The Olivia Rodrigo hate train is so ridiculous. Her albums and the singles off of the albums are breaking records yet you can see misogynistic people are always trying to downplay her success and discredit her. She's the most groundbreaking and important artists of this new generation, and she is more than deserving of winning album of the year.
Sadly people love to discredit and belittle young talented women who are great at what they do. They feel the need to invalidate them and "put them in their place". It's very weird.
I think it's unfair to say she's the most groundbreaking or important artist of her generation, she's just the one lucky enough to get this sort of global recognition
So glad you mentioned her humor! My fav line of hers if at the end of Ballad of a Homeschooled Girl, “can’t think of a third line” it’s so good. It acknowledges the songs formula in a fun way that doesn’t disrupt the song, it makes it seem like she’s really feeling these things as she’s singing them, and it’s a line you can only do once. You can reuse metaphors effectively but a good joke is great once.
I feel like Olivia citing Jack White, Fiona Apple, Sheryl Crow and St Vincent as major influences instead of Taylor Swift for this album was a very smart decision because well, we saw how that worked during sour... 🤔
The fact that mainstream public isn’t able to evaluate the complexity and intricacy of Guts is the proof that this album is extraordinary and definitely deserves the recognition of artistic excellence ✨
I'd actually be quite disappointed if Taylor wins album of the year... I love Midnights as an album but I don't think it's a body of work that deserves AOTY compared to the rest of her discography or to the three other big frontrunners, it would just be winning bc she's the biggest musician in the world right now and the eras tour has been incredible.
Don’t think Taylor will get another AOTY for a whileeeee. Winning 3 in 3 different decades at like 32 is already so insane. I think it would be strange if it did go to Taylor. Hope she gets SOTY though!
I’m not a Swiftie but I’ve largely heard from those who are that Midnights does not stand up to prior albums. I think if Taylor won it would be a show of popularity rather than actually deserving
Idk why whenever I heard the lyric “another piece of plastic I could just throw away” I always pictured her talking about an award show trophy. Like when she wanted it so much and now she has it and it could feel kinda empty after experiencing some hardships from the industry
I love Taylor and genuinely love Midnights, but I think Guts deserves to win. Even if the culture doesn’t fully shift along with Olivia, that would say more about the tastelessness of the culture than about her. I grew up on rock music and she is bringing it into pop in a way that really hasn’t been done before. Avril and Gwen still felt so separate from true rock music in a way that Olivia’s work isn’t, I think she captures at least some of the essence and artistry of the genre
When I saw the nominations my first thought was that GUTS definitely deserves the prize. I might be a passionate swifty who spent 2000 euro on Eras tour tickets; but GUTS just feels more original; the vocals are also better and I just ended up enjoying it more. Regardless, with the Taylor Swift effect being so strong now, I don’t believe that it will win. I am hoping that Vampire will become song of the year at least but with Antihero and Dua Lipa’s Dance the night, I am not so sure it will. I am still hoping that Olivia will get her recognition and prove me wrong
Great video as always!! The GUTS album is in almost every ranking of the best albums of the year according to various publications, magazines, critics and journalists. And we are here for it! I really love this album 💜
I wasn’t that into Sour but Guts definitely turned me into an Olivia Rodrigo fan (livvie?). So I’m going to rant about why Guts is definitely album of the year for me lol. I love both the humour and emotion in her music, and sonically I feel like she really stands out from the other pop girlies that are around right now. As a teen girl entering adulthood, songs like making the bed and teenage dream articulate what it feels like so damn well. I feel like the whole album was just so solid it’ll be insane if she doesn’t win something. But alas, I am not a judge I am but a girl.
I'm 37 and I really like this album. I was a couple of years younger than Olivia when White stripes released "Elephant" and I listened to that A LOT. So when I heard "Bad idea, right?" and "All American Bitch", I instantly recognized the vibes and was happy that they're back. I also listened to Limp Bizkit, Bloodhound gang, Gorillaz, Eminem, Moby... all on pirated CDs😂
@@johnm.castillo3163 yes! But what are you supposed to do as a poor ex-USSR teenager? I got mine from Russia. Someone went for a trip to a city just behind the border and you could place orders. But it all works out... now I stream them on Spotify in the hopes of paying them back😂
Yes please to boy genius - the record! Also, I love that you can appreciate taylor & olivia for their similarities, strengths, and differences. There is room for us to love both! I'm so sick of all the hate so called "swifies" bring to other artists. It seems like poor Maisie Peters has been attacked by the hate train recently, I'm so over it!
olivia is definitely one of the only new pop girlies that is doing alot heavy lifting for the current state of pop music. She can sing, has a personality, and she actually puts creativity into her music
Really loved the Making the Bed breakdown. I am a grown 28 year old woman and a mom and I sometimes feel a bit too old for her music but it feels weirdly nostalgic and I think she’s so talented. Anyway I listened to that song for the first time with the lyrics up in the car line waiting for my daughter to get out of school. Let me tell you I started sobbing the most satisfying cry that I guess has been sitting inside my body since I was a teenager. It’s just so well written and relatable and I appreciated it a lot. Every now and then I’ll come across a piece of art that gives me a strong and immediate emotional reaction like that and it really sticks with me. I can’t wait to see what else she makes.
I'm also 28 and Making The Bed really resonated with me. I love Olivia's music and i don't think there's an age limit for liking certain type of music. Music is universal and has no boundaries...therefore im really excited to see what Olivia releases in the future.
