I'm hoping you figured it out by now but you can feed the horse apples and gold carrots but you were trying to feed it while your hunger bar was down, so it just tried to feed you. Your hunger bar has to be full to be able to feed any animal.
imagine if the fairy mod had fae food mode where normal food like rotten flesh or cookie so having to change normal food to fae involves fae ingredients to gain fairy foods with effects like a weak potion effect or just fill the hunger.
