  • We would like to introduce our new movie:
“Be Together Chant Gathering Baikaryu Eisanka Higan Gowasan”.
The“Baikaryu Eisanka”are Soto Zen Buddhist hymns that are chanted all over the world. In cooperation with the Soto Zen Buddhism International regional offices, we have created a video of people gathering together remotely to chant Baikaryu Eisanka, called “Be Together Chant Gathering Baikaryu Eisanka Higan Gowasan”.
Due to the COVID-19’s pandemic, it has been difficult for Baikako members in Japan to chant these songs with members of others in temples as they used to do.We hope this video will help them feel a connection between them and members from all over the world.
We are planning to launch next video, “Be Together Chant Gathering -Baikaryu Eisanka-Sanbogowasan”around October 15th.
Baikaryu Eisanka (Buddhist hymns sung with bell accompaniment) are hymns sung in praise of Shakyamuni Buddha, Dogen Zenji and Keizan Zenji and with respect for our ancestors. These melodies were born out of the influence of the natural features of and life in Japan. It is a calm and gentle kind of song that is easy to sing and produces a peaceful heart and new inspiration.Nowadays, Baikaryu Eisanka is chanted all over the world.
    SOTOZEN-NET
global.sotozen... Gowasan is especially chanted atthe Ohigan ceremony.
*OhiganIn Japan the vernal and autumnal equinoxes, commonly calledOhigan, are regarded as times when spirits of the dead return to the world of the living. Many people visit their family graves and/or make special offerings to ancestral spirits at the buddha altars (butsudan) in their homes. Buddhist temples hold equinox assemblies (higan e) that feature offerings to spirits (shorei kuyo).
    Higan Gowasan (lyrics in English)
    Hymns for the Higan*
(*Buddhist services performed during the equinoctial week)
1 Even in a world filled with steep mounts and deep rivers, through
    believing the Buddha’s teachings earnestly.
We will reach the other shore and will be happy.
How bright is the light throughout heaven and earth!
    Eternal salvation is right here.
2 For people who give all, follow Buddha’s teachings, and practice
day and night, the lycoris flower blooms beautifully.
How brisk and clean this place is!
This exquisite melody is not really a dream.
3 With stilling the mind, not getting angry, and praying wholeheartedly
to our ancestors, parents and children together can hold the Higan.
How wonderful is this awakening we have realized!
Storm and snow have ceased for a while.