I would love to see Olivia win. I’m honestly torn between her and Lana because while I think Ocean Blvd is timeless, it certainly isn’t as flawless front to back and GUTS is. GUTS is expansive yet concise, it’s diverse yet cohesive, fresh yet classic, and it’s mature while capturing an essence of youth that hasn’t been mainstream since Lorde in my opinion
People say Lana del rey deserves it because she hasn't gotten an Grammy even though she has sm amazing work put out. And I also think Lana getting a Grammy is long overdue but I feel like she should have gotten that Grammy with nfr. I hope guts win
My case for Lana has more to do with Ocean Blvd’s overarching theme being legacy, what we leave behind as well as embarking on new frontiers, and for that to be AOTY would be so inspiring and heartwarming
Sorry. Don’t love it other than that really incredible song with Father John Misty which was one of my most played songs of 2023. I much prefer Chemtrails.
This album is truly phenomenal and I’m so glad you’re speaking on it!! The ending of Teenage Dream left me absolutely speechless and I think that part alone solidified it as AOTY for me. Also, Pretty Isn’t Pretty, and All-American B*tch are some of her best songs and I really hope the academy sees that and lets her sweep this years Grammys🙏🙏
I agree! I love how theatrical and melodramatic it all is, yet still maintains enough depth and emotional gravitas that really does capture the voice of that generation.
My daughter and I have floor tickets to see her in March and we can’t wait!!! Her style in this album reminded me instantly of The Breeders (I’m old lol) and I loved them growing up. I totally agree this one should be seriously considered if not win the whole damn thing. Great video and commentary as usual ❤
I really like GUTS and think we’ll look back at it as a classic - but I don’t think it’s going to edge it for the win. I don’t the hype stayed up enough, and I haven’t seen much of a campaign - but there definitely could be stuff behind the scenes!
she did a lot of promo=campaigning during december and will probably do more in the coming weeks leading to the grammys even possibly release the deluxe version which makes sense leading to her tour
I have seen her doing a lot of live performances after the release of Guts, she has upload so many live versions in her channel. I don't know honestly if that counts as campaign, but she has been promoting her album and performances a lot.
Though I am a huge Olivia fan and rooting for her, I would be equally happy if SOS won because the Grammys have done Black women dirty so consistently and SZA deserves to win
Honestly, I agree with you. GUTS did well and I do see her winning some awards but SZA’s album was 10x better. I feel like SZA gets underestimated as a writer. Her album from start to finish was so complete. I’m tired of people underestimating black and brown artists in the industry specifically for awards like the Grammy’s.
I see Alanis’ influence in the Get Him Back video as well. It reminded me of Ironic with the different versions of her in the car. As much as I love Taylor, I do think Olivia deserves album of the year.
Olivia Rodrigo is the artist I wish I had. There's a lot that resonates with me and with other Filipinos. This is just my interpretation, but a lot of the lyrics hit different when thinking about Filipino-American culture.
Her album’s theme is pretty general. I don’t know if there’s really any hint of Filipino in that. Please don’t make this a race thing. The thing that sets Olivia from other Filipino blooded artist is she doesnt play the race thing or take advantage of the filipino pride bait style of marketing. She just creates her art and let it speak for itself.
@@kaliforniaklasswho I agree with you in the sense that she doesn’t really specify anything with her Filipino side besides maybe in lacy where she is jealous of not being fully white and blond (but even in that song she is just singing about being jealous of some girl). On the contrary, in AAB, she’s says she tries to be the all perfect American woman but can’t fit into all the expectations placed on her. If anything it seems like she sees herself as an American woman. I mean she’s half white and grew up in the suburbs so it makes sense. The themes of her albums have been discussed by other women so it’s universal. However, I disagree where you said other people “play the race card” when they are just speaking from their experiences. There is nothing wrong for bipoc artists to express their feelings through their music even if it relates to their race.
@@kaliforniaklasswho i mean the commentor just pointed out a reference to Philippine culture? having subtle references to the culture you’ve lived your entire life in isn’t playing any card ? it’s writing what you know
I totally think Olivia should win aoty and deserves it the most because her album is hit after hit. I'm scared tho because she is up against very power fanbases that can make her spiral out. She is up against people who have been in the industry for a decade while she's only been in it for 3 years.
I love this approach! Talking about the album in it's own right without comparing it to the other nominees. This was so much more interesting, learning about the writing process and Olivias mindset without comparision.
I loved this analysis. I am 1 year younger than Olivia and i feel like she speaks to me and my friends SO much. Ballad of a homeschooled girl, teenage dream, pretty isn't pretty - these are songs I had HOPED that someone would right so I could sing how I feel. Even the songs I personaly don't relate to I can put myself in Olivia's shoes and I just KNOW that I would feel the same way she does. I feel like she's one of the few artists in the mainstream who rights songs about being jealous, petty, awkward and I'm so grateful for it. I really look forward to see what she's gonna do next, I see a lot of people saying they have a similar age as Taylor and feel like they grew up with her, and I think I'll have that with Olivia - she literally released teenage dream THE DAY of my 19th birthday!!! That's cousin right there 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻
I don’t know what will happen if Olivia wins album of the year with Taylor in the audience… I’m not ready for what might come 😂 Edit: It was a rhetorical question. Judging by the comments below one can tell the reaction will be strong… It’s not going to go unnoticed, that’s for sure… Public has a lot to say about the subject 😂 I don’t take the whole situation seriously anyway ))
@@Werd24 Fr, just because people aren’t close friends doesn’t mean they have to be enemies. Like sure, the relationship between them might be a little awkward but that doesn’t equate to hate.
