Holy shit you weren’t kidding about ordering hops in bulk. I just checked and I’m spending almost triple what I could be…thanks as always.
Cheers Braj!
Been homebrewing for 12 years, and currently brew professionally also . I can say this video is 100 % correct.
braj it's a completely different world these days. I learned how to edit and brew at the same time and I was just bullshitting both and going off the books i read. Trial and error and definitely wayyyyy better than any book #experience
@@HOMEBREW4LIFE for sure
I'm starting up again after a 10 year hiatus and these myths are still alive and kicking.
Keep up the good work- your putting a lot into your edits and it’s appreciated. Also I can tell you having fun which is 100 the point of home brewing and UA-cam
thx for the love Jon, cheers!
It's a trip seeing the clips from your old videos. You have elevated your beer game my friend...
hopefully the video / film game has been elevated as well!
Great video as usual wife and I started brewing in 2018 and we are hooked
That is awesome!
You are 100% correct.... and funny
Amazing video. Been brewing for 12 years and owned my own brewery for 5. Everything you say is absolutely correct, and you're exceptionally entertaining. Keep up the good work!
Cheers Tyrel!
Just started up after 16 years off. This is fantastic advice. Every new brewer should watch this.
You are very entertaining and your videos as well, I'm new to brewing
Thank you kindly
100 % agree on the glass, been brewing for some odd 15 years and the only time i've had accidents are with glass (dame jeanne's).
Plastic buckets are enough to do everything including mead, plus they dont take up much space when not in use.
Only reason i'd go for another fermenter is if i'd be doing more sour beers, but even then a standard stainless is about the same price as a good quality tempered glass fermenter.
I got a mrbeer kit from goodwill for 10 dollars still had everything jus set it up last night now I wait😂
I currently have 5 all grain batches under by belt with a super simple system ( heating pot and sticking it in a cool back then covering in 2 duvets, then fermenting in a bucket, I need to do 2 batches for a 20l batch). Haven’t had a bad batch yet and am planning to keep brewing for the foreseeable future.
I actually like the Mr. Beer barrel I’ve made a lot of things in it. That said if I could go back in time and start over I’d skip it, and get something like you recommend or one of the 1-gallon kits. I don’t enjoy brewing with malt extract, it takes away a lot of the joy for me and sucks the fun out of life. Some of them taste alright, but I prefer BIAB. I only make about 2-3 gallons at a time in my small apartment and use 1-gallon glass carboys. It works out well because I can experiment with different yeasts and other ingredients.
I ended up with 2 Mr. Beer kits and only one barrel is still around, I accidentally grew mold in the other one and just tossed it in the trash because I was worried about it.
Another home run video!! 100% truth to all
of the tips! Good work, Braj!! Like always my friend

