I was in high school in the 1950s and, folks, this isn't the Disney version of how it was, this is how it was. We all knew we were living in a special time, we all knew a lot of it had the ring of being a very restricted and controlled culture, but on the other hand I don't think we felt we were missing anything. Yes, we dressed up to go other kids' homes, we were respectful our friends' parents life was utterly predictable. It didn't last but it was nice to be part of.
Maybe in your neck of the woods (everyone lives in the same woods), but in mine( California) it was all about sex at the drive-in theater or at some girl's house when her parents were gone, dexadrine ("cross tops", speed) and weed, booze, and drag racing; all eventually leading up to the Vietnam War. THAT was the F'ing 50s and 60s folks. So I have to ask, where the hell were you, Wayne? Walt's back pocket? Even for Annette it ended in MS. Sorry, but I have no tolerance for BS.
@@davidroberts1702 In this version of the '50s, the kids were pretty well to do, with the adults maintaining a somewhat tighter rein of control. I can appreciate that no teens were capable of being hermetically sealed, still, you didn't mention your own socio-economic strata as you made your way through your teens. Was your family's social status comparable to that which is depicted here ? Mine certainly wasn't.
@@davidroberts1702 Why jump all over a person like that? Except for the dress code, kids were like that in my childhood years (in the early 1990s.) You're one more reason to dislike CA.
I left a comment on another video saying I'd seen this serial from beginning to end...well, it turns out there were quite a few I didn't see. I had no idea it went up to 19 episodes. Wish there were more, but it's nice the way everything wraps up at the end. I can't believe I spent over 3 hours today watching this! Thanks all the more for uploading all of it!
There is something very nostalgic about this series, a time and place and people who will live forever here and in our hearts. The internet and John Sutfin brings timeless joy. Thank you for posting this. I never saw this before, the series, but love it all the more. When I was seven I adored Karen Pendleton, the blond announcer. All these kids were fantastic.
And notice how back then an apology really was an apology -- without any justification for having been wrong or shifting blame. Nobody truly apologizes for anything these days, more's the pity.
My mind was quite blown when they finally found that necklace stuck in the piano. And it really left me surprised and impressed to know that they solved that mystery at last and that Laura was very regretful of what she'd been doing ever since she lost it. If only they HAD looked more thoroughly in it, though, she would never have been that way towards everyone in the gang, especially Annette. But it's very good that she made her apology to her and became friends with her. She deserved to do so to her after everything they went through (and obviously did have it coming to her when Jet fought her), and I enjoyed how everyone performed and celebrated with her.
What an absolute treat to finally find this series. I've been looking on line for years. It was my favorite segment when I was a kid. I had no idea it had so many episodes. I remember when kids actually behaved like this manners and all. I've always had a crush on Tim Considine. My library is complete.
I was born in 1956, but remember seeing the Mickey Mouse Club with my Foster Family in Columbus, Ohio. Black & white TV left so much to the imagination, and the decency of the characters was honorable..... I miss the those wonderful days!!!
Ditto ... but these shows also painted an VERY Unrealistic image of the average American Family. Showing such an ideal image, can only make kids feel bad, because they are powerless to "fix" their family.
I agree. It's that moment that after the mystery was finally solved she should feel ashamed of herself and apologize for everything she's done to Annette. And it certainly helped well to do that.
I remember watching this every night during my first summer home from college. Sure was fun watching all the old-school Disney stuff in the wee hours of the morning. That's all gone now. I haven't watched The Disney Channel in ten years, since it became another Nickelodeon(whose quality has also declined since 2000).
Nice to see the old MMC gang outside their usual roles and playing Hollywood fifties teens and obviously relishing the chance. I see two of my faves in Bonnie Lynn Fields and Cheryl Holdridge in non-speaking parts and the wonderful Doreen Tracey as '' Val ''. Wonderful stuff!
Thank you for sharing this!! I have never been able to find it, just scenes from it. It's so nice to see Annette, and Tim Considine, and Roberta Shore, and David Stollery!! The way teens we're depicted was so different than today!! It's so nice to see the classy Annette, she was a real star! 😀😀
I went to high school in the 50’s. This is just how I remember it. Come to think about it, this is _exactly_ as I remember it. I even worked in that malt shoppe. That’s where I met Annette. I’m pretty sure. Either that, or I may just remember watching this show in the 70’s. Oh, well.
I was 8 years old in 1958 and I remember these serials.....they were like real dramas to me.......now here I am at 70 yo......binge watching all nineteen episodes and drinking Captain Morgan & Diet Coke.......
I watched all 19 over the past couple days too. Can't believe I never watched any of them back in the day but for whatever the reason I just never did. This sure brought back memories though but left me wishing there were more beyond number 19...
Cory, Not silly for those of us who were literally the same age as the characters portrayed. I was an 11yr old 6th grader and could really identify and feel their discomfort as I watched back then. I also heavily identified with the emotions expressed in the daily miniseries segments of Spin and Marty. One of my other favorites. Powerful memory emotions.
As a young viewer who watched the original segments after school, I was struck by all the psychological abuse Annette encountered from her peers as she attempted to ajust to her new caregivers, a new high school and her own physical development including teenage sexuality issues. These were real issues that were seldom addressed. Now of course, more than 50 years later, teenagers are faced with a lot more than what Annette face, but it did have a impact at the time. Thanks for uploading it.
I love watching these episodes. So different from the garbage of today. Respect for your elders, everyone is courteous to each other. Just a dream World now to look back on
Laura, seated at the piano, is played by Roberta Shore, who was best known as Betsy on "The Virginian." Shore was singing professionally when was 10. Jet (blonde ponytail, standing) is played by Judy Nugent. Nugent didn't have a good singing voice. Somebody else sang her part, and it was dubbed in. The short girl who speaks her part is Sharon Baird, the best dancer of the Mousketeers
I never would have seen this except in the mid 70's, when I was a high schooler, my youngest brother watched the MMC (in syndication) almost every day after school, and I gradually came around to paying a little attention, knowing there were child stars, a few of whom became more mature stars. But I still didn't know that much about them-- even about Annette. So now, in my 50's, I consider this as something like a priceless piece of 20th century Americana, an innocent era only a few years before America would change permanently-- in some ways for the better, but certainly not positively in every way. I guess I've never told that little brother of mine that Annette's career and her later MS would have been news items that meant nothing to me if not for his watching the show in the afternoons. This serial may be "Disney-esque", where everything works out, but I like to think of what would have happened further. Probably nobody has written a fanfic about the Old South High class of '60 25th or 50th, have they? Since I've written many fanfics before, I might think about it. But I don't know where to post it.
I re-watched the entire series (having seen it when originally aired!). My favorite actor was Judy Nugent playing Jet. Judy had star power and truly made the play work. I found the music A-1 and enjoyed the re-creations of 50's teen get togethers...a much better time. Thank you for this!