What could possibly happen? A fistfight? Taylor probably loves her and thinks the album is great. She’s also probably well aware that Midnights isn’t going to win.
Major agree. I love midnights and tay but it is far from her best work which is saying a lot since her songwriting is always elite but she's done stuff like that before with 1989 (pop Bible not being touched), reputation and lover. Guts was excellent and punched me in the face. The lyricism artistry etc it IS EVERYTHING
love, love, LOVE guts and i think my top 3 that i'd be so thrilled if any of them won AOTY would be guts, sos, and the record. there are some INCREDIBLE contenders this year and i'd be happy if ocean blvd won too, though i think nfr was a more deserving album to win back when it was released. if midnights won i wouldn't be surprised but (saying this as a swiftie) i really hope it doesn't, i want so much for olivia, sza, or boygenius to get AOTY as i think their albums were much...MORE, for lack of a better word. the record made me cry on multiple re-listens and it was a fucking awesome debut album for the trio, GUTS is an amazing sophomore album that had a million beautiful moments, and SOS was a long-awaited masterpiece that absolutely didn't disappoint what a lot of fans were waiting for, i love the way she genre-bends within the album. all this to say i really hope tay fans sit back and remember that other people can make good (better, question mark?) music also :) i'm excited for the grammys and good video as always, zach!
I love GUTS for me personally it was album of the year however i can see SZA taking it with SOS and I’ll still be v happy. Guts for me has no filler and every song deserves to be on the album. I love the underlying themes of the album and everything feels v cohesive. however, i feel like promo wasn’t hyped too much which is fine so the longevity wasn’t there for the general public but she doesn’t gaf about charts so it all works out. I agree with you how GUTS seems like a continuation of SOUR which was smart, even with the color/branding, she went from solely purple in SOUR and now uses purple with hints of reds for GUTS. I think the route she took was a great choice, maybe she lost some people looking for the same ballads in SOUR, but who cares we move. She’s extremely talented and i can see her being our next alt pop star similar to the space Lana del Rey occupies between alt and pop. i believe this album is a classic and can most definitely see in 20 years time teenagers of the future revisiting it thinking they wished they lived through the 2020s.
@kaliforniaklasswho what critics? Honestly all I see are nods to SOS and The Record. SZA I can see but I rlly do not get boygenius but they are exactly the kind of thing the grammys love. I have a feeling we are all going to be disappointed
Honestly considering the amount it work that Olivia put into GUTS it would be a crime Fiordland it not to win, guts feels like a really heartfelt project like Olivia out everything she could into that album, I think while it probably won’t win, it should speaking as both a Taylor and Lana Stan, although ocean blvd may also be just as deserving
@tomidrac9719 Lacy definitely should stay, it's like a top 3 on the album for me, but I agree the grudge kinda drags, and I would've preferred obsessed especially since she didn't release it on CD just vinyl
So as someone who ended up having thid as their most played album of 2023, I feel no matter which tracks resonate, she played into her strength as an Actor to convey the stories on the album, which worked well. Personally, Bad Idea Right is my highlight.
My mum, my dad and I all loved Vampire and we rarely have the same opinions when it comes to music, and even more rarely with contemporary music. This alone tells you something!
As a livies, I really wish the world could see how creative and fun of an artist Olivia is and I'm really happy that she has grown both as a singer/ songwriter and also as a young woman (yes I'm 15 sorry for that). But in my opinion, SZA's SOS is worthy of AOTY this year. All of the songs were well-produced, thoughtful, and interesting in their own way. You get literally a song about planning to kill your ex and his new girl to wishing you were someone special in their life. The sound also ranges from pop/ more focused in the melody in her voice in Kill Bill to RnB/ Soul sound in "Used" or deeper lyricism in "Ghost in the Machine" which, IMO is the best song in the album in both the lyrics and how the song was produced, also Phoebe's feature compliment it so well. In general, the album just feels connected and thoughtful, you can feel the love and passion she put into this sophomore album. not only that I'm a livies, but I'd also consider myself a swiftie (ofc lol) and I definitely disagree with how SZA and her team acted when anti-hero and kill bill were competing to get the #1 spot in some chart in 2022 but nevertheless, I think we can separate the artist and the art here and give SOS the album the recognition it deserves.
we need the boygenius video.... that album is my AOTY by far and honestly favorites of all time. their ability to capture emotion in every aspect of their songs - from the melodies, instruments, lyrics is unmatched. those 3 are so talented and I hope they get recognized for it this year
I really like Olivia because she's really unique. She's not just pop she's pop rock but she also has lots of ballads. Very diverse. I liked some of the distorted/synthy/ unique instrumentation on sour more but I really like how live focused guts is. I also think that her keeping guts and sour similar in vibes with the purple and all is really genius. Taylors eras is a whole thing so doing something different by sticking to the same aesthetic across 2 albums was nice change of pace
she may be overdue but tunnel isn't the most deserving this year and i hateeeee the idea of just throwing awards to artists/actors just cuz they're overdue on it give it to them when it's well deserved no matter their age !! stop dragging it & i really hope they don't treat olivia like "oh she's young, she'll have more chances"
i love the video for vampire because the song itself can be interpreted as not just about a romantic relationship but how the entertainment industry has treated her so far. there's even an audience of her peers sitting in the crowd, acting concerned at first and then cheering like nothing happened. it can show how dehumanizing the entertainment industry can be and how they can treat you like a spectacle or caged animal to control with the bodyguards chasing her. the beginning also looks like a scene from twilight with the mist and nature at nighttime, and olivia is a big twilight stan
I think her next album will win! This is that essential bridge between sour and what comes next I think. I also think that Lana or SZA will get it this time around.
