Ivan had my snail since he hatched he’s almost 3 now! What scared me as a first time snail owner was the head wart when they’re sexually maturing. I thought he was sick or bumped his head I was freaking out when I first saw it lol. Thank you for this video I love learning more about being a responsible pet owner
My attention was divided for a few and I don't know if you mentioned it, but I've also heard that in addition to their everyday foods you can feed them fish food flakes, soaked oats, algae pellets, and bloodworms. I've given mine fish flakes as a treat and they quite enjoy it. I've also heard that turtle food can be an acceptable source of calcium as well. They're pretty easy to please.
Thank you, this is such an excellent and comprehensive guide! I recently started keeping garden snails, and I think you covered pretty much every single topic i was unsure or wondering about :)
thank you so much, yesterday i found a really cute snail on the road and decided to bring it home, but right now it's leaving in a pretty small plastic container without any soil or whatsever so I'm in the process of doing research on how to set up it's home. Im scared it's gonna die overnight should i be worried?😢
I hope your snail lived and you found the info you needed. They really do need substrate, but for a temporary situation a plastic container is okay (so long as you keep it moist - a damp paper towel and sprinkles or misting with spring water, some food, and air holes). I hope everything worked out for you!
@@missdire well it didn't. Eventually I bought a terrarium where I put proper soil but for some reason my snail sadly decided to hybernate and never wake up. Anyway thanks for the advice
@marcolanza6706 I'm sorry to hear that. Sometimes they don't adjust well and things happen. Thank you for being such a compassionate person and doing your best for your little guy
While I was holding my snail he got unsticky and fell off! His shell cracked and it’s still hanging on by a thread but I was wondering if you had any advice besides more calcium..? He hasn’t understood what that he can eat cuttlebone yet- If you’ve got any suggestions to get him to eat that as well would be appreciated
I've heard that peat moss can be harmful to snails due to its acidity. I've heard of people using peat moss with their substrate without any issues. I guess it's personal choice and comfort. Just keep an eye out for shell damage. I think he has a video on how to sanitize soil, if you have access to regular dirt? I use a mixture of coconut coir and reptisoil. Some people use just one or the other. You can mix your worm castings with any of the above as well.
You just leave it in the enclosure and they will eat as needed 😊 Cuttlefish bone is the best option but cleaned eggshell can be used in a pinch The eggshell needs cleaned with plain water and the thin membrane needs to be removed (so it won't spoil) Cuttlefish is the better long term choice. You can find it in any bird section at the store. Get the uncolored one. The soft side should be face up (one side you can press your fingernail on and the hard side you can't) I hope that helps!
@alem7224 for eggshells I would replace maybe every couple days to avoid any spoiling (in case there's some kind of residue left) for cuttle bone just when it starts to look bad
You can also bake the egg shells first to clean and sanitize, and then crush the heck out of them. You want them powdery. Sharp egg shell edges can hurt the snails foot.
Hi, thank you for the video, I have a question: is it okay to put a very small snail ( she is still a baby ) in a big enclosure?? I was kinda scared she wont be able to find food
It should be okay. If you're worried about her finding food you can scatter feed so there will be food nearby no matter where she is. If you have bigger snails in that enclosure, make sure the babies shell is half the size or larger than the bigger snails shell. To make sure they don't accidentally crush her
Heard! This is such a good idea! I'm now planning to transfer my care guides into pdf versions for free! I have no idea how long it will take but I will comment here when this one is done for you! Thank you for the idea!!!
It can be temporarily but I would recommend using something with more calcium like cuttlefish bone. You can find it in just about any store that has bird items

Bot as long as your feeding it they only need dirt to hibernate in or lay eggs in you need breathing holes in the lid to make sure you mist the tub

I fould really animal bone from outside, can that work to for calcium?
@@idc_______ absolutely! Just look up how to clean them for animal consumption to avoid any potential nasties ❤️

I don't have easy access to pure top soil. Since I'm keeping isopods, would worm castings mixed with peat moss work?

How do I feed them egg shells or calcium in general? I didn’t understand that part 😭

I had a snail from outside but he only lived for a year and a week
Standard, common type snails typically only live for between 1-3 years. So you did pretty good if it was just a garden/gloss snail!