Something only girls would catch - side ziippers on sheaths, straight skirts with wide waistbands and straps, a tab on the back of a shirt, small scarves worn as fashion around the neck. nylon cardigans buttoned up and worn as tops.
I remember those sweaters. "Banlon" was the name of the synthetic fabric they were made of. My mother took me shopping at a store named Prytowski's that carried Banlon sweaters back in the 1950s. I always loved how smooth they looked compared to real wool sweaters. By the time I got into high school, it was back to natural fibers and wool sweaters and skirts by The Villager.
It's been so much fun watching these! Thank you very much for uploading the series. The Disney Channel used to show episodes of the original Mickey Mouse Club late at night (in the Vault of Disney or something like that)--and I would try and stay up to watch them, but only caught a few episodes here and there. I don't suppose you have Spin and Marty or The Hardy Boys as well? In either case, thank you again.

Steve and Jet flirt for a bit and kinda' date now and then, but it never really goes anywhere. Both end up married to entirely different people. But yes, Mike and Annette do end up together :)
Sharon Baird is as tall standing up as Roberta Shore is sitting down. I saw her in an 80s Gallagher HBO special - she looked the same, and not much taller.
I wish there were more episodes. I imagine a second season where Annette and Mike are going steady and so are Jett and Steve and then the senior prom and graduation for the guys...and off to college...will they last? Do they break up or get the senior "promise" ring?...
When ever I get tried of today's world of politics, I find peace and serenity watching the Annette serials. Although I wasn't born in the 50's damn!!! What an era what great Television shows Walt Disney created, beautiful Annette and the gang, I watched in the mid 70's after school couldn't get enough of the M.M.C. Walt Disney must be rolling in his grave to see how the left has destroyed his creation along with his woke great Grand daughter. Love that I could come back here and get that good feeling again.
I don't think this could have been made in this age of identity politics and PC culture. The fun and innocents in kids has vanished like a wisp of ancient incense, an aroma that lingered all the way through to my viewing this series today. I don't believe kids even have real parties anymore, not co-ed anyway. That kind of social education is long gone and that makes me quite sad today.
PUT IT ON. Laura was foolish to leave her necklace lying around. She had the class to apologize. I taught Don't Jump to Conclusions to my kids when I was working.
@Mocchaa: Annette & Tim Considine's characters got together at the end of the New Adventures of Spin and Marty ... so, Walt Disney had her end up with David Stollery (Mike) at the end of this series.
It didn't begin that way. Foreshadowing seemed to lead toward Annette and Steve ending up together. I guess the writers realized that this was too predictable -- not to mention already done on Spin & Marty -- so they did a mid-season switcheroo and had Jet & Steve together with Annette with Mike. Wonder how long Steve's mom will approve of him dating Jet...🤔
Mc Hobbit I was responding to a ignorant claim concerning racism. I wonder why there were no Blacks in the video. They did exist at that time didn't they.
Gosh Annette, is it too late for us to be friends? Would have been funny if Annette had said, "well, let's see now, you dumped food on me, you criticized my song, you accused me of trying to deceive everybody, and you told everyone that I stole your Necklace.....yeah, I'd say it's too late".....but of course, this was the late 50's and of course it's best to forgive and forget......I guess....