I love olivia i remember when she was on bizaardvark and sang comedy songs and now shes singing songs like lacy teenage dream etc. which are so movig.she got treated the way she deserved in high school musical...and now shes winning grammys im so happy for her💜✨
@@aliaaaafrher handbag skit on SNL really reminded me of her bizaardvark skits but I went to the comments section no one was talking about it finally someone has watched bizaardvark
i think olivia is the front runner of this group for AOTY. she took a different approach to this album sonically, made it cohesive and short, and let raw emotion take control rather than catchy melodies. she’s graciously accepted all of the good that has come from this album and her tiny desk performance of GUTS is one of her best to date. though i can see taylor or SZA winning too, i believe Olivia deserves the recognition for the work she put into this album. I’m afraid that if she loses, she may get discouraged and lose her steady rise and respect she’s gained thus far (aka taylor losing AOTY for red/reputation and making her go batshit insane and hyper focused on making something catered towards the academy).
I know that Jack Antonoff is probably gonna win Producer Of The Year (having worked in 2 of the AOTY nominees) but i would LOVE if it went to Dan Nigro. I was so happily surprised with his production on GUTS... sometimes i just like to put on the songs and focus on his production (which i don't do very often as a lyric-based listener), i felt like with this album i also saw him grow as a producer just like Olivia as an artist. I also loved his work with Chappell Ronan and Caroline Polachek. He really is bringing something different to the industry right now.
This was such a well researched and thoughtful video. Thanks! Guts is such a great album. I would love to see your thoughts on the Boygenius album as well. :)
At 23 I am so by no means old but GUTS spoke to me on a way more meaningful level than SOUR ever did. Truly a standout album that I will no doubt listen to for many years to come. I discovered last year that All Americian Bitch is actually so therapeutic to scream to for anyone needing an emotional release lol. Thanks for championing this young female star Zach. I am so tired of being associated with swifties who hate on her, it's not a good look honestly & makes me not want to be part of this fandom sometimes tbh. Snakes only pls
honestly i feel bad for olivia, if she wins any grammy people are gonna lose their shit especially if she wins anything over midnights, and while yes midnights is a good album and broke alot of records, guts feels like a more full and exciting album, there were highs lows, tears, headbanging etc whereas with midnights yes there was that but its lost any excitment due to how many copies and special editions taylor rolled out...im forever rooting for my girl olivia (also hope sza and lana win atleast something)
I personally prefer midnights as well as sos as full fledge albums over guts I think what ruined midnights was like you said Taylor overdoing it with the special editions and personally speaking, making her tour more of the eras tour as suppose to making the album being centered around midnights, but albums alone I much prefer midnights than guts I think guts did a good job but still struggled to fully identify with what it was trying to trying to fully say where as midnights I think the lyricism and production was a unique perspective of what it’s like to being breaking up with someone and going into the rabbit hole of your psyche where how this romantic relationship you thought was gonna be the end of all be all into marriage for you says alot about your previous relationships and you as a person
People are not going to lose their shit. Swifties will lose their shit but they are just a corner of the internet that the real world doesn’t care about.
I whole heartedly agree with you about it being the album of the year. However, do I think it will win? Not really, no. It is the album of the year to me regardless of whether or not she'll win, but I don't think the grammy's are going to give her this. Even though I do believe she deserves it. But at the same time, I also don't really care that much if it'll win or not. It's AOTY to me anyway.
❤ “THE RECORD” + “THE REST “ ❤ pleeeeeezzeee I’ve never felt so emotionally invested in so many of the nominations for one award! I am literally obsessed with at least 5 or 6 of this years AOTY nominees. I will have The Record on repeat for the rest of my life, but omg I completely fell in love with Guts immediately on first listen. And this was a wonderfully insightful take on why it could win!
Your video essays are always some of my favorites! If you are hoping to make more Grammy month content, I'd love to hear from you regarding fashion. Because the Grammy's are one of the biggest award shows of the year, we always get a very... interesting set of red carpet looks.
Ive seen people give the cristism that guts has higher highs but lower lows than sour. When I believe it is the opposite. GUTS (to me) is back to back bangers. I also think GUTS is more cohesive than Sour.
It’s a great album and it may well deserve it. But I’m betting that boygenius will win. They are more “serious” industry darlings and it’s the kind of album the Grammy voters love.
Also the AOTY is NOT based on commercial success or appeal. It’s based on artistic merit as decided by a bunch of music industry veterans and professionals. That’s the reason why there are what you call “curve balls”. Beck’s Morning Phase is truly an incredible album but it’s not a radio album. It deserved every award.
I think teenage dream is so relatable. Especially as someone who has been getting decent grades or even improving grades (that people consider really good), it puts so much pressure on me to keep it up. I always feel like if I don’t keep it up, or even let it drop just a little, people around me would be really disappointed. Every time I do I test, I have this crippling fear that I haven’t done enough or I have just been lucking out and that I would just slip all the way down.
