Casey thank you so much. I read that article yesterday and felt so mad at it, but they are writing from a specific angle. I am a new mom to twins and have started to stay at home to raise them. I sacrificed my career but at night when the babies are asleep I am making kids music and animations and just started this channel. Of course I hope to gain subscribers and to eventually make a little income off it but the joy is really in creating the content and connecting with the community.
thank you casey, im myself is a small channel. and although its unmotivating not receiving the recognition you feel you deserve. it is motivating to know people like you encourage me and my fellow "below 1000 youtubers" to keep pushing and dont stop creating.

Check It Out That's how most of the big UA-camrs- ijustine, MKBHD ,Soldier knows best etc ..Got started I remember back in 2007 - 2008 when marques brownlee had a relatively small channel .Then about 2010 he got huge .And that's because he was uploading quality videos over quantity. I hardly ever see him upload now though
Casey, I agree with everything said. I started out with 0 subscribers and in a couple months I was up to 2k. It was not about the money but about doing something I love and sharing it with others. Stay motivated
The problem with the new UA-cam policy is it kills hope. I remember when I first uploaded a couple videos to see how it goes and was motivated to improve by the tiny amounts of money I was being paid. Now, small, new creators may have to work everyday for an entire year to hit that watch time mark, or be forced to just put out tons of shit content in order to hit this arbitrary 4k hours mark. Rather than getting creators to focus on getting better it forces them to create more shit content to get watch time. Not to mention a year of work that goes unpaid. Only people like your friend, Peter, who was already a professional can make it. He already knows exactly what to do. Most people starting out have no idea and have to learn, try, get better, and their efforts are for literally nothing. This doesn't even factor in covering any costs involved in starting a channel. It is just really hard to stay motivated to improve when you get no results. The worst is even if you hit the 4k hours mark you now have to deal with UA-cam constantly flagging your videos and stealing your money until they "sort it out". They never paid you during the last policy until you hit $100, so it is not like they were losing money on small creators before, either. This new policy just seems like a huge scam.
Team Shmo sadly, monetization isn’t supposed to help small youtubers in 2018, it’s supposed to benefit the bigger youtubers with consistently viewed/largely viewed traffic. The cutting of monetization for the smaller youtubers benefits larger youtubers by increasing search relevance/recommendation and amount earned x100 views.
Team Shmo I personally think making videos should be fun in the first place. Money comes later and is not as important. I started writing my own music about 5 years ago and have never made a single penny. I see it as a way to express myself, not to make money from. While it would be great to make a living of my greatest passion, it's not the money that I do it for. The opportunity to make that money has not been taken away from you either. But I do agree with you on your point about not getting that extra motivation you get from your first small payments.
My feeling is that the major advertisers asked for this, so that their ad dollars get spent on the videos that offer the greatest chance of greater viewership.
PVRE BLUE. 99% of businesses start by fun. People never expect to make it a job that pays but as they get better they realize they could actually make a career out of it. This has happened to me and most business owners I know. However, it always starts with earning a little money. The 4k hours is a lot. Working hard for pennies at least shows people it's possible the can make money from their craft. Working hard and earning nothing is the ultimate dream killer. I understand about doing things for fun, but life is expensive. The fun has to be paid for somehow and I'd really not like spending an extra 20hrs a week on something that costs me money and I'll never earn a dime from. That's why most people work all week and only do something they enjoy for a couple hours on the weekend. It's all they can afford to do. UA-cam was great because not only could you do fun things on the weekend, but you got paid to do it. This made you want to do more of it and the harder you worked the more you earned. Not anymore, however.
Thanks for speaking out as always Casey. We need voices who take these crazy stories & address their crazy claims. A lot of us, myself included just create to create, I can't even monetise my films. 🙏
These are the things I get told as an 8th grade filmmaker. People give me looks when I tell them that I am on UA-cam. And I start to doubt myself and question the relevance of my work because of it. But I don't want to be a UA-camr. I want to be DP or director or something along those lines. I USE UA-cam as a creative outlet, not a career path. Just because I create on this platform doesn't mean I want to be some star or what ever. Not at all... Sorry if that made no sense.
Im going to put this straight to you; Fuck em. As a twenty two year old "adult" I envy your drive and dedication to do want, when I was in eighth grade I was making fart jokes and having a jaded outlook on how easily success would happen like it does in movies. Your work is great you seriously do have a knack for this line of work; my only critique is to work on your off hand shooting. What worked for me when I was doing athletic photography in high school was to apply some basic concepts I learned from videos of off hand marksmanship such as steady breathing and bracing your arms on your torso. Keep up the hard work and I hope to see more work from you.
