- Sailing to Belgium in a Hurley 22, July 2018.
A nonstop 80nm trip from the UK to Belgium, crossing a 10 mile wide shipping lane and
a cross tide all the way. Lots of large ships to keep a watch out.

You say thanks for watching, but we say thank you for doing it , lovely to see down here in Australia. Very few short voyages with such an ending or new beginning, thank you.

@@trygvethomassen6393 and did you cross the Atlantic in 19 feet?
Nice video. I have a Hurley 22, recent to sailing, after watching various music vids I realised I could be watching this type of vid and broadening my sailing horizons. Will continue o do so. Thanks again for the video.
Thanks Marc
Very nice your journey. Thanks for the video. A Big Hug from Argentina.
How long did this journey take you?
It was about 19 hours
I have a very very important question I am thinking about buying a 22 foot boat will it be big enough to sail the ocean I wanted to live on it plz help me out plz
Try it and let me know, I'm no expert on ocean sailing 😉 What I do know is preparation and understanding is most important
It depends on the boat but more importantly if you have to ask thequestionyou are not anywhere nearready to sail anywhere please spend a year or so learning to sail read all you can about the basics try to meet with experienced sailors who can help you along then when you have learned enough you will know what boat to buy but very few 22ftboats can cross oceans even in the hands of experts they are not built for the job and can't carry enough food water spares and everything els required just because a few peop!e have crossed the sea on small boats dose not mean everyone can almost all who try fail I don't want to put you off sailing but it's not like driving a camper van across the world it's extremely scary and dangerous in less youreally know what you are doing all the best john
highly enjoyable, quite competent as well
Nice trip, thanks for sharing the journey. Those big ships would make me panic.
Nice job! One comment: I was always taught that your heading should be perpendicular to the TSS and not your course and this for two reasons: your crossing will be faster and you are more visible to the vessels in the TSS.
This is correct, the heading should be at right angles, i'd plotted courses to steer to monitor the tide set which at the time was nill. Many thanks for watching!
Very nice video Sam, thanks for sharing. 👍 Chris
Thanks for watching Chris
Well done Sam, well planned and plotted and well executed. Great video.👍👍👍
Thankyou for watching 😎
I am irish I get sunburn sailing in Mediteranian .
is sailing in mediteranian in winters safe
great video as usual
Used to bring the barges over from holland good fun
Nice trip and very well handled.
Thanks David
So excited to try and sail to Southampton from usa Any advice ? Im going in a tanzer 22’
All the best with your trip Adam, stay safe, plan for the very worst. If I were to do such a trip in my boat the cabin would be made watertight. Most of the lockers would be sealed with foam, the amount required for your boat displacement would need to be calculated prior too. The chainplates would be reinforced and i'd speak to a rigger about gauge of rigging increase.
no problem ,good look ,see you
Cool video! Very inspiring! Fair winds!
Really nice video Sam, I enjoyed the pictures of the town. Thanks for posting.
Thanks Chris
Hi, I want to sail the from Oostende to Londen this summer. I was told using an outboard engine is not the best for the sea. On high waves it comes out of the water. Also I don't have AIS. Is that bad? And i'm really struggling on finding information which route to take.
Hi, an outboard engine is fine, make sure you have the correct specificatiin of engine for your boat. A 'short shaft' typically used on a small inflatable boat will probably not work on a larger sailboat using it. AIS reciever is advisable for your trip. Lots of shipping
I suppose I’m not alone in thinking I’d love to do that, where should I begin my study and would you start on a dingy in a club. Great videos.
Hi Rob, thanks for watching. If anyone wants to get into sailing then yes a local club that is well focused on teaching people how to sail is a great start. Its not only the instructors you can learn from but other experienced sailors. All the best!
I went against this and tried to find a local sailor that would be willing to get me out on the water firstly, then i went for a smaller yacht and dinghy sailing when i loved it...
Watching po
Total respect mate well done know the water's well and to do it in a 22 foot boat takes so bottle say safe and take care
lovely trip!
Brilliant stuff!
Cool video! Very inspiring! Fair winds!
Thankyou for watching
Thanks, enjoyed seeing your trip! Best wishes
Thanks for watching Mark
No music nexts time
Congratulation captain good job
Well done.
Nice little video mate
Great video, thanks!