Stoooop I was pickpocketed in Barcelona almost 2 weeks ago and I have been bombed with reels that mention it and now you too T-T I can relate with your uncle's pain, I hope that he was able to complete/solve without problems every procedure that arises from this situation:(
Guts is honestly my guilty pleasure album, especially when it comes to the up-beat songs such as ''get him back!'' and ''bad idea right?''. Like, the beat is really catchy even though the lyrics are comedish and not oh so emotional and ''intellectual''. But you can notice with other Olivia's work that she does this on purpose and that she wrote such songs exactly in that mannerism so yeah sometimes you shouldn't think too much and just listen to a teen girl wanting to key his car, make him lunch, break his heart and be the one to stitch it up
How this young girl found a way to express what is happening in my soul in the grudge is just amazing. Surprised me! I hated the album at first but it grows on you!
the idea is she's already a legend, they'll let all the other winners get their 15 minutes. she will get an album of the year eventually, along with a lifetime achievement. She's done so much not just for us fans, but for the industry, and for such an incredibly consistent career.
Yes to Greenlight & Vampire comparison. I think the genre uniting them is cabaret (as you said, theater kid energy) and i think she drew on Dresden Dolls here quite a bit too.
I only recently listened to Olivia's music, after I heard it on the hunger games film. I knew of her but apart from a couple of songs I didn't like to fall into the hype bubble, but I really did find "Guts", to be surprisingly entertaining and catchy. I still have only really heard, "Brutal", and "Driver's license", so I will check up on Sour. Back to Guts though, "Logical", "The Grudge", and "Lacy", really got me emotional. And that's coming from an old person. I hope she wins but she's up against Taylor, Lana, so I don't know.
Carteristas operate on the professional level here in Barcelona, lol. I didn't get tickets for Olivia (yet?) but I'm so excited you are coming over! Hope you organize any kind of meeting or I'll be forced to stalk you and ask you out for drinks!
yesss zac, thank you for such a good video! i would be really interested to see a video on who you think are going to become the next generation of big pop stars moving in the future, alongside olivia rodrigo, and why you think so!
loved your perspective on this, especially as someone who doesn't love guts. to me personally all american bitch is the only song i truly love on that album, even though there are other songs i enjoy listening to (love is embarrassing, ballad of a homeschooled girl,...) i see so much potential in olivia though, she's obviously a very skilled writer who only seeks to improve herself even further (a quality most artists don't really seem to have). she always says in interviews that all american bitch is her favourite song on the album which makes me excited for the future because that song is amazing for me personally her taylor-style songs work a lot better than her avril-style songs because, to me, they just sound a lot more mature. i'm not sure if it's purely the writing or the production too but songs like brutal and bad idea right really remind me of disney soundtracks, which isn't even to say that they're horrible songs because i genuinely still enjoy listening to some hannah montana songs i loved when i was like 8 years old but they're just not the types of songs i would put out if i was her i guess? i'm olivia's age and those songs just come across as very juvenile to me but she also has had a very unique life in so many ways so i don't really expect her to be relatable to me. this definitely isn't my aoty but i wouldn't be mad if she got it, i'm always rooting for olivia and want her to do well. she's so endearing it's hard for me to understand the hate she gets, especially from swifties so excited for the rest of these grammy videos, especially tunnel!!!!!! i'm so glad you've turned into a rodrigologist i adore your commentary and there is so much to say about olivia btw did you ever record a reaction or talk about your opinion on the guts "bonus" tracks?? id be so interested !!
@@cc1526they’re not on streaming unfortunately i’m pretty sure they were on vinyl only but you can find them on youtube, they’re called scared of my guitar, girl ive always been, obsessed and stranger :)
thanks for tuning in and leaving such a thoughtful comment!! I haven't actually posted any of my thoughts on the bonus tracks, if they get put on streaming I'll def do a video on it. tunnel is next week, can't wait to see your take on it too in the comments!
However cliche it may be, Vampire got me. It took me like a year to really dive into SOUR, but GUTS immediately got my full attention. I'm hoping SZA gets AOTY. but Vampire needs SOTY. "What a mesmerizing, paralyzing, fucked up little thrill...Went for me, and not her 'cause girls your age know better". I mean DAMN.
to me it definitely will come down to SOS, GUTS and Midnights and while i haven't listened to SOS, i have listened to the other 2 and i feel this sense of finality with the two of them. GUTS being the other half of SOUR and Midnights being this sort of farewell to the first end of taylor's career. They both feel very rooted in who they really are and while as a swiftie i'd love to see taylor win i truly think they both immensely deserve it!
Omg. "ATENCIÓN, CHORIZO!!" Yes, we call pickpockets or robbers "chorizos", like the food. It is a very informal/street kind of word. I just needed to pass on this crucial information 😂 If you come to Barcelona, it's also nice to learn something in catalan, even if it's just one word or greeting "Bon dia". Enjoy the city, if you have any doubt about train/subway etc do not doubt to ask!!! 🎉
I listen to GUTS all the time when coming home from school it's a great go-to album because if you want upbeat / more pop/rock sound there are those, if you want something more sad / depressing there's that too. And those are my only two requirements when listening to music after school basically. So yeah great album, I hope Olivia wins this award and lots of others because she deserves this
I’d love to see a video on Boygenius The Record!! I’ve also been trying to listen to and analyze all of the aoty nominees before Grammys and thats one that I’m curious to hear your thoughts on
I have listened to GUTS twice, ballad of a homeschooled girl and vampire are the standout tracks for me. All in all, it's a very cohesive, well written body of work, but when I put the album against some other contenders in the AOTY category it just doesn't make the top spot for me - but somehow I feel it in my guts that she'll win haha. I could definitely see her winning best pop vocal performance for vampire or best pop album though! I'm rooting for midnights 😊
I have to say, I have like no interest in pop culture and all that stuff, but I keep watching all of your videos because of how freaking talented you are in talking about that. good jobbb and greetings from Greece 🤩
I honestly think the rockists on the Academy are gonna give the award to Boygenius, but Guts also deserves it for sure. 2023 was a fantastic year for mainstream music in a lot of ways.