The messages I have received as a result of my few videos is the sole motivation I need to continue. I have a tiny channel that I’m proud of- having one person tell me they love my content has made it worthwhile. To anyone else, keep going!
Wow I really needed to hear this message today!! Thanks for this video! Sometimes I get down that it’s so tough to grow an account. This inspires me to keep getting better and keep doing what I love.
Got removed from the YPP and I don't mind it one bit. It's all about creating films and vlogs for me and what is $2 p/m gonna help me with that? Yes, I was demotivated initially, but then it motivated me more than ever to prove UA-cam wrong. Keep on creating everyone!
I think it's important to remember that UA-cam isn't 'paying' anyone. It is a platform that facilitates a relationship between advertisers and creators. It's essentially a middle-man. Nobody 'deserves' to get paid simply for creating content, just as a painter doesn't get paid for creating paintings. Someone has to 'buy' your product. If you want to make money from creating videos, go and work in advertising, film or television. If you're doing it because you love it, upload them to UA-cam and (if you're lucky) you might get paid for it. But never EXPECT to get paid - there are millions of others doing exactly the same thing as you.
Thank u Casey for showing people NOT to let down their dreams, although I once had a UA-cam channel, all those out there, big or small, little or old no matter what and who u r always do what u love to do. Btw Casey huge follower thx for making this video!!!
I think the main reason ppl love you is that you have build your magnificent UA-cam career from 0 and did not forget at any point where you have started from. Cheers from a romanian fan! :)
I only have 150 subscribers at this point, but my videos have gotten me more clients, and they are starting to spread my influence in my local city and online as a trusted source for guitar lessons. So the benefits to me have been immediate.
Great video. I've been lucky enough to have some success on this platform, and have tried to reinvest all of the money I have made back into the platform-buying new microphones, books, movies, etc. all things I need to find success. Thank you for making a video like this, UA-cam is about so much more than a career, it's a place for creative people to be creative.
Read this article when it came out. Totally agree Casey. I make videos because I like home brewing and meeting other brewers, not because I’m looking to make money. This is the motivation.
You've definitely inspired and motivated me to start my own channel and really create content that I'm proud of, even if nobody happens to watch it. Thank you Casey!
I started my channel because I'm fascinated by science and experiments, I will do my best and I will never give up. This is my public promiss to you Casey. Thank you for you support.
Dude you inspire me more and more every time I watch your vids... You are my hero and you give much inspiration to the youtube community... Thumbs up I support your 100%..... You're a good person...
I used to spend half my life chasing networks. Now with UA-cam, I've swapped that time for time to create. As a result 100 times more people see my work than when I was on TV only.
You are hands down one of the most inspiring people ever. I give your life example as advice to everyone that is down about something. In this day and age everyone doesn't know what work is and just want instant gratification. I started my channel in 2013 and only have a little over 500 subscribers. I'm a full time student and creator but I'm not doing it for subs and views. I do it because that's what I want to do. It's just another area to share what I love and hope to inspires others as well. Love the video!
You are on point with this, Casey! If anything I learn more from preparing for each video than I would otherwise. To live is to grow and UA-cam allows us all to express ourselves in our own way.
Nice work Casey. I am one of those mini tubers who fell short of 1000 subs. I am still going and so are my kids! Thanks for the words of inspiration. Cheers.
honestly, i haven't made a cent of my videos. i don't plan on it. its not like i'm ever gonna blow up, or like i will ever become something big. i just want to make shit, you know?? i'll just be happy if i can CREATE. as long as i can create, i don't care what else i have to do to pay the bills.
lexamazing UPDATE: 'matty love debunks' proves Logan faked the suicide with a paid actor and colluded with UA-cam to mass delete channels and push new harsh policies
I remember watching you on UA-cam like 9/10years ago when you was showing us how you kept a GoPro on at all times as a cctv for your door, and how when the battery dies you send it back to GoPro for a replacement haha. And I’m still here watching now Casey. Growing stronger all the time
I started my UA-cam channel shortly after they announced the new requirements for monetization, and though it's hard and I know I won't be compensated for my content anytime soon, it still didn't discourage me to pursue this, because it's my passion. And it's something I've been meaning to do in a while to keep me sane while sitting in front of a computer all day for my day job. It sucks when there are people who think everything is about the money, because while money is of course a very important factor for us to live, there are other things that should motivate us and keep us going. Anyway I feel like I'm babbling now. Haha! But thanks Casey, I needed this. Keep inspiring us! 💖
I only started youtube so I can store all the wonderful memories onto the internet and look about the good times. Though I do love to share my story and adventure to the world too. I'm never going to stop making videos.