Me too! In 1975, KTTV Ch. 11 here in L.A. aired this show for three years until The New Mickey Mouse Club aired in 1978. 📺📺📺📺📺 😁😁😁😁😁

Life was much lighter back then.
Four more years before we get to hear the Classic million seller JOHNNY ANGEL by Shelley Fabares
Annette was "much older" and "very mature" in my mind.
Lovely singing love this sooo much !!!
Thank you for sharing this, since i cannot afford the dvd. I use to watch this as a kid when it was all reuions in the 90s I wish I had grown up in those times. I wouldnt mind a dance party!!!

Eventually, you were the SKIPPY peanut butter mom for another generation. We never knew back then of your battle with MS.
God bless you and RIP.
Terrific and yes, SWELL! Ha Loved them all.

Lol. Me, too!

There were more adventures of "Annette" in Whitman's yearly "juvenile novels", published from 1959 through '64.
What a great series! I watched them all.
Me too!!
“We’ll leave the door unlatched for you”... wow times have certainly changed.
thanks, this bring back lots of memories.I watched this in the 50s-60s.annette is in her late 60s I believe.
Roberta Shore so pretty ,my favorite, she is still beautiful
Glad to know Ms. Shore is still alive and beautiful. Wonder if she were interviewed during Annette's illness?
Whitman Publishing turned out an "Annette" novel (based on this serial) every year, from 1959 through '64.
I just ordered and received the DVDs for the Mickey Mouse club from Disney club on line.

It looks like Disney styled her to resemble Liz Taylor.
uh I dont think so at all
How would you describe this series?
"Annette Funicello plays the most innocent person of the face of the planet."
Uncle Archie played Lumpy's father, Mr. Rutherford, on the Leave it to Beaver show.
Maria Cisneros Toth -- Followed by Mel Cooley on "The Dick Van Dyke Show"
He was also in a Perry MASON episode!
It's been so much fun watching these! Thank you very much for uploading the series. Mmm-hmm! 8:58 Annette picked herself a tall blond hunk with a job!
Yes. Mrs. Abernathy was played by Doris Packer, who was the principal on "Leave it to Beaver" and Mrs. Osborne on "Dobie Gillis."
Them's was the days! 👍👍

This was great! How about Spin and Marty?
My favorite!
Watched all the episodes
Hadn't seen this one before.
Further adventures of "Annette" were chronicled in Whitman's series of original novels from 1959 through 1964.
So...what else happened? 😁
Catchy little tune 🎶
Loved Annette.
I found it much more like real life than different. My daughter and granddaughter thinks it funny we wore dresses, skirts and hose to school.
The boys all wearing suits just for a rehearsal.
necklace was found in the piano ! to bad Annette passed away ! Thanks
All the kids were FANTASTIC
I want Annette's striped cardigan.
Me too!
It's this kind of stuff that makes me feel red, white and blue all over.
Steady = Mickey Rooney Jr without the charm.
I found him charming...although rude. Lol.
Disney’s answer to Eddie Haskell. Obnoxious teen-anger.
I love Annette sweater at the end. Wish I could find it now, but wonder what were the colors
Shelley Fabares isn't in this video.. What was so nice about back then is the word racist and sexist were two unused words. Today they are over used..
and the coloreds knew there place.
Turtles Run Yes segregation sure was SO nice. There aren't even any blacks in the video so there is no need for your comment.
Mc Hobbit
I was responding to a ignorant claim concerning racism.
I wonder why there were no Blacks in the video. They did exist at that time didn't they.
Then maybe you should add the response to that claim rather than the above comment
Mc Hobbit
I see the issue.
You have no concept of snark.
At approximately 2:52 Laura tries to play the piano but the necklace remained behind and she begins to accuse Annette of something that she didn't do.
Please if you do misplace something, please look high and low before you accuse somebody of theft. ©®

From approximately 8:42 Annette thanks Mike for taking her to the party and he remembers her that there is a date at the malt shop.
Once inside, Annette tells her Uncle Archie, her Aunt Lila and Katie that she had good time.
Behaving well will speak highly of you. ©®

At approximately 5:33 Laura begins to sing a song that is entitled: "Don't jump to conclusions" to Drew. In which at approximately 6:29 Jett Maypen is singing while holding Steve's hand. At approximately 7:00 Annette sings holding Mike's hand. Then afterwards at approximately 7:14 everybody joins in and sings. At approximately 7:19 Kitty sings along to Steady and then at 7:23 everybody sings along as friends should do.
Food for thought. What would happen if this had a sequel to it?
Please remember this song and don't jump to conclusions. ©®

Everyone listening has to drink a shot every time they say “I’ll say”.
i'm only 14, and now i believe that i truly was born in the wrong era.

ramblergarage Yep ! Me... wasn't " Johnny Angel" her big hit ?!
@@catherinecrow5662, yes, "Johnny Angel" was Shelley's hit, and Annette became her best friend.