Appreciate your content. Always keeping it real. It’s good to have a practical dude in the brewtube game. I like practical, it’s cheaper.
Cheers Rick!
As of point 5, you are absolutely right! I've been brewing for a couple of years now and I've noticed there are so many old myths going around and repeated by everybody. "Never squeeze the grain bag", "Always re-hydrate dry yeast", "You must oxygenate your wort like crazy or your yeast will be stressed and die".
Love the "scratched plastic fermenter" thing. How does indeed the bacteria stay there but somehow a phosphoric acid solution doesn't get in there?
braj I am with you 100%
Fermentation probably only takes 3 days, 5 at the most
@@kevinfidler8074 That depends on yeast strain and temperature. I've had yeast that didn't even start until day 3. I was very worried that the yeast might be dead but eventually it did start and it did produce good beer.
@@fdk7014 I agree with you about temperature, too cold or too hot the yeast won't do anything. I brew with ale yeast, and for me winter time is the best time to brew. Place the fermenter in front of a furnace vent, the airlock bubbles like crazy.
I have sprinkled dry yeast on hundreds of wine kits and beer batches right in the primary fermenter and have never had a batch fail.
Palmer and Charlies books were the bibles of brewing like Ben Hogan's 5 easy steps were to golf. All were legends but times have changed and you got to roll with the changes and have a home brew!!
agreed!
Bro I have no idea how you guys don't have way more subscribers. Content is always on point and super informative. Love the vids. Cheers braj!
thx for the nice words henry, cheers braj!
Another great video. I started out in 2012 with a Mr. Beer kit. Actually brewed several decent beers with it before buying a 5 gal set up. Have steadily upgraded equipment, but still keep it pretty simple.
keep it going Rich!
Brewed my 1st batch a week last Sunday with Brewers Best Extract Home Brew Kit by myself. A bit of a shit show follwing all the steps but seems like it went well (stil fermenting) thanks to your vids and guys like Apartment Brewer , Beer and BBQ with Larry. I bought some books but haven't read them these videos are the best! Thanks Braj Lords!
Thx for the support GC!
I've only brewed 3 times, but I have some new neighbors who are interested in brewing, so we are planning to brew together soon. This was a great vid, thanks.
right on Alan, cheers!
Thanks for your videos. I have just recently started making wine at home and beer looks fun as well because it is a much quicker process. Waiting a few weeks to drink your beer compared to a year to drink the wine sounds much more attractive. About to buy an extract kit and get started.
You can do it!
Brilliant video, on point with all of this!
thx for watching Rich!
I've been brewing since I was 12 years old. Learned from my grandfather who was a master brewer, master vintner and a moonshiner so a master distiller. Everything Today is different than what it was back then and I buy tons of brewing equipment. Infact I have a nano brewry in my barn! I just found y'all and I love your content. Brew on! Cheers y'all. Also I'm looking at doing my own videos and I'm soon to open my own brewry. Hit me up with any info please. Oh yea I'm 52 now.
Amazing list!! Thank You!!!
Nice Braj! Bringing it back to the basics for the new folk.... Keep on killing!
good seeing you support the streamers this weekend, cheers!
Love your work brajlord
miss you braj. I hope Australia is treating you well old friend
Been brewing since 2010, definitely agree with your list. Nothing worse than being hammered with 4 more hours of work to do in your brewday. Glass carboys are a bitch to clean, still using my original glass carboys, seeing cracks develop, replacing them with a big mouth bubbler and a plastic pressure capable conical. Good shit!
sounds like we share the same brain lol!
I've appreciated your vids alot, thank you for what you do man 🍻
thx for still watching patrick. Have a good work week braj
Thanks for the tips like always. I wish I could brew more often. I just brewed my 3rd batch this past Sunday, it is a Blueberry Honey Ale.
Sounds delicious! Cheers JM
All true stuff. Just started extract brewing in February 2021. Amber -> West Coast IPA -> American Light -> Summer Ale. Then I discovered Homebrew4Life and got motivated to swap to kegs from bottling. Now I've done a seltzer and a honey ale, next is attempting clones.
Best advice CH said, just keep trying. The extract kits from brewers best have been good so far. Clear instructions and almost everything you need for brew to bottle.
glad you got hooked James!
I was trollin craiglist free and got 6 biggo glass carboy, two buckets, racking wand, carboy brush, a capper, 48 eztop bottles and a bottle drying tree. me and the boozy ex-wife used to collect the brown quart Corona Familiar bottles because I KNEW....ONE DAY!
I am brewing for Purim 2022 when i am gonna pour him my first homebrew EVER! I am doing 8 gal of molasass marzen and 8 of a pilsner. wish me luck! I cleaned those bottles good and I am starting my final shopping trips today