I have been making youtube for a year now (actually more, but 1 year with this channel), and still got 190 subs. Honestly I don't care about money, or subs. I love making videos, just the process of seeing an idea coming to life is amazing. I'll keep making videos no matter what, even if there'll always will be 1 person watching.
Money is a bit of an incentive though. I spend nearly 100+ hours on some of my videos patiently making them, and as a consequence can only upload once a month. If I actually got paid, I'd have the opportunity to pour everything into my passion. Money definitely isn't everything, but it's still something that brings sustainability - and if you can thrive and get that on this platform then good for you.
I haven't hit a subscribe button on UA-cam in a couple years, if I were to guess. I prefer to just roam around and find new unique videos, and manually search up channels that I watch regularly. However, your videos were good enough to make me subscribe. I hope you are able to grow, as it is instantly easy to see how much effort goes into each video! Best of luck.
Thanks s much for approaching this subject - so important that creators don't get discouraged to create because of what other people may think! I was affected by the monetisation rules in February, however will keep on making content and keep looking forward. Life is not a path of roses regardless of what you do but when you put your passion behind it anything is possible.
SAY IT LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK! 🙌 We never set out on UA-cam to make money. It was primarily the best way to document the beginning of our life together as a young married couple (we're a vlogging military family). We have these wild and beautiful memories that act as a digital scrapbook of the highs and lows of this crazy journey called life, and we wouldn't trade it for the world. Being a youtuber is about passion. It's the BEST creative outlet I've found, and I love every piece of filming, editing, and interacting with people all across the globe. What a beautiful age we live in where we can connect with virtually anyone, anywhere. That's AMAZING! And whenever articles like these come out, it just kind of feels like the authors and publications miss the mark. Most of us (at least, the good eggs, I'd bet) aren't here to make a quick buck. It's way, way more difficult than that. We're here to document our own individual journeys, release some creative energy, and to make friendships worldwide. That's the beauty of youtube.
That’s why we started. Just to capture our memories and adventures together. Meeting fellow travellers and creators. Improving motivation and confidence to approach new friends 🙌💜
I found this video randomly and I would like to say thank you! Despite the changes to this platform, you inspire me to keep pushing our tiny channel forward. We love being creative and sometimes its easy to get discouraged by our lack of growth. I appreciate you supportive attitude and yes I'm new to your channel but I will subscribe! I'f you actually read this~ have an awesome day!
I currently have 92 subscribers and I know I made that happen through my passion of creating the videos I make. I do it so that when I am older I can look back and my children can look back at an archive of footage.
This gave me so much motivation I got goosebumps from the montage and Yoda at the end, Casey you are the Yoda of youtube, thanks for the inspiration. My channel grew 50 subs this month because at the start of the year I made the decision I want to achieve this, hopefully it will continue to grow and this vlog has just lit the fire that makes me wanna get the next video made!
YODA FOR THE WIN!! As someone who has a tiny channel, this video really meant a lot to me. I try to tell myself that the “subscriber count” doesn’t matter, that you don’t need that kind of validation. Just follow your WHY and follow your heart; You remind yourself how cool is to create content on your own terms but sometimes... the numbers do get to you. But then there’s that one person who takes the time out of their day to comment and it makes the whole journey better. Just have to keep on keeping on 💪🏼
Casey you could never be more right! I dream to make people smile and to entertain for the future! Thank you for inspiring me to be better and work harder!
I do youtube because I enjoy youtube, and making videos with a passion! I have always loved being in front of a camera, and I won't stop until I get there, because anything is possible if you work hard and never give up!!
UA-cam should always be a passion and not a money making platform! I started vlogging as a digital photo album of my kids growing up and looking back out trips Ect... I absolutely love making content and i always will, my kids create content, I create content and it's so healthy for them. Love you for making this video!

it is and still will always be my dream to have youtube as my job, i’m never letting up or giving in, nice video casey!
Preach preach preach preach. We create because we can’t not create.
Oliver J Hughes yea!

Oliver J Hughes k
Oliver J Hughes Never stop chasing your dreams, because sometimes all you need is just 1 more step! Use every excuse you can to stay motivated, inspired and to keep yourself working hard! Remember...failure is not an option! So stay strong, keep pushing forward and you will overcome any obstacle! If you fail, use that failure as fuel to keep going and push even harder. Good luck everyone!
Why does it have to be a success or a failure, why can’t it be something you just do
Check It Out because society.
Tell that to those whining about demonetization, they need that reality check.
