- There were no survivors of a helicopter crash that killed Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi along with eight others, including the country’s Foreign Minister. The crash happened in northwest Iran amid heavy fog as the group were returning from a dam inauguration near the border with Azerbaijan, state media reported.

Most helicopter pilots rely on vision rather than instruments to fly. When they have to transition to instruments they crash. The U.S. lost four helicopters in the invasion of Panama because they flew into a rainstorm, lost visual cues and crashed. It happens so often that investigators actually expect it to happen whenever there is an opportunity for it to happen. IFR in helicopter pilot speak is, “I follow roads” for a reason.