great perspective J dub!
Was a nightmare for me starting out, but now I’m rolling real nice out here in Thailand brewing. Keep it up!
Nice to see another brewer in Thailand, where are you based?
@@jezzajgs northern Thailand, you?
@@jasonteacherthailand ah nice, I'm down down by Bangkok
heck yeah! brew on Jason!
I’ve only done extracts so far. I like to do LME for dark beers because it’s cheaper and you don’t have to worry about it being too dark or any aftertaste given by the LME. But for lighter colored beers I’ve gone to exclusively use DME because the color is usually to dark with the LME and I feel like it imparts and off flavor with the DME I was using from morebeer. Though I’ll still use it for Porters and Stouts with no issue.
solid feedback, cheers Mark!
Super chill video braj. Need to send this to a few buddies to create my own brewing community in my city
Yes please!
Nice video man! All sold... Especially not giving up! My 1st bad brew mad me dig in deeper to figure it out.
good man.. You just gotta know.. A bad batch is gonna happen every so often. It happens to the pros too
Your right, I have done a Mr. Beer kit long after I started homebrewing. If I had started with a Mr. Beer kit I’d probably not be homebrewing right now. I definitely don’t recommend Mr. Beer kits.
Braj minds think alike!
You mentioned dropping $80 then having to dump it. Happened to me right before I started doing temp control in earnest. Imperial stout, cost almost $90 for the recipe. Fermented WAY too hot. Tasted like absolute shit and dumped it. Currently about to brew a new one with temp control. Fingers crossed.
Thank you for your videos and Laughs can you explain the addition of ascordic acid, when and how much should be used, just had my first oxidezed beer and wow not great
Thx Mark! I don't bottle so i don't use ascordic acid, sorry braj

I have to defend Mr Beer a little here. Most people brew the basic extract recipes that come with the kit and they are pretty much junk. However I’ve done some more advanced partial mash recipes they offer and they have come out great.
Fair enough!
My brew day I took charge, but yes my friends were pylons. Luckily I did not get messed up because I spent money and it's my equipment and I wanted my beer to turn out awesome!
you sound like me braj! start a channel!

One problem I see is newbies that do little to no research on brewing. I’m on my 6th brew and I think I have watched 100 videos. Thank you for the great content. This is a must see for the newbies.
Cheers Louis!
I'm gonna make the jump from full extract kits to a partial mash. How big of a brew kettle should I get for a 5 gallon batch?
8 gallons and try to score one with a spigot. They aren't hard to come by anymore
@@HOMEBREW4LIFE thanks man, You're a G! Love your videos

