In this video, Jono teaches you how to do a Lutz jump off-ice. This figure skating jump exercise will help you understand the Lutz jump before you go into the ice rink to try it out. Make sure you have some space before trying this off-ice exercise.
Going through this jump as a part of your off-ice training routine is key if you aim to be a good singles skater.
This video is a part of our figure skating jumps explained series where we go through figure skating jumps in order of difficulty.
It's surprising what amazing improvements can be made thanks to practising key off ice exercises that aim to improve specific aspects of your figure skating!

I know you haven’t covered the axle yet, but I really couldn’t wait to give out this tip, for those trying to get your single axle, many skaters the I know that have tried to learn it have the misconception that the free leg is swinging forward to try and get more height and power for the jump...
While this may be true for the double (and triple when I finally get there), for the single axle the free leg is used more as a guide for the direction of the jump instead of for power
The power for the jump mainly comes from the take off leg, not the free leg
Once you understand exactly how the power is generated and where from , you should have it in a few weeks
And of course it goes without saying, if you want to add more rotations to your jumps off ice, start off by adding a loop jump at the end in combination.
Hope you all spend this off ice time productively

that "scissoring" is for all the jumps or just for the flip and lutz?

I spin better to the right but they are so adamant i spin left in the free skate classes i am pretty turned off by it. Im 36 and not trying to get to the Olympics or compete. Primarily, i dont want to develop muscle imbalances, secondarily, it is a more well rounded athlete to jump and spin in both directions regardless of what the judges and skating authorities think about it. Most other sports have you learn on both sides. I did water polo and we had to throw and catch proficiently with both arms, and in gymnastics they make you cartwheel both sides. One typically is better than the other mostly because you practice more on one side, but again, i dont get why they are so controlling when i practice on both sides.

@@jrg305 I have this problem. I didn’t even realize until returning to the ice as an adult skater that I might prefer to be at love light and hair. Not for jumps really, Not that I have anything other than a waltz jump at the right point and my age and I have an injury unrelated but I’m dealing with also. But I can swing both ways and I’ve never been training to spin clockwise so even though my counter clockwise I have practice I don’t know 1000 times more because that’s the direction they always push you, unless you have such a strong preference that you can’t do it at all there’s huge pressure I know firsthand. I honestly think it’s a simple as him what wife so it’s hard for them to even deal with it. I have had one coach who is very cited to see that I can spin clockwise encourage me to keep trying to swing both ways, and then the virus hit and the rink closed.
For no obvious reason whatsoever, my backward crossovers are the wrong way, in that I have a huge preference or counterclockwise backwards crosses so the entry for a clockwise been is my preferred side. For Ford crossover so ever I prefer 10 o’clock boys as well. So I’m not obviously left-handers/opposite, but a weird mix. And if you’re taking private lessons I would be assertive about your coach needing to accommodate your needs. If it’s in a group class You may need to kind of do the translation in your own head. It might still be useful to talk to the coach privately. But I definitely relate to this pressure. When I was a kid I didn’t think much about it and did it counterclockwise because I could. It occurs to me as an adult that I probably would’ve been a better clockwise spinner. Oh by the way my spin are really bad. So maybe that’s one of the reason.
Sorry this comment was voice dictated really carefully so if there are mistakes I apologize.

@@IceCoachOnline fantastic news, can you please give some tips for under rotated axel? I am missing 1/4 of a turn off ice and do not know how to complete (do not know if I need more height or rotate faster). Again thank a lot for your videos. Highly appreciated!!!