Check It Out its in quotes for a reason. It means what is generally considered success on UA-cam. As in , making a living and being somewhat popular
I agree
This was very nice of him, thanks for the good spirit Casey!
I don't give up! I Keep fighting :D
Thanks for speaking out as always Casey. We need voices who take these crazy stories & address their crazy claims.
A lot of us, myself included just create to create, I can't even monetise my films. 🙏
this is what I'm saying. I don't need the money but to stay creative some feedback would be great. I'm barely getting any comments :(
Everyone (Casey included) started with *ZERO* subscribers & made no money from AdSense. If that isn't motivation, I don't know what is.
American Goulash Keep at it my man!
Wtf Sam hey it's louis that's so weird
I don't care about the money. I just want to build a community where you don't feel alone 🙂
You are a big inspiration to me! You content, your filmaking, your mindset. Keep doing you! THANK YOU FOR THIS!
Big corporations trying to take over the platform.
they're not trying google owns this
These are the things I get told as an 8th grade filmmaker.
Perfect Sense.
then don't worry about what people are telling you.. fuck them.. Do what you want to do bc you love to do it..
Nothing more, nothing less.
Chinook Productions nice channel btw keep it up
Im going to put this straight to you; Fuck em.
That's what I love to hear.
Stay positive guys and keep rolling on..it will happen!!!!!!
Thanks for the encouragement. It is nice to hear that people believe in us, and are routing for us small UA-camrs.
And this is why I love Neistat's videos. Always showing the positive outcome from a negative standpoint. Great video as always Casey!
The messages I have received as a result of my few videos is the sole motivation I need to continue. I have a tiny channel that I’m proud of- having one person tell me they love my content has made it worthwhile. To anyone else, keep going!
This is so realtable. Makes me want to go check out your channel.
Success is very subjective... The biggest misconception is that # of subs = success...
Tactical Toolbox Successful YTer of course has to measure on number of subscribers.
Absolutely.
Except, if you want to get paid, that's exactly how the platform now measures whether or not you deserve to earn anything for your efforts.
I agree. My all time favorite youtubers have smaller sub counts and I don't know how I could have ever looked past smaller UA-camrs before!
Solid words Alison. As an example: a young South African girl her channel is Ash Films. Gem
Wow I really needed to hear this message today!! Thanks for this video! Sometimes I get down that it’s so tough to grow an account. This inspires me to keep getting better and keep doing what I love.
Dude. Amen brother. Thank you for standing up for us.
Got removed from the YPP and I don't mind it one bit. It's all about creating films and vlogs for me and what is $2 p/m gonna help me with that? Yes, I was demotivated initially, but then it motivated me more than ever to prove UA-cam wrong. Keep on creating everyone!
True that!!
That’s the best way to look at the situation ❤️💙💚👌🏻
I think it's important to remember that UA-cam isn't 'paying' anyone. It is a platform that facilitates a relationship between advertisers and creators. It's essentially a middle-man. Nobody 'deserves' to get paid simply for creating content, just as a painter doesn't get paid for creating paintings. Someone has to 'buy' your product. If you want to make money from creating videos, go and work in advertising, film or television. If you're doing it because you love it, upload them to UA-cam and (if you're lucky) you might get paid for it. But never EXPECT to get paid - there are millions of others doing exactly the same thing as you.
well said!
That's a great way of looking at it. I often forget that's how it works
Good point, but there are definitely barriers to entry for newcomers. However, that is true of many industries.
Great attitude. Im trying to keep the same perspective
Got a fair few more now!
Now you have more than 4k.
He allways KEEPS it REAL
sunsbookishgamesx what do you know about keeping it real?
I am on UA-cam from 2013 but with many different channels and dream. But never gonna stop though. Thanks Casey.
Casey I love the way your mind works dude... Your are an awesome UA-cam motivational speaker and inspire "the small guy" thanks for sticking up for us
I started my channel because I'm fascinated by science and experiments, I will do my best and I will never give up. This is my public promiss to you Casey. Thank you for you support.
Thanks for encouraging young creators!!!
Passion should always come first. Always.
I appreciate that you are talking to the little youtubers and give them motivation 😊
Rayowag It should be opportunity first, then only passion.
Dude you inspire me more and more every time I watch your vids... You are my hero and you give much inspiration to the youtube community... Thumbs up I support your 100%..... You're a good person...
Never give up and keep grinding! Thank you for the inspiration Casey
UA-camrs express themselves through the creativity of videos posted on UA-cam for fun and not just to earned the big bucks.
Cheers.
