I'm Ngati Porou, Tuwharetoa, but this group is one of my favourites, the other two are Hokowhitu, and Waka Huia. I'd like to see them back at the festival.

      Hey Will
Are you home? 😊 Wondering if you have a copy the 1996 finals. I performed in it and was 13 at the time. Love to show my kids who don't believe me 😂

I think there needs to be three categories of competition that groups can enter into. A tawhito category for all groups who practise traditional dance forms. A mikirapu category for groups who perform both traditional and modern and then a modern category called "o enei ra". I agree with Piihau's korero. And I agree with the other people as well.
In my opinion it is very counter productive to judge three different distinct styles in the one competition. Split them up. Like the Hawaiians did.

I thought if I may lol add my bit. Yip I agree with u, Matatini stunk hard this year lol. I felt bored as sitting thea looking at almost the same routines: running and jumping around on stage. I'm a big fan of Wakaz and yeah I'm glad they took it. Yeah although Apanui and Ruatahuna have their own distinct style of haka, which I'm the meanest fan of, I'm into the coastie styles of haka and I thought Hokowhitu may have gotten a placing in the top three!

@transgirlnz oh I loved that performance. I had all the groups on video.....but I broke it by mistake. I only have their album now...would love to know the words as well.......I only listen to it and then write down what I think they are saying....but I'm sure I'm wrong.

But that's just how MOST of us (Maori) operate, we compare ourselves to one another to see who is the best. lol. And no doubt there are many out there that agree. OK yeah "groups naturally bring out the beauty and intricacies of our reo in their own dialect". For me, some better than others, and thus the need to make a comparison. Without them the judges at matatini will be announcing 36-way-ties for 1st.

Considering Ngati Rangiwewehi didn't make it to Te Matatini, I don't think they'll be hard to beat... Wish they were there tho, since I'm Rangiwewehi. I think the teams to beat this year will be Te Matarae I O Rehu or Manaia. They were mean at the Te Arawa comp. Go my cuzzies in Nga Uri O Te Whanoa!!

Mataatua roopu have shown high standards of Kapahaka, I am a big fan roopu from those areas. To the person below, it is an understatement and an insult to impose such an idea. Waka Huia have, if not the best, two of the best tutors in Aotearoa, Ngapo and Pimia Wehi. To say such a thing is an insult to their mana. And for the record Waka Huia has maintained a place in the top 2 each year since 86, wouldn't it be fair to say apanui, tauira, opotiki, and ruatahuna have reached Waka Huia's standard?

However, Hokowhitu never. According to the placings, they came 8th equal, and furthermore they were placed so apparently because they "weren't original enough", HAHAHA, biggest joke! I'm just being biased, but from what I saw at Matatini, Hokowhitu, Apanui and Matarae I O Rehu were the three that took the cake. Good on Waka Huia though! Mean as glad for them! lol