I never brewed before a year ago, 150 gallons later, your incredible list of 10 have been so true for 9.9 of the points for me. Great guidance. Now Go Drink.
Glad to help!
Okay I live next to yakima surely I can get hops here
Can I use an infrared thermometer? Also, your temperature regulator thingy, does that mean you have your fermenter sitting on a heating pad, or how does the “regulating” part work?
You're doing the lords work here🍻🙌
much love brajo!
Heat the extract if you can makes it a ton easier to pour and get the most out.
ooohhh yeah.. especially the mr beer stuff that's rock hard
I came to all the same conclusions about brewing & I brewed my first batch in 1993 lol. Think of the who farted faces I got back then from the homebrewing Bible thumpers for using buckets, not using an atomic stopwatch for a timer even or giving empty 1 liter plastic soda bottles a shot for bottling. (They work fine btw)
I brewed once in 2007 and it was crazy. Bottles exploding all over my closet
In my experience the extract batches never have enough hops, and beer has a malty taste to it. Someone starting out who buys an extract kit on say northern brewer or morebeer buy a few ounces of hop pellets to go with the kit, the beer will taste a lot better that way. And as you suggested in other video's get into kegging asap, bottling beer is a lot of work and a lot of waiting.
yeah might just wanna get into biab at this point
@@HOMEBREW4LIFE started biab last year, never looked back
Awesome advice.
Thanks for watching!
I am going with home depot bucket as carpenter welder I can make a bucket, calibrated thermometer, got it. I like that ornage beer off Hwy 395 by ridgecrest CA. what say you? can I do it.?
Right on with the old sources.
different worlds, cheers John!
When I was 20, I would buy a 12 pack for the night, when I was 30, a 6 pack would get me through. That number keeps going down, now I only drink a couple beers a week. For some reason now, I am interested in home brewing. How long will home brew beer be good for if I bottle vs keg? I’m thinking 5 gallons will last me a loooong time. Thanks!
I highly recommend not bottling!
@@HOMEBREW4LIFE is it because of the hassle, shelf life or other reasons? How long will beer stay fresh if your slowly nursing a corny keg? Thanks for the response
"stay fresh" is a tough question to answer. It's varies from one bottler to another. But ultimately how long the beer will sit in a bottle. Fortunately... Maurey and I drink 500 beers a day, so all of our stuff is fresh and never goes bad.
Do 2 gallon batches and buy smaller kegs that will fit in a small fridge. 👍🍻
Like Brian from Short Circuited said, buy a smaller set up. I have recently down sized from 5 to 2 Gallon batches, for the very reason you outline. Drinking less meant I was brewing less, and not able to enjoy the actual hobby of brewing as often.
Like the others have said bottling is more work to actually do, versus kegging, but bottles are a lot handier in terms of grabbing a couple to give to friends or taking to a party. Also with smaller batches, bottling isn't as much of a mammoth task.
Kegging is more complex (not scarily so). You would have to have a fridge and a CO2 cannister and a tap so space and cost come into it.
If pinned me down for an answer though, I would always go with kegging.
HB4L is spot on though, lower your expectations for your first coupe of batches, and once you master simple recipes and take note of issues or things that went wrong, you will quickly be brewing good fresh beer that is on a par with what you can buy
Thank you! 👍❤️😊
wait.. are you maurey's sister? Is this the realy Trinna from booze bros?!?!!
@@HOMEBREW4LIFE That’s me home-slice 🍻 *squeaky clean* 🧼
Great Video Braj! I have to agree with you on all of those... The beer community is what kept me going, started in Nov 2020 and have just kegged our 18th 5 gallon batch! Thanks for all the laughs and tips
hell yeah, keep it going brajo!
For real. I grab 1 lb bags of hops when they go on sale and keep in the freezer. Its pennies on the dollar compared to buying 1 oz at a time.
buying hops in bulk is the most cost efficient thing to do as a homebrewer
Im still lagering my first Lager in my glass carboy from 2016 cause I’m afraid of contamination if I transfer it
lol!
I'm wondering how you think a blind homebrewer would do? I am going blind but would like to do some home brewing.
Probably not safe by yourself
@@Rubio_Eric thank you very much

can't wait!
So I already purchased a NB 5 gallon kit that had the glass carboys. Should I not use those anymore and buy the plastic buckets or are you just saying that it really doesn’t matter if you use glass or plastic and that plastic is just cheaper and easier to clean?
There's ultimately no right or wrong. I just really hate using glass
Great tips! Cheers CH 🍻
good seeing you in the comments brian, cheers braj!
Braj....what's the best way to dry hop to get the most extraction?? I'm guessing to just throw them in the fermentor......but don't they sink? Wouldn't they eventually sink into the trub? Those are just my thinkings. I've been dry hopping with socks so far but wondering if there is a better way....
There's a good article in craft beer and brewing magazine that talks about hop oils and terpenes. Ultimately that all hops will be in liquid form over the next couple years

Interesting also that you threw out the Mr Beer batch. Those Cooper are simply no good, at least if you do them according to instructions. I actually have another can sitting on a shelf now, I will try to make it in the way I think would make more sense.
it's super hot where i live so i didn't really give it a fair chance, but the instructions still read that it can ferment up to 75F
I've never fermented under pressure. What's the advantage of that?
No oxygen, just like commercial breweries. We drink our beer so fast so i don't think it matters tho for us lol
@@HOMEBREW4LIFE never had a problem with oxygenation....knock on wood. All I brew are hazies too
If you listen to DYI a homebrewing the host said his one friend had a carboy explode on him and he got cut so bad he had to have reconstructive surgery on his hand. Also add one mistake that new Brewers do is they don’t clean or sanitize properly
yup.. sooner or later. Glass carboys are the devil!
You using the ink bird for mash temp? Or just for ferm temp control?
oh yeah, both!

I've got mixed feelings on plastic. Sure, way safer, easier to clean, cheaper, etc. However you can hit glass with much stronger cleaners and plastic it now appears can have weird affects in the endocrine system. Whether it makes a difference by using plastic for primary, who knows.