Keep going and wish you the best of luck!
honestly, i haven't made a cent of my videos. i don't plan on it. its not like i'm ever gonna blow up, or like i will ever become something big. i just want to make shit, you know?? i'll just be happy if i can CREATE. as long as i can create, i don't care what else i have to do to pay the bills.
lexamazing UPDATE: 'matty love debunks' proves Logan faked the suicide with a paid actor and colluded with UA-cam to mass delete channels and push new harsh policies
you're never gonna blow up because you clearly have no motivation, and seems like you are pretty negative.
John Legend BS, bro !
The small voices, can have big potential. Follow your dreams - Leighton Milton, 2018 👊🏻
John Legend only Logan fanboys thought it was actually a real dead body. We and everyone else all knew that it was a staged prank so plz shut up lol
I am one of those creators. I am ready to smash this thang up
"The only place you find success before work is in the dictionary"
Vince Lombardi
Wow I've never heard of that quote but I love it!!
I only started youtube so I can store all the wonderful memories onto the internet and look about the good times. Though I do love to share my story and adventure to the world too. I'm never going to stop making videos.
darrenfilms same for my family
Love your positivity Casey, absolute legend.
It’s a creative outlet for me that gives a bit of depth to my hobby. Good for you encouraging creativity!
LostInSteve sad
I am also making vids... for fun!
This is the spirit
I've been vlogging for 8 years now, I understand!
LostInSteve, I checked you out because of your comment here. I subscribed because you’re talented. Thanks for all the great content. 👏🏼👍🏼✌🏼
Curiosity propelled me to your channel and I'm glad it did.
Money is definitely always an incentive.
Best of luck.
wow nice vids dude keep it up
This comment(yours) is probably going to help you gain more viewers.
Thanks for the encouragement casy. I needed this today
That's the beauty of youtube.
preach 🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌
That’s why we started. Just to capture our memories and adventures together. Meeting fellow travellers and creators. Improving motivation and confidence to approach new friends 🙌💜
Exactly! We've met some of our closest friends here on UA-cam. Wouldn't have it any other way.
yessss
Yessss you know it! It's been such an amazing blessing for us and we're so happy we started. It's truly changed our lives.
UA-cam SUCCESS IS VERY CHALLENGING FOR SURE....50 HOURS A WEEK AND THE MOST INTELLIGENT APPROACH....AND STILL HEART-BRAKE FROM TIME TO TIME
Interesting points made - gotta keep on keeping on and never give up!
1. The most important upload is your first.
2. Make videos you want to make whether you'd get paid or not
Absolutely! And, every upload will keep getting better. The journey is pretty rewarding in its own right. ✌️
exactly!
I agree! :-)
Agreed
Colin and Samir can you check my channel and tell mi what do you think?
Thank you for inspiring me to be better and work harder!
lol my grandma bought a hot tub with her youtube money
Kevin and Lill that's pretty cool!😁
I love your grandma Kevin, she's so sweet
Savage lmao
Kevin and Lill I will sub to you
This is literally the best thing I have read all day!!!!!!
"Charge ahead because the world of creativity needs you..."
Always on point! Thanks Casey!
Don’t be afraid of failing or making mistakes! It takes risk and trying new things you can do it!
That's so true. Push the limits.***SUBSCRIBE TO MY CHANNEL. I POST AWESOME STUFF. HELP ME GROW***
I just started making Videos but I honestly enjoy talking to the Camera and giving people helpful advice and it’s something fun for me and my bf 😊🙃
Love the yoda quote. Thanks for being a positive influence on us (for now) small-time creators.
Slothy Vlogs Passion over Profit
Make content because you love creating things. ♥
This comment is way to low down.pls like the comment to show that all UA-cam channel types are all united.
CypherDen yes! This! I watched Logan Paul and he inspired me to make videos (soon!). And I found out he didn't actually film a dead body, he used a paid actor! He's innocent and 'matty love debunks' has the proof! Now I watch him again hehe he's cute too xD
CypherDen who pays the bills then? Ur creativity?
CypherDen ‼️‼️‼️‼️🌱 *EXACTLY!!! YOU HAVE TO BE PASSIONATE ABOUT WHAT YOU DO IN ORDER TO BE SUCCESSFUL ON THIS TYPE OF PLATFORM* ‼️
CypherDen I dare you to check out one channel. If u type 'SouthPaws Channel' it'll appear on 1st page. Logo's a big black paw. I dare u to watch their videos. They upload Marvel and DC related stuff.
Thank you for the video and your perspective of UA-cam.
Thanks for everything you've done Casey! It's greatly helped motivate me to step up get started with my channel which I've been wanting to start for months. Keep doing all this amazing stuff