"GUTS" should win, because "SOUR" was unfairly snubbed last time for Jon Batiste. 😁😊 Which album made the bigger overall impact? And I think "GUTS" is even better than 'SOUR". Which is an incredible achievement for Olivia Rodrigo. "GUTS" is also the album which I've played the most, and the album that most captivated me.
SOUR was not snubbed, Jon Batiste's album was excellent. I love SOUR but in terms of quality Jon really deserved AOTY. Remember to be objective and make commentary if you've actually listened to the other nominees, because this will result in a fair opinion.
@@tammytt76 Jon Batiste is a very good musician. And I heard the album. I thought it was like what Alicia Keys does, only not as good. Look at the facts. The Recording Academy extended the qualification period that year, likely just so they could add Jon's album. Which is something they never do. And look at overall impact. "SOUR" clearly made the bigger impact. Jon's album hadn't even made the Billboard Top 40, and not many were into his music then. While Olivia's lead single was being talked about in an "SNL" sketch, even before her album was out. But, the Academy went on their perceived artistic merit. And I'm cool with that. It's their awards show. But, I still think Olivia was snubbed. "SOUR" was definitely the album of 2021. This year, if SZA or Taylor Swift take it, I'm good. Those albums actually proved themselves and got excellent reviews, and many heard them. They are actually deserving of Album Of The Year.
I really want Lana to win. Although it would be really nice for such a young woman to win aoty, I think Lana deserves to win. She has never won aoty despite having 9 incredible albums and having been in the industry for so many years now. Dykttatuob showcases Lana’s lyricism, where she opens up about her trauma and how it’s affected her perspective of life and has beautiful and elegant production.
my friend likes sour more than guts by a margin- and I'm like why? if u like drivers license, vampire is better. or jealousy, jealousy, pretty isn't pretty is better, and the list goes on. don't get me wrong, sour is a monumental album, but guts has everything sour had on a more mature level and more depth.

You can reuse metaphors effectively but a good joke is great once.
yeah I LOVE that line and it also pays homage to the DIY artists she was inspired by
I feel like Olivia citing Jack White, Fiona Apple, Sheryl Crow and St Vincent as major influences instead of Taylor Swift for this album was a very smart decision because well, we saw how that worked during sour... 🤔
She definitely learned her lesson. Smart queen

@@soaribb32Well… no!
I agree, but SOS deserves this award much more than GUTS and Midnights
this is exactly how i feel too, i feel like ocean blvd or SOS deserve it more
I’m for SOS or GUTS, can’t go wrong for AOTY.
Idk why whenever I heard the lyric “another piece of plastic I could just throw away” I always pictured her talking about an award show trophy. Like when she wanted it so much and now she has it and it could feel kinda empty after experiencing some hardships from the industry
yes I totallllly agree and see this interpretation too
I love Taylor and genuinely love Midnights, but I think Guts deserves to win. Even if the culture doesn’t fully shift along with Olivia, that would say more about the tastelessness of the culture than about her. I grew up on rock music and she is bringing it into pop in a way that really hasn’t been done before. Avril and Gwen still felt so separate from true rock music in a way that Olivia’s work isn’t, I think she captures at least some of the essence and artistry of the genre
speak on it!!!
I totally agree!
Great video as always!! The GUTS album is in almost every ranking of the best albums of the year according to various publications, magazines, critics and journalists. And we are here for it! I really love this album 💜
me too!!
How do you feel right now after the big snubbed of Guts?
I also listened to Limp Bizkit, Bloodhound gang, Gorillaz, Eminem, Moby... all on pirated CDs😂
she's a vibe curator!!
ahh yess the pirated CDs with the printed out album covers. Those completed me
@@johnm.castillo3163 yes! But what are you supposed to do as a poor ex-USSR teenager? I got mine from Russia. Someone went for a trip to a city just behind the border and you could place orders.
But it all works out... now I stream them on Spotify in the hopes of paying them back😂
Olivia grew up lovingggg the white stripes and Elephant is one of her most played albums she's said
I'm 39 and i love it. Guts does bring me back to high school a lot!
2024 is the year of comparison without competition
olivia is definitely one of the only new pop girlies that is doing alot heavy lifting for the current state of pop music.
Agreed that Lana deserved it for NFR so giving it to her for just an ok album is kind of a bummer.
@@musicfangirl7403 for real. dyktatutob has song good songs but I do not think it is her best work she has put out by any means imo.
Also, Pretty Isn’t Pretty, and All-American B*tch are some of her best songs and I really hope the academy sees that and lets her sweep this years Grammys🙏🙏
it's an incredible record why lie
'Vampire' sounds more like a musical number than a pop song to me. Like something from West Side Story.
And that's the appeal! It's so dramatic and theatrical
And that’s not a bad thing
@@mbbs6192and so did lover
Lmaoooo I get what you mean but the song sounds nothing like anything on West Side Story 😭
Great video and commentary as usual ❤
thanks for watching and ENJOY THE TOUR!!
