From a Raiders fan, I think Herbert is great. If Brandon Staley settles for a field goal on fourth down vs. the Cowboys it’s a different game. So many times has he made idiotic coaching decisions that cost him the game. Or he gets bailed out by his defense in such a last second lucky fashion.

No hes not overrated. Staley is simply not a NFL head coach & it’s beginning to stain Herbert’s reputation. He was selected to lead a top 5 roster & oversee Herb’s Development with minimal NFL experience. He by himself lost that team 4 games and cost them a playoff spot his rookie year. Blows the playoff lead & got saved multiple times by the talent this year. Chargers are ruining there franchise guy because theyre a bad organization

So sherm says that you can't keep making the excuse that herbert doesn't have a consistent OC yet because Tua and Burrow both had first time coaches too. DIfference is, Tua has mike mcdaniel, the smartest offensive coach in the nfl, and herbert has brandon staley, the smartest defensive coach in the nfl. Yes, herbert is to blame for this loss, but he had one bad game. He's been top 5 this year. Nobody talking about how Mahomes got outplayed by Zach Wilson because they won due to the refs bailing them, not because of mahomes.

Purdy reminds me of Kurt Warner, but faster. Warner didn't have a rocket arm, but he was deadly accurate with the midrange passes.
Elite quarterbacks win games win playoff games go to Super Bowls. Herbert is very talented but lacks the intangibles to win consistently.
Skip is brilliant at presenting arguments and rationalising a conclusion. Keyshawn does the same but with a player's mentality.
Herbert is a symptom of modern evaluating. Ever since Patrick Mahomes wowed the league, the new gold standard and metric by which we measure QBs is arm talent. It’s always mattered, but it’s held in higher regard than the ability to be accurate, throw with anticipation and process information. Herbert has elite arm talent, but he isn’t consistently accurate, he can get rattled and he will make bad decisions. But because of his arm talent, he’s given a pass. Same with Josh Allen. Josh Allen for as peerless as he can be on a good day, can also gift wins to the other team. However, every year that is all forgotten. Especially, Herbert and Allen are judged by their highlights.
One the flip side, you’ve got Tua and Purdy, who are both productive players, who win games and do it through accuracy, reading the game and throwing with anticipation. They are judged by their lowlights. Their successes are entirely attributed to the players around them. If evaluators want to go that route, what was Josh Allen before he got Diggs? They’re great player, without elite arm talent. As much as they’re not held in such high regard.

Same reason why Levis and Richardson had all that hype before the draft because all people cared about was the few highlights of them throwing rockets down the field to wide open receivers when in reality they are very inaccurate QBs. They just don't care about the intangibles no more that used to be the common trait great quaterbacks like Montana, Brady or Manning

No, the gold standard for QBs is Winning, and Josh Allen does a whole lot of said Winning. Say what you want about Allen, but the Wins speak for themselves:
2019 = 10 Wins
2020 = 13 Wins, plus 2 playoff wins
2021 = 11 Wins, plus 1 playoff win (robbed of more playoff wins, see: 13 seconds)
2022 = 13 Wins, plus 1 playoff win
2023 = on pace for 11-12 wins

What is Justin Herbert's biggest strength.. the ability to push the ball down the field. The chargers have ZERO speed and no receiver other than Keenan can run routes So they have no way to beat you down the field unless Mike Will catches a jump ball. And then they draft Johnston who is slow and can't get open when everyone knew Zay flowers was the right pick. Think about it people feared Herbert and the chargers most when Jalen Guyton of all people was running deep routes and Herbert would sling it. The offense just looks ugly and Herbert feels forced to make tight window throws every play

Justin Herbert has led the most game-winning drives in the NFL since he arrived in the league. 14 drives. The argument is that he’s not clutch? We watch MNF and decide that he always is his worst performance, but in general we ignored his monstrous performance against Minnesota, and the fact that more often than not, he plays like one of the very best quarterback in the NFL and doesn’t get half the plates or attention that is given to some of the other “elites“. I’m not sure why we’re acting as though he’s constantly celebrating, in reality we are constantly told he doesn’t have it in the clutch, he is in the leader, But the only problem is that every single stat minus wins, which is absolutely not a quarterback stat, do not back it up the most game-winning drives in the NFL since his arrival. 4 1/2 thousand passing yards last year through broken ribs. Unpopular opinion Herbert becoming a better version of Kirk Cousins but still folds in big moments
Herbert had one great rookie season and now he just has the benefit of the doubt even though he hasn't done anything in this league. What happened to results driven analysis? You gotta accomplish something. And I get it, it's a team sport and it doesn't all fall on Justin but at some point, you gotta do something. I'm not asking for a lot... I'm talking about getting some playoff wins. The playoffs are the only thing that reigns supreme
Brock Purdy is a bad comparison. Purdy has a top defense and a great RB. That matters big time.

I get it Herbert looked off last night but you can't sit here and say wins are a QB stat because they're more of a coaching stat if anything. Since it takes a whole team to win not 1 player. Get Herbert a real head coach like Andy Reid or even an offensive mind like McDaniel and watch him play better. Tua has improved so much with changing Brian Flores for McDaniel because coaching is just that important. Herbert will continue to play and do what he can and yes that Int he threw was horrible decision making by him but its also not fair for a QB to be thrown into a do or die situation in damn near 90% of his starts. Only 1 game the Chargers comfortably won without him needed to play hero ball from what I remember was beating the Colts 20-3 last season. He's definitley elite, not over rated, and he's an extremely talented player. His excuses are legit in most of his losses he has done what a QB should do to win the team falls apart majority of the time.

Just imagine if Herbert gets a great coach. Keyshawn is on point. Herbert being inaccurate is a weird, recent narrative. If he was inaccurate, he wouldn't have the stats would he?
I fear he will end up like Phillip Rivers. A great QB talent with a great supporting cast, who ultimately never goes anywhere. Just like Rivers’ Chargers, there will be hope every year and it will fail. Their current HC sucks.
