Nin has a history of three thousand years. Nin was founded by the Illyrian tribe Liburni in the ninth century BC. During the Roman Empire it was an important sea port and municipality. The most significant Roman-era complex is a forum with a monumental temple. In the Middle Ages, Nin was a political, religious and cultural center. Nin is the oldest royal city. It is the capital of the Croatian national rulers: Višeslav, Trpimir and Branimir, Tomislav, Petar Krešimir IV, Zvonimir, and Šubić Bribirski. Nin was a diocese from the 9th to the 19th centuries. The most important bishop is Gregory Ninski.