I really like GUTS and think we’ll look back at it as a classic - but I don’t think it’s going to edge it for the win. I don’t the hype stayed up enough, and I haven’t seen much of a campaign - but there definitely could be stuff behind the scenes!
totally! it's going to age well
she did a lot of promo=campaigning during december and will probably do more in the coming weeks leading to the grammys even possibly release the deluxe version which makes sense leading to her tour
The Grammys are literally always supporting black ppl more than white
I really want SZA to take it!!!
totally! sos, tunnel, the record, and guts are all deserving entries
i know Mariah Carey, Beyonce, Alicia Keys, Mary J Bleige, Whitney Houston, Lauryn Hill.
Oh wait...
This is just my interpretation, but a lot of the lyrics hit different when thinking about Filipino-American culture.
i’d love to hear your opinion on which lyrics reflect filipino culture
*clings to this thread like it's a plate of lumpia*
She is up against people who have been in the industry for a decade while she's only been in it for 3 years.
ya if she wins it's going to be a very uncomfortable few weeks for her on social media
I love this approach! Talking about the album in it's own right without comparing it to the other nominees. This was so much more interesting, learning about the writing process and Olivias mindset without comparision.
thank you for picking up on that and watching!!
That's cousin right there 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻
I don’t know what will happen if Olivia wins album of the year with Taylor in the audience… I’m not ready for what might come 😂
Edit: It was a rhetorical question. Judging by the comments below one can tell the reaction will be strong… It’s not going to go unnoticed, that’s for sure… Public has a lot to say about the subject 😂 I don’t take the whole situation seriously anyway ))
Olivia will collect her award and Taylor will clap… And then stan Twitter will turn something positive into a toxic storm, as always.

The lyricism artistry etc it IS EVERYTHING
so true!
love, love, LOVE guts and i think my top 3 that i'd be so thrilled if any of them won AOTY would be guts, sos, and the record. there are some INCREDIBLE contenders this year and i'd be happy if ocean blvd won too, though i think nfr was a more deserving album to win back when it was released. if midnights won i wouldn't be surprised but (saying this as a swiftie) i really hope it doesn't, i want so much for olivia, sza, or boygenius to get AOTY as i think their albums were much...MORE, for lack of a better word. the record made me cry on multiple re-listens and it was a fucking awesome debut album for the trio, GUTS is an amazing sophomore album that had a million beautiful moments, and SOS was a long-awaited masterpiece that absolutely didn't disappoint what a lot of fans were waiting for, i love the way she genre-bends within the album. all this to say i really hope tay fans sit back and remember that other people can make good (better, question mark?) music also :) i'm excited for the grammys and good video as always, zach!
I feel you on this!! thanks for watching :)
100% Olivia deserves AOTY.
Taylor has been recognized to the moon and back. Let the newcomers have spotlight.

One thing a wish she should have done was included obsessed in the album instead of logical. Other the that the album was a highlight for 2023
Yess
Obsessed is fire
It is technically on the album just a secret track
instead of lacy or the grudge would have been good. logical is a stand out track on guts
This alone tells you something!
so true!

As a what? 🥴🥴🥴
we need the boygenius video.... that album is my AOTY by far and honestly favorites of all time. their ability to capture emotion in every aspect of their songs - from the melodies, instruments, lyrics is unmatched. those 3 are so talented and I hope they get recognized for it this year
super keen to do this hope I get the time :)
Taylors eras is a whole thing so doing something different by sticking to the same aesthetic across 2 albums was nice change of pace

lana is overdue but is tunnel the most deserving? I'll answer that in my video next week ....
nfr so deserved it and it would not be right if ocean blvd won and nfr never did :(
she may be overdue but tunnel isn't the most deserving this year and i hateeeee the idea of just throwing awards to artists/actors just cuz they're overdue on it give it to them when it's well deserved no matter their age !! stop dragging it & i really hope they don't treat olivia like "oh she's young, she'll have more chances"
I want GUTS to win so bad but I have a feeling there will be a bias towards midnights
yup lol
i love the video for vampire because the song itself can be interpreted as not just about a romantic relationship but how the entertainment industry has treated her so far. there's even an audience of her peers sitting in the crowd, acting concerned at first and then cheering like nothing happened. it can show how dehumanizing the entertainment industry can be and how they can treat you like a spectacle or caged animal to control with the bodyguards chasing her. the beginning also looks like a scene from twilight with the mist and nature at nighttime, and olivia is a big twilight stan
I think her next album will win! This is that essential bridge between sour and what comes next I think. I also think that Lana or SZA will get it this time around.

Such a stellar album, damn. I hope she wins, if not best of the year, at least best pop record of the year
i think olivia is the front runner of this group for AOTY. she took a different approach to this album sonically, made it cohesive and short, and let raw emotion take control rather than catchy melodies. she’s graciously accepted all of the good that has come from this album and her tiny desk performance of GUTS is one of her best to date. though i can see taylor or SZA winning too, i believe Olivia deserves the recognition for the work she put into this album. I’m afraid that if she loses, she may get discouraged and lose her steady rise and respect she’s gained thus far (aka taylor losing AOTY for red/reputation and making her go batshit insane and hyper focused on making something catered towards the academy).
I hope so! but everyone is being very vile about Olivia
The production in GUTS is amazing I also wish he wins that one. One of the first thoughts I had when listening to GUTS was wait who is producing this?
Dan also produced chapell roans album, which is great but underrated. And also carolina polacheks new album.
I honestly wasn’t in love with guts when it came out but this has made me want to revisit it and give it another shot

I agree completely

I also think GUTS is more cohesive than Sour.
guts is 100% better than sour
Love love love when you post content branching into the work of artists outside taylor! Love your channel as a whole❤ keep it up
It’s a great album and it may well deserve it.
