In the real show, Toph was originally supposed to be a buff guy. I don’t know why the creators decided to change it but Toph’s original design went to being Avatar Roku’s earthbending master instead of Aang’s.
One of my favourite casting choices was they had the Ember Island Player version of Zuko voiced by Derek Basco, the real life brother of Zuko's voice actor, Dante Basco.
I'm pretty sure that this episode is universally loved by the fandom. If you are going to do a recap episode THIS is how you do it. Also, this episode is a nice breather after the heavy episodes we went through recently and preparation for what coming. By the way....TISSUES! You're going to need them.
Best recap episode ever!! The writers were very in tune with their fans and clearly had a lot of fun poking fun at themselves while also reminding the audience of the journey we've all been on. I love the joke about Toph's casting for two reasons. First, of course the Fire Nation soldiers were NEVER gonna admit to being beaten by a small, blind girl so they described Toph as a mountain of muscle. Second, Toph was originally planned to be a boy but one member of the production team was convinced Toph should be a girl and right as production was starting on Book 2 he finally convinced the team to make Toph the wonderful character we all know and love. So the writers were poking fun at their original plans for the character.
I love this episode, best recap episode ever. It manages to catch the viewer up while providing poignant character moments and hilarious comedy. “There, I got a pretty good look at you” 😂
I think your summation at the end explains why this was such a great recap episode perfectly. Normally they come off as throw away episodes, like the writers didn’t have time to creat3 a real episode.

Obviously one function of the episode is to review the events of the series for the audience, but within the episode, they take full advantage of the opportunity to remind the CHARACTERS of the events of the series.
It is a recap but also shows how the fire nation propaganda influences their lives The fire nation lost their honor (they play dirty) They don’t dance or express through art They killed their dragons They lost their spirituality The lost the original way of firebending Their history has been manipulated As soon as Zuko told Ozai he was going to speak the truth he got rid of all witnesses so the true wouldn’t be know
They don't dance yet they have plays, festivals, bands, puppet shows, jugglers, a circus, magicians & street gambling. They might as well get rid off those fun things too.
I like how the play got things wrong. Sokka rowing in the back with Katara in the front. Only Sokka rowed from the front. Momo had no wings. Toph being the tallest. Bumi's outside challenges. They were inside. Mai & Ty Lee helping Azula when she shot Aang with lightning. They weren't there. Jet with a flower instead of grass. Jet using hooks instead of hook-swords. Flying over the great divide. They walked. Jet was shown being crushed by a rock? Did he die? Maybe he survived?
On a meta level there are obvious things to talk about. I like the actor Toph fan theory. The one where all the fire nation soldiers told the play write they got beat up by a large buff earth bender instead of admitting a tiny girl beat them up. But at face value, the gaang went to go watch fire nation propaganda. Propaganda was massively important during both world wars. I think that angle is the most facilitating for me.

Really looking forward to your reaction to the four part finale (IMO, one of the best finales ever). Legend of Korra will not be the same but that is a good thing and I love Korra as well.
This episode was produced in 2008 when the internet and social media wasn't quite as prevalent as it is today. So writers picking up on fan memes would have been more word of mouth and message board based. There are a few episodes of the podcast "braving the elements" where the writers talked about how they kept the pulse of the viewer base.
I was watching this in my teens as it came out and I visited that one forum that is now gone. Most people liked it and didn't mind a filler(Especially a good one)
Absolutely agree that this is the best recap episode ever. Unlike recap episodes on other shows which rely on clips from previous episodes, this episode is 100% new content which very cleverly reminds us of past events but does it as Fire Nation propaganda which over-exaggerates the Aang gang's flaws and portrays them in a comical way instead of being 100% accurate like clips. On top of that, this episode includes several nods to the fan-base like passing by the Great Divide, Sokka's comment on the uncertainty of Jet's death, and shipping Katara and Zuko to name a few.
I like that they made Toph a big buff dude for the play, coz that's how she was originally intended to be before they made her cooler ^_^ To be honest I never shipped Kitara and Aang. I understand why Aang would crush on Kitara but tbh I always shipped Kitara and Zuko more.
Also, the sources for Toph in the play were probably the The Boulder & The Hippo who made Toph out to be a huge buff guy because they didn't want to admit they were beaten by a girl...
