We're so lucky that G.G. wanted to share his stoke with all of us.Watched him at Rincon when I was a grom and wanted to be just like him when I grew up. I never grew up.
GG is a talented and industrious man, but wow did he get into some hazardous work. Barefoot in the junkyard? Homemade blast furnace? That scene with the LEAD? What a legend.
He came to San Diego in the mid-to-late 60s can't remember exactly when but there was a whole group of knee borders that spent their time at a place at Sunset Cliffs which in the summertime had a great inside break called the boil. Most of us were making our own boards then and when everybody saw those spoons that he was making and how flexible they were my friends all started making those and I had the pleasure of riding many of those old spoons. So lucky to have been part of that generation of surfing and my brother and I made all of our own surfboards then. We laid up our own fins and made our own shapes . Thanksgiving of 1969 my older brother and I drove from San Diego to Santa Barbara and spent the 3-day weekend surfing perfect Rincon what's 6 to 10 ft faces and so many people out. I remember I was riding a 6 ft 3 all down rails with a diamond tail and a rounded nose and my brother was riding a 5'6 all down rails with a square nose and a diamond tail and Keel fins and all the boys at Rincon were still riding 8 ft plus boards and boy The Gauntlet that we how to walk down through on the beach the paddle out was ridiculous with all the people yelling at us. Great memories. I never owned a surfboard that I didn't make myself
I saw this movie at the Santa Cruz Civic in 1973.We were riding inflatable rafts around here in the summer back then. I bought one with twin fins at Thrifty Drug store. Awesome flick.
Towards the end of the movie they are surfing a left that is an awesome wave. I won't say the name, but myself and 2 friends went there several times and were stoked beyond belief.
I invited a girl from my high school to see this on a first date. I was stoked out of my mind, particularly seeing those inside the barrel shots. She, not so stoked. We never went out again unfortunately. But yeah, it's a surfers film for sure.
Only time I met him was before I knew who he was, then my buddy showed me the inner most limits of pure fun, this was the late 90s while going to school in SB, been a fan of his movies, and innovations ever since

a true "da vinci", george is creative and decently financed. a perfectionist, obviously, representing with hard work and determination. I've only seen 1 or 2 knee riders, perhaps 1 was george.
That’s the only reason I came here - I originally saw “Crystal Voyager” in the Students Union at Southampton University in England in 1975 - that was my introduction to Pink Floyd - “Echoes” remains my favourite Floyd track to this day.
My guess is copyright infringement made them take it out though the Floyd is still named in the opening credits. "New car, caviar, four star daydream..." Indeed.
I'm 76, an old timey surfer .. I still have a flex fin made by that giant...I used it off and on for many many years on various boards. It would rocket you up the face,

Foils and rocker were what Greenough started everyone thinking about. Now its a science. Thank you George.

George is light years ahead. The mind of a scientist in the body of a searcher. He still makes an impact today. Thanks George.

He is one of a kind. What he accomplishes in this movie blows my mind.
Morning of the earth best of all with this second....I went from a surfboard to a mat than a kneeboard because of george .....

A masterpiece thanks for sharing
Scrounging around for iron ballast at the wrecking yard... barefoot. How badass is that?

great one, thanks for putting this out here
Where's the section with Pink Floyd's Echoes? A third of the film is missing!

@joekitchell8509 My thoughts exactly. One of the best sequences in the film given the brilliant combination of excellent music and footage.
36:03 OG GoPro ! What a pioneer ! GG would be amazed what we have now.
Great upload, Hayden!

@@haydengarfield_big thanks..hope your days are fine
NICCCCCCCCCCCEEEEE YEEEEEEEEEAAAAAHHHHH!!
At least a decade before the surfboard leash became popular.
KOOK CORD🤮 helped bring surfing down you don’t have to know how to swim anymore
Met him in SB back in the day. I rode a 6' kneeboard after for many years on the Central Coast.
I saw this when it came out at the drive in It played with Easy Rider
Sick !
Legend!!!!!
The Malibu footage doesn't look that different from today, 3-5 guys who can barely surf riding one wave on archaic equipment
Literally arent watching where they drop same as it ever was
That’s no shade to this film. The film is amazing.
@@danamquinn1 Oh for sure its a sick film, more just a comment on how at malibu not much has changed

Great that you posted this killer mix of Surf and Oz Rock but where's the end footage that uses Pink Floyd's "Echoes" ???

@@canyonhaverfield2201 What ??!!??
The music as they jump off morning light to surf.. omdays.. goosebumps every time... Anyone know the song?
Far Out!
We’re all chasing a kneeboarder
Face it, he makes the skateboarders look bad.
I wonder if he and Hobie ever spent time contemplating ocean craft
🙏

Is the last surf footage Jalama?
That's what I heard years ago 🏄
Probably some of Jalama ..but a lot I believe was shot on the Hollister Ranch ...
Razorbacks

@@lemoinedrake Nope, thats not a left
Days of beaver tails and no leashes.
What are the little flaps hanging off their lower backs? For example at 4:18
Beaver tails they were called on the wetsuits of the day.
@@lemoinedrake that just made my day
Old Diving Jackets with the flap that goes around and buttons up. Usually over Long Johns.
Drop ins even then 😂
is carcass, a intolerible mat rider, from Lenny the ox, in this film? If so, please delete, with the echoes segment.
🫶🎯🤙
No leashes and beaver tails? Is this real?
It's just Neanderthalian not to stand up. LOL
