a 1995 Chevrolet pickup frame I'm going to have it sandblasted down to bare metal if I use this product can I just leave it on there and paint over it or do I need to wipe it down with paint thinner help me out
Thanks for the video, I’m wondering how to deal with rust that’s coming out from the inside of the panels? Like bottoms of doors rocker panels ect. still solid metal no holes yet... can you treat the insides in this fashion by spaying it in? Or? I’m at a loss on this scenario
The ONLY acid cleaners SPI recommends is Opsho, PPG and DuPont metal preps as long as their instructions are followed to a tee. Use any other system you want, just do us a favor and use no SPI over them. There can be NO shortcuts for good results. Ospho, is a great product for automotive if used right, we give scare warnings because we want people to call so we can make sure they know how to neutralize it, so no problems will arise. Only one way to use and here it is: Use as needed and apply as many times as needed to get the spot Clean let dry and leave for months if you want, don’t matter. To neutralize the Ospho MUST be wet, so if dry, re-wet with itself and let set one or two minutes and with a clean rag and water, wipe off like washing the car and then dry. Next, then da car with 80 grit, clean with 700-1 wax and grease remover, let set an hour and coat with an epoxy. Notes of interest (maybe) If you try and sand dry film off you will lose 40-60% adhesion (per adhesion tester as some will embed itself in metal and amount depends on how long the Ospho has been on panel as we do know acid films degrade with time but due to many factors we cannot pinpoint a time frame. Just wondering why you do not neutralize the acid before DA?
Thanks for the comment, i really appreciate all the comments on neutralizing, it seems like a staightforward process, but yet i have found it explained so many ways------ truly out of curiousity, not a sarcastic question, not calling into question the efficacy of your process, but; Could running a DA with 80 grit remove most of the beneficial adhesion effects of the ospho? Also is there a point where, the metal is clean enough, and just a smooth DA finish is considered sufficient prep, and you just ditch the ospho?
That's a super important question that was not covered in the video! Many primer manufacturers state that if you paint over without neutralizing, even if you re-sand by DA, you can have delamination problems. You shouldn't let this dry on the metal without neutralizing. I suggest people hit the SPI forum and read the very good explanation about this from their tech people.
@@mback12000 well some epoxy primer such as SPI doesn't work on acid treated metal. Some other primer love acid treated metal such as Ospho, like kirker epoxy primer. Honestly I haven't noticed much different between the SPI and Kirker and both sand nicely.

Some people have told me to re-wet the car with ospho to reactivate it. let it sit for 15 minutes wet, then wash it off with soapy water and air dry before painting epoxy primer. Thanks I would appreciate any input you have
Ospho has to be neutralized with some epoxy primer such as SPI epoxy primer.Won't adhere to Ospho treated metal until you rewet it with Ospho and wash it off with water. That is how you neutralize Ospho. On the other hand, Kirker epoxy primer works better if metal is treated with Ospho and not neutralized. I myself treated my VW with Ospho and going to use Kirker epoxy primer with it.
What am I missing here, as to why to even use Ospho? Why not just grind away all the rust and use filler, which you'll have to do either way in most cases? My best guess is areas where the remaining metal is very thin, so you can't just grind it down, but I don't get it. This isn't criticism, simply ignorance, but can't find answers.

My best guess is areas where the remaining metal is very thin, so you can't just grind it down, but I don't get it. This isn't criticism, simply ignorance, but can't find answers.
some times we may not have the option to blast..... this was very minor and will never come back to bite us... its a good alt if you cannot get all the rust out. we did blast it prior to this with a speed blaster but it doesnt remove everything....
@@ES4406 Thanks for the response. I'm giving it a shot on my project in areas where I can't get all the rust out, like you said. I thought I'd be able to get it 100% out and down to metal everywhere but that proved to be unrealistic :D
Good work. I use Ospho also. I just subscribed! Tom
Thank you! I will try and get the videos better too.
I literally hate Ospho!
It ruined every fencepost I used it on, on my beautiful new cedar fence.
Nice job
We're showing a mirror image of all the pictures you're showing of the products did you know that I don't know what you're doing but it's showing it backwards like I was taking a picture through a mirror can you please correct your dip mix videos
I am going to do a new video updated
.. YT wont let me fix the video. I was learning wditing software when we did that.
LoL! My cat piss!
Cover the concrete under your car with plastic sheeting. Ospho eats concrete. I know from experience.
