"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
    “Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on UA-cam. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on UA-cam, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode.

The existence of a laugh track doesn't bug me that much. It's supposed to mimic the feel of a sitcom, and it's been done before (i.e. The Flintstones). The joke is supposed to be, "LGBT things are bad," but in the end the guy makes a fool of himself because, by the time he opens the damn thing, it's been shaken up so much that it gushes all over his face.

I think they object because the material is introduced to the children when they are too young and also they disagree with it in general. Conservatives see the huge explosion in transgender identification being made by kids and they feel they have to protect their children from this conditioning. It is what it is. I personally think kids should be taught important info like science, math, english, history - all the stuff we learned in the 80s and 90s and I even felt that the sexed I got in 1989 was too early and this was just talking about things biologically. This was 7th grade.
Again children should be innocent kids and not think about sex until high school but our society has gone away from this direction unfortunately and things have become hypersexualized. It was already like this in the 80s but things advanced even more as time went on.

When Norman Lear brought "All in the Family" to TV in 1971, it resulted in a timeless classic because it presented a believable family dealing w/ sexism, racism, generational gap, etc. issues in an environmental backdrop of domestic (inflation, struggling to make ends meet w/r/t work & paying bills) & foreign (war - both cold & hot) policy, & the resulting tension of the differences of opinion under one roof. The Archie Bunker character generally seemed the 'butt' of most of the jokes, but he was written & acted as more than just a one dimensional bigot. That's the 'art' of comedy which conservatives seem to miss - when you approach humor with only an agenda, nobody laughs.

Good points. I also remember one of the tragic reasons it was popular was that way too many took Archie to NOT be the target of the points the writers were making but the steadfast hero in a decaying world. His racist lines were the most remembered and recalled by the white audience. "It's only a joke" when he used the N word, etc. But I could feel the grievance and resentment clearly (as a very young person in the 70s) and it's been present ever since, from Rodney King, Ruby Ridge, Branch Davidians, Militias all the way to Charlottesville and Jan 6th.

All in the Family aired in the ‘70s, when union membership was high and the middle class was still robust. With this cartoon, we have an Archie Bunker clone parroting arch-conservative talking points that are bankrolled by union-busting billionaires, and the short ends with openly thanking one of the billionaires for saving comedy. Some may say Family Guy, though I’m unfamiliar with its more recent seasons, and I never found it truly funny. Most of the jokes are just shock based, and their jokes that are actually funny aren’t too political.

@@scorpioigor Say what you will about Family Guy but Seth MacFarlane was a staunch supporter of gay marriage even when it was very popular in the US. He was also a Bernie supporter in 2016 and got mad at Bill Maher for being anti-vax because his mother was an ex-Christian Scientist who died being afraid of modern medicine. He's not the most leftist guy, that's not what I'm saying. But he's not right wing either. He's just an old edgy 00's lib type of guy.

It would be fairly easy to make a conservative comedy show, but these writers are one-trick ponies. They just make one anti-LGBT joke every 30 seconds and somehow they think it'll NEVER get boring? Are they worried that featuring a LGBT character that DOESN'T get mocked once per minute would make their audience think they've gone woke?
The reason South Park is funny is because when they do a trans episode, it's actually hard to tell if it's mocking trans people or anti-trans people, because it allows all its characters some level of humanity. But portraying genderqueer people as strawmen characters makes you just look like a jackass when you can't stop yourself from beating the dead... strawman.

They're acting like South Park is somehow afraid of being offensive. South Park has always been an uncensored (with minor exceptions that they use metaphor to get around) show, that is simultaneously offensive, "woke", intelligent, stupid, AND ACTUALLY HILARIOUS at the same time. South Park is still all of those things... we don't need some wannabe conservative show. Watch South Park Seasons 22-26 and the specials if you think South Park is holding back nowadays or some shit.

Larry Elder, Jesse Lee Peterson, Greg Gutfeld, & Elon Musk on the same stage in the same rip-off of South Park is enough to make anyone with even half a brain & a sense of humor want to puke.