12:35 One of my favourite episodes, it's a lighthearted spin on a recap episode(hilariously meta as one guy put it) before the epic final battle and lets Sokka play out his comic relief side before, well... You'll see. 15:04 Ha! Take that Zutara shippers! 16:04 You know how every once in a while there is a sequel like Terminator 2 that just seems to blow the original out of the water in every way? Well, Legend of Korra ain't one of those.
can't talk about others, but I loved this. It IS a kind of recap episode, but it also isn't. Typically a recap episode is a collection of clips whereas this is all new stuff that retells things [sort of] ... it also was an episode that brings up all the little questions [like IS Jet dead???] and a few interesting points - like, did you know that when they first wrote the character of Toph, she was going to be a real buff guy, then they got the idea of making her a seemingly helpless little blind girl ... so they got to make a comment on that too. On the matter of Korra - I look forward to seeing what you think of the series - it is not the same, but it is the same universe and since it is also the same creators there is a lot of similarity, but if you want something that will feel like a continuation of Avatar, I'm afraid you might be disappointed. On the other hand, if you want more stories in the unique universe which has been created here, it will deliver. It just doesn't rehash the same story. Personally, I like it just as much as I like Avatar - the two are amazing stories. My wife did not exactly agree with me on that although it was good enough in her eyes that she watched it with me when it came out. The fans of Avatar are definitely split on it but a large percentage of us either feel the two series are equal though different [like I feel] or some actually think that Korra is better [usually those tend to think the 3rd and 4th season where better than Avatar and the first two seasons where not as good as Avatar] - Honestly, I think it has a lot to do with what you are expecting when you watch it - go in with no expectations and I think you'll really enjoy Korra.
"I don't know if this is gonna be a fun, silly, comical or a more serious episode" Why yes, it is. Serious in the sense that it's the recap before the finale, so it feels serious to watch, but with that clarification it is indeed all of those things. You can assume that Katara told everyone friendly everywhere they went that she and Sokka found the Avatar from the iceberg and everyone would also be happy to tell stories of how they met the Avatar, so those would be easy for the playwright to get right, but because the cabbage guy was one of his sources and likely the only source mentioning the cabbage guy, then it's unlikely that it would be an accurate portrayal of him. Including the cabbage guy in the play would've had to show him as basically Toph v2.
I'm not really sure there is a consensus on this episodes. I think the majority (though I may be biased in thinking it's a majority since I'm in this camp) love this episode, but there's definitely a strong contingent who doesn't. The thing about recap/"clip show" episodes is that they are often really ways for the producers to create a cheap episode by recycling old stuff to fill at least half of the run length. This is different, and they didn't save any money in the way they made this one. When you remember that this show was originally aired over the course of 3 1/2 years you can see why a recap might be a good idea at this point, but rather than doing it the cheap boring way they made this episode that's full of in jokes and includes a little bit of additional character development for Aang, Katara, and Zuko.
Totally agree how they didn't go for the cheap, just-for-recap's-sake recap, but really put effort into it by making it genuinely hilarious plus showing fire nation propaganda. AND they managed to include character development. I'm pretty sure there was a recap episode in Korra, and unfortunately I don't recall it being as funny or memorable as this one :(
This episode was more meta than 4th wall break. Meta is self referencal. 4th wall is when you shatter the illusion of being in a performance and interact directly with the audience
"...a surprisingly knowledgeable merchant of cabbage" as one of the sources of the play is just *chef's kiss* So many wonderful moments in one of my favourite episodes.
This episode is quite necessary. There has been so many heavy episodes on this season and we need to ease up a bit for the finale. It is almost a filler but that is not a bad thing.
Out of all the recap episodes in anime or series in general, this is the best of them all. So cleverly done, it makes fun of it's self as it recaps. Love it. -Sage
There are also read the grafic novels. I would recommand reading the promise before you watch legends of Korra. Korra spoils the outcome of that one a little bit. You could do a read along.
Anyone who thinks this isn't one of the most brilliant episodes of the whole show is crazy. It may be a recap episode and it may be playfully breaking to fourth wall to engage with fans and poke fun at itself, but like every other episode in the show, it's a clever exploration of the characters and themes, too. What I like best about it is that, not only does it force every character to reflect on their own growth prior to the big finale, but it re-emphasizes one of Book 3's major themes--fire nation propaganda and how totalitarian regimes work. Every regime utilizes history to create a nationalist vision of the future. And every totalitarian regime twists history for its own ends (like Toph being a buff man so fire nation toadies don't look bad). History is always molded as it is recorded (through unreliable people like the cabbage merchant, filtered through a fire nation scholar's lens), and creative liberties (or informed inferences in the case of "objective" history) always have to be made to fill in gaps. Also, Peter Pan was historically always played on stage by a woman, including a version I saw in the '90s. Since Aang has so many similarities with Pan (ability to fly, mischievous, elfin personality, being frozen as a child), it's a perfect homage the writers worked in. Intertextuality, meta-narrative, and strong thematic undercurrents all woven together into a recap episode. Plus, from a series pacing standpoint, it's a nice comedic breather between the serious episodes, but still reminds us how high the stakes are at the end. This is why Avatar is one of the greatest shows of all time.