Awesome . More please
Am buying a sail boat your size and hoping I can sail around the world with, do you think it will be able to make that voyage
Has Brexit made trips like this a little bit more challenging in terms of access to Ostend?
Im hoping to find this out soon
not as much as covid has!
Great video. Thankyou.
That is bad ass man! Tidy work 😎👌
I’m so jealous of you you don’t understand
Go to know you can do this crossing in a day.
Fab video when I have the balls to move my 22ft Pandora mk1 by sailing it on my own from Caernarfon Castle to Pill or maybe Weston- Super- Mare ( I have not joined a sailing club yet and got a mooring) I will make a video and put it on UA-cam.
I have a 4hp four stroke with remote control on it. I guess it will use about the same 1.2 litres an hour as yours? Keep making the video's they are very informative.
Fuel consumption is very approximate, the stated consumption from manufacturers is under test conditions, it doesn't include things like tide and weather effects. All the best with your trip, safe travel. Thank-you for watching
Ciaran Byrne Pill in Somerset ?
@@PillSharks Yes
Ciaran Byrne so what’s your connection with Pill on the mud then? That’s a long old slog from North Wales around into the Bristol Channel... anyway there’s plenty of mooring available in both Creeks now I would think, my own Boats also in the Pill and since Portishead marina has been built it’s gone from all the mooring being full to lost available as they don’t like the mud!
@@PillSharks I'm hoping to become a member of Portishead Cruising club I might find out tomorrow, fingers crossed. Looks like a great sailing club. It is very muddy yes but very close to home. It will be an adventure getting it there. I will make a few video's myself and post them. I will have to learn how to edit them though.
Nice video
Thankyou for watching
Did you go straight from Nieuport to harwich or via dover? How long was the crossing?
I returned to Harwich from Belgium. I was tempted to go via ramsgate due to wind direction, but about 20 miles out it became favourable to sail the rest of the way.
Well done chronicles of coming features a Hurley that ventures further
Ah yes Atilla Vedo in Comino. Quite the budget adventure. As seaworthy as the H22 is, from a comfort factor I'd prefer something a little bigger 😄. Thanks for watching
You are not allowed to cross the shipping lanes at right angles and can be fined
Thanks for watching David, rule 10 c of the international collision regulations states crossing is permisable at right angles where no other route is possible with no correction for tide set. The whole purpose being that crossing be made in short a time as possible.
I am planning to sail all the way to brussels any tips and how expensive is it to moor a boat of that size per day
Its about 40$ a night give or take
how much it cost the boat to be a port in belgium every nicht?
It varies depending on boat length, but i pay about €20
Very nice trip man!
Good video mate! Is she an outboard in the well job? What litres per hour does it do?
Yes outboard well, fuel consumption depends on sea state, weather conditions and what speed over ground you want. Generally speaking it does about 1.2 litres, an hour in good conditions at 70% throttle, this gives me approx. 5 knots through the water in this boat.
Sam T cool thanks, keep up the vids!!
Awesome vid! =)
(how much would a boat like yours cost second hand if you don't mind me asking?)
Thanks for watching! Second hand the Hurley 22's usually sell anywhere between £500-£4000 depending on condition. In its current condition this H22 would be worth around £2500-£3000.
@@samsails9820 Thanks so much (it's nice to know that if someone has the hunger to learn, then the price isn't out of ones reach)
@@evenflow4098 don't forget you need to berth them somewhere, mariners would cost about £2200 a year for a 22fter, mud berths or swinging moorings are a lot cheaper
@@BillSikes. Thanks! (I set aside a chunk for a berth...It's purchasing a cheap boat without knowing much about what problems to look out for that's scary=)
@@evenflow4098
Get it surveyed before you commit, personally I'd go for a contessa 26 if I were about to buy a another boat, they're a pedigree little blue water yacht that have many circumnavigations to boast of, you can pick one up for 3-4 grand
Yes enjoyable, just wish you folk would not play annoying sounds in background, whats wrong with the Sea and Wind .
Noted Rob, thanks for watching :)
That's hardly a crossing of the Nth Sea, more like a Channel crossing. Shetland to Norway and return in a 19 footer, now that's more like a Nth Sea crossing!
Geographically this is the North Sea, the English Channel starts from the Dover straits. I would like to sail to Norway one year, there are alot of great places to sail along the coast. All the best.
