- Asif Khan has unveiled a pavilion at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympic Games in South Korea, described as the "darkest building on earth".
The British architect spray-painted the 10-metre-high temporary structure with Vantablack VBx2, a substance that absorbs over 99 per cent of light.
Vantablack VBx2, is a sprayable version of Vantablack pigment, which British artist Anish Kapoor controversially acquired exclusive rights for in 2016.
Rods tipped with tiny white lights protrude from the "super-black" parabolic curves of all four sides of the pavilion, giving the impression of stars suspended against the darkness of space.
Speaking to Dezeen, Khan - who describes himself as a "closet astronaut" - said he "wanted to create the impression of a window cut into space".
"It's a preoccupation of mine, trying to create experiences to better understand where we are now as humans, placing ourselves in the big picture," said Khan.

This is one of those cases where less is more. Don't get me wrong the building is beautiful but too many lights, I get that he was trying to represent space and the stars but in this case less lights and less clusters would have done more justice to the magnitude and emptiness of outer space which is what makes it so enticing and beautiful
Saul T Yeah but if you look at space from a place with no light pollution it is that dense, however, it is more tonal than white LED’s
I also felt it but I guess it's because we are getting an arieal view, and that building is huge that when we have have clsoe look while walking in front of it, it will be breath taking!
What are you saying? only the close ups ooks like it has more.
That's why the widescape was shown 1st which looked lesser.
If they added some purples, blues, a bit of orange for some galaxies
They probably didn't want him making a building that was almost unseeable. It would be super bad especially at night.
I get it.... There is light inside the darkness. Damn thats good art!
No. It's meant to mimic space. lights are stars.
Hahahaha nice try at being deep.
anglermatt he was talking about the inside of the building nice try at being smart
They should make a Monolith with that color
Yes, they should.
and place it on the moon
Edward Benavides
Or Mars : )
If ever there was a place on Earth built for Brian Eno's music, this is pretty close to what I would imagine it looking like.
That is a gorgeous building
This is a striking and unique concept that is breathtaking!
Gorgeous gorgeous beautiful gorgeous gorgeous pretty gorgeous beautiful
Is it a futuristic toilet or what?
Unbelievably cool
Patrick Kidd Really expensive,i think you could do it better justice than just "black like the night sky"
what i enjoy the most is the loss in dimensionality, i would rather focus on that. This is a bit superficial.
Are the water drops...rendered?
I think it may just be a super hydrophobic coating
nope thats the inside of the building, a fountain that makes precise drops , thousands an hour.
Would this work for cold weather coatings to improve solar radiation absorption?
It would work beautifully, but Vantablack is more expensive by weight than gold or even diamonds. It does however absorb heat energy from light incredibly well, almost too well in fact. That building is probably blistering hot in the sunlight.
Then how could they afford to cover the building in it?
Killertomato84 objects are made “hot” by their ability to reflect heat not absorb it
thats not how physic works
It's not true Vantablack. It's a commercial paint that only works at visible light frequencies.
How does it not start burning in the sunlight
It’s brighter then my future
И мое будущее тоже....and my future too
That white room looks like technologically advanced heaven or something
It's a Tesseract, occult greetings! Get ready.
That's so annoying that it's available in spray can form but not many people can use it.
fantastica mente bello
That's dope af
Can we rename this to Dethklok Black? Blacker than the blackest black times infinity.
Error this structure has been removed from reality.
Hado number 90 (bleach reference)
Isn't vantablack super expensive
love how they would rather just make a building with a fake star field than to use the material to absorb light pollution so you can see actual stars
... do you understand how light works?
Does anyone know what music is playing during the video?
The soundscape was especially sound-designed for the Olympic Pavilion by the Berlin based audio-branding agency "why do birds".
Know we know what Disaster Area made their ship out of.
Фантастически красиво
music?
Sorry. Chapelle said it himself. Nothing's blacker than Draymond Green.
как будто текстуры не прогрузились
very dark
Qui est la pour le devoir d'art plastique ?
They should use this material for CIA black sites. It would be appropriate.
This shit prob reduces energy cost by alot
this is how rich people decide waste their money lol
i dont like the lights. at all.
I dont even know tht Anish Kapoor guy and i hate him.
doesn't look any cooler than a kids science room.... and how much did this ultra nano tube paint cost? lol
what the fuck? this is confusing
класс!!!
I have a way to create the same black with pennies
shannonandsheila1 I don't mean actually pennies. I mean it costing pennies. Einstein..
If you use up a penny, it costs a penny. Same thing!
awesome! but there's such a miserable unattractive scape around
В КОНЦЕ КРУТО МНЕ ПОНРАВИЛОСЬ БЛАГА И ЛЮБВИ НАРОД!!!
Um it's just black.