12:30 You're kidding right? Half the comments on your videos have been memes from this episode. Go back and read your comments on the episde where jet died and count the "Did Jet just die" "I don't know it was really unclear" or the great divide and the number of "Let just keep on flying"
Something I find so funny about Aang being so pressed about being played by a woman is that he... literally has been a woman in past lives. Multiple times, in fact. A lot of times, even! Aang, why are you so upset? For like, half of your existence as the avatar, you've BEEN a woman!
the avatar kinda works that way but not really aang can commune with and integrate all past avatars in certain avatar states but he is still a boy he hasn't been a girl just because previous avatars were
The only show that has a better recap episode than this one in my ipinion is Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood with Hoenheim's dream. This is a pretty solid second place though.
Bun - when you start Kora, take notice of the statues and monuments in the background. There's an obvious one that can't be missed at the start, but along the way, others fly by that you might miss if not keeping a lookout for.
It's not a spoiler to say Legend of Korra also has a recap episode. But it is important to Know Korras recap episode basically had $0 budget because the other option that Nickelodeon gave them was to Fire some employees to save money.
It is a recap but not a accurate recap. How did the Ember Island Player's know about team Avatar entering the Fire Nation the Avatar was technically dead. The Painted Lady was supposed to be a secret as well. Was it Doc, Sho, or Bushi. I know they are the same person I was being funny. Two Bosco's voiced Zuko.
im a bit surprised that you, as a female, didn t really catch on what was going on with katara and aang. Imo, the play was completely accurate on her feelings. let s be honest, if she was into aang, she wouldn t act so dismissive. Most woman wouldn't. Aang is too nice and she isn t sexually attracted to that like she is with jett and ''maybe'' zuko. Her whole thing about this not being the right time was completely an excuse. Sorry aang but you got to start not giving a f*ck.
@@bunnytailsREACTS I just don't see it, you know? Im my opinion, there were things going on between the writters when they made these choices for the characters. Hopefully, just some food for thought. Take care!

6:30 Really crazy Bunny because Toph can't write haha. But I guess she could have still dictated it to somebody.
She would find a way 😊
Anyone who thinks this isn't one of the most brilliant episodes of the whole show is crazy.
Awesome episode.
Yup!
12:30 You're kidding right? Half the comments on your videos have been memes from this episode. Go back and read your comments on the episde where jet died and count the "Did Jet just die" "I don't know it was really unclear"
or the great divide and the number of "Let just keep on flying"
I'm hoping that you are planning on watching the final 4 episodes in a single sitting... : )
Our feelings about the new live action show are team avatars feelings about the play.
That sucked.
But the effects were decent 😂
Something I find so funny about Aang being so pressed about being played by a woman is that he... literally has been a woman in past lives. Multiple times, in fact. A lot of times, even! Aang, why are you so upset? For like, half of your existence as the avatar, you've BEEN a woman!
Good point! I never even thought of that
the avatar kinda works that way but not really aang can commune with and integrate all past avatars in certain avatar states but he is still a boy he hasn't been a girl just because previous avatars were
I think he was upset because he wants katara to see him as a man.
The only show that has a better recap episode than this one in my ipinion is Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood with Hoenheim's dream. This is a pretty solid second place though.
Love you Bunny
Hey, if you're gonna do a recap episode, you may as well have fun with it, right? So why _not_ go full meta? 😂
👍
Are you going to watch the legend of korra
just do part 1 and 2 together, and 3 and 4 together and youre gucci
Well, we love your Star Trek reactions, plenty more to look forward to there!

Hello! 👋
Bun - when you start Kora, take notice of the statues and monuments in the background. There's an obvious one that can't be missed at the start, but along the way, others fly by that you might miss if not keeping a lookout for.
I’ll try to remember
So, a fanfic?
This is fanfic that is also literally canon.
It's not a spoiler to say Legend of Korra also has a recap episode. But it is important to Know Korras recap episode basically had $0 budget because the other option that Nickelodeon gave them was to Fire some employees to save money.
Legend of Korra sucks compared to Avatar the Last Airbender
Didn’t catch on? Also I’m pretty sure Aang and Katara did the nasty 😅
@@bunnytailsREACTS I just don't see it, you know? Im my opinion, there were things going on between the writters when they made these choices for the characters. Hopefully, just some food for thought.
Take care!
You're absolutely right that the way the writer incorporated feedback made the episode great.
When this episode originally aired. We had spent over 3 years watching this show. It was more appreciated than it is now with streaming available 😅😅