It deserved every award.
they're grammy voter bait for sure
boygenius and olivia r my top 2 atm so ill be happy if either win lol
What a gutsy start for 2024 Zach🔥🙂 thank you for feeding us in the grammy month.
But you can notice with other Olivia's work that she does this on purpose and that she wrote such songs exactly in that mannerism so yeah sometimes you shouldn't think too much and just listen to a teen girl wanting to key his car, make him lunch, break his heart and be the one to stitch it up
doesnt need to be a guilty pleasure.......its just a pleasure......
How this young girl found a way to express what is happening in my soul in the grudge is just amazing. Surprised me! I hated the album at first but it grows on you!
Ugh. They’re never going to let Lana win. 😢
i like dykttatuob but she should've won for NFR! honestly
well lana also DGAF....
the idea is she's already a legend, they'll let all the other winners get their 15 minutes. she will get an album of the year eventually, along with a lifetime achievement. She's done so much not just for us fans, but for the industry, and for such an incredibly consistent career.
Lana also hasn't been submitting her work for nominations so that's kind of on her and I think says a lot about how little she cares.
Yes to Greenlight & Vampire comparison. I think the genre uniting them is cabaret (as you said, theater kid energy) and i think she drew on Dresden Dolls here quite a bit too.
I'm spanish and your spanish is pretty good so dont worry i firmly believe that for the barcelona concert you'll be alright
yes for the boygenius record!! honestly very curious to hear your thoughts even if they don't really have a chance of winning
you know sometimes the under dog takes it home ... Kasey musgraves is a good example!
Just here to say that I love your content, especially when you branch out and cover things outside of Taylor!
yesss zac, thank you for such a good video! i would be really interested to see a video on who you think are going to become the next generation of big pop stars moving in the future, alongside olivia rodrigo, and why you think so!
oooh great idea!! I'll add that to my list
loved your perspective on this, especially as someone who doesn't love guts. to me personally all american bitch is the only song i truly love on that album, even though there are other songs i enjoy listening to (love is embarrassing, ballad of a homeschooled girl,...)
i see so much potential in olivia though, she's obviously a very skilled writer who only seeks to improve herself even further (a quality most artists don't really seem to have). she always says in interviews that all american bitch is her favourite song on the album which makes me excited for the future because that song is amazing
for me personally her taylor-style songs work a lot better than her avril-style songs because, to me, they just sound a lot more mature. i'm not sure if it's purely the writing or the production too but songs like brutal and bad idea right really remind me of disney soundtracks, which isn't even to say that they're horrible songs because i genuinely still enjoy listening to some hannah montana songs i loved when i was like 8 years old but they're just not the types of songs i would put out if i was her i guess?
i'm olivia's age and those songs just come across as very juvenile to me but she also has had a very unique life in so many ways so i don't really expect her to be relatable to me.
this definitely isn't my aoty but i wouldn't be mad if she got it, i'm always rooting for olivia and want her to do well. she's so endearing it's hard for me to understand the hate she gets, especially from swifties
so excited for the rest of these grammy videos, especially tunnel!!!!!! i'm so glad you've turned into a rodrigologist i adore your commentary and there is so much to say about olivia
btw did you ever record a reaction or talk about your opinion on the guts "bonus" tracks?? id be so interested !!
What are the guts bonus tracks? Just went on Spotify and didn’t see anything besides the hunger games song.
@cc1526 they're only exclusive to the vinyls
“I’m so shy” - The swiftologist
Probably the most I’ve ever laughed out loud watching UA-cam.
LMAO
Vampire deserves SOTY. I know Taylor has never won it but it's such an extraordinary track. It's deeply layered and haunting
this is the award I really really think Olivia truly deserves
omg ok hahahahah thank you!!
I love you so much for doing this video ❤❤❤ forever livie 💜
Omggg I'm also seeing Olivia in Barcelona in June :) I'm from the U.S. but live here, I hope you have a great trip!!!!
Thank you so much for giving us SO many emergency videos this year!
You are so welcome!
I honestly prefer GUTS to Midnights, it feels more cohesive and less rushed
I listen to GUTS all the time when coming home from school it's a great go-to album because if you want upbeat / more pop/rock sound there are those, if you want something more sad / depressing there's that too. And those are my only two requirements when listening to music after school basically. So yeah great album, I hope Olivia wins this award and lots of others because she deserves this
I’d love to see a video on Boygenius The Record!! I’ve also been trying to listen to and analyze all of the aoty nominees before Grammys and thats one that I’m curious to hear your thoughts on
Such a great break down of a truly great album 🤩
thank you for watching!!
Would love an extra video on the record if you have the time. Great video, can’t wait for tunnel next wee
I have to say, I have like no interest in pop culture and all that stuff, but I keep watching all of your videos because of how freaking talented you are in talking about that. good jobbb and greetings from Greece 🤩
Wow, thank you!
BOTASSSS!! Incredible video as always and loved the deep dive into the grammys!
SOS 💙or GUTS 💜are my two picks - i'm so nervous and excited!!
I honestly think the rockists on the Academy are gonna give the award to Boygenius, but Guts also deserves it for sure. 2023 was a fantastic year for mainstream music in a lot of ways.
boy genius deserves too!
This is not hate to Olivia though I think guts is definitely deserving of aoty
my friend likes sour more than guts by a margin- and I'm like why? if u like drivers license, vampire is better. or jealousy, jealousy, pretty isn't pretty is better, and the list goes on. don't get me wrong, sour is a monumental album, but guts has everything sour had on a more mature level and more depth.
