      Interesting, especially if you've read the book. But even here, the song lyrics is describing Willow as a "slot" ... in front of herself ... and her father. In the book they openly grope every part of her and the father is enjoying the scene. Being against that makes Howie a stuffed shirt?

    There's a brilliant shot at 2:03 where Howie is looking at the degeneracy before him and in the background, the landlord is out of focus looking straight at him from a side stare, keeping tabs on him, dutifully playing his role well, his eyes widen for a second after taking a drag of a cigarette and before he looks down, making him quite unnerving with being out of focus yet always aware. Little things like this make the film such a classic.

    That violin player is my favorite character in the movie. Whenever there's a party, he's ALWAYS there. He has such an elegant swagger, even though I don't think he has any dialog. He's like the rock star of Summerisle, you just KNOW the women there were throwing themselves at him!

      I always appreciated that the musicians are very much part of the community and on-screen a lot of the time. It helps make the whole thing feel more realistic and folksy. And yeah, when he's part of the crew sitting around singing "Gently Johnny", you know full well he's sleeping with at least one of the girls in the band tonight.

    Everybody is singing and dancing and having a good time. The song sounds like a typical jovial drinking song. In any other movie, that would seem like fun. How does this movie make it seem so creepy and menacing? The low camera angles? Howie's clear discomfort? The fact that the landlord's daughter seems amused even though the song seems to insult her, implying this island has a really weird value system? Honestly I'm not sure. This movie is like a magic trick I can't figure out.

      @PM-zu3cz 4 роки тому +30

      @@Losrandir What is more un-nerving is that while this is a "musical", most musical numbers in traditional musicals take place in sort of a suspended reality where the audience and the actors are aware that the action is stopping, and they're singing song. Whereas, in this movie, the music takes place in real life. Sgt. Howie is walking into this bar, where the whole place goes silent when he walks in, and then they all break into a creepy sea shanty about the "landlords daughter", as everybody laughs about how loose she is.
      It's really creepy, then you think about how these adults probably grew up there...

      It's to do with the persona -- the mask people wear for the benefit of society. An inadequate or inappropriate mask that's not up to the task is the basis of both humor and horror. In this case, the jovial personas are in contrast with the implication that everyone in town has effed the landlord's daughter. Also, many of them are just ineffective -- they're aiming for jovial but coming off as grotesque.

      this is actually one of the only horror films ive seen thats left a lasting impression. lots of memorable scenes especially willows song, the phalus education, and the iconic no bs ending main guy just dies and no happy resolution. some horror flicks (dunno if this even belongs to the standard characteristics of horror as its more like a thriller idk its so subtle yet nevertheless scary and capable of making your heart pound) rely on the supernatural, some rely on gore, some rely on the perfect storm of scenarios, but this film relies on atmosphere it felt as if youre the protag also being controlled by the film as him being manipulated and just tossed around by the cult.

He is seen here in the twilight of his acting career, in fact this was his penultimate film, only appearing in 'Black Jack' (1979) after this. He died in 1982.

    The most frightening aspect of this movie is the portrayal of unswerving dedication from a group of people to a ritual involving horrific human sacrifice intended to "appease the gods" for the specific purpose of producing a "bumper" harvest. A qualified horticulturist could easily have supplied much of the information needed in growing healthy crops ultimately preventing the ritualistic burning to death of live innocent people.

    • @florinivan6907
      @florinivan6907 5 місяців тому

      Its not really about the crop. Its about the inability to coexist with a different belief system. If the crop had been fine they'd still find some other reason to burn. Because at its base their religion doesn't tolerate nonconformity. The crop is an excuse.

    I think this scene is perfect to describe why the Wicker Man is so scary. It's a movie that, since its beginning, keeps taking element of our daily life and suddenly turn them upside down, but keeps going as if it is all normal, generating a sense of unease to the viewer.
    Take this scene: we see a cheerful kind of sea shanty sung by some men at a pub, a song dedicated to the landlord's daughter, which immediately assumes a quite dirty and taunting meaning, even sexualizing the girl. Men and older people laughs and jokes and stares at her with desire at the same time, the cheerful song immediately assumes a pervy tinge. And yet, the young woman laughs, smiles, even goes along with their song and their odd dance. Her father just watches, smiles and giggles.
    This contrast puts you so off and, even if you're laughing at the scene, you can't make any sense of what you're watching because the normal cause-and-effect reactions aren't occurring and yet the movie keeps going, getting worse and worse.
    Man, how much I love this movie.

    I have a similar scenario like this. You go to a bar and everyone is having a good time, singing dancing, free drinks. Your sitting in a stool where the bartender is and humming the music they are playing. After you finish your shot, you ask for another, you accidentally drop your glass and the music stops. You look in the mirror and what do you see, puppets, looking at you.

    In this scene there is no violence, just people enjoying a saturday night, yet it's just that there is so many creepy facets to this scene. There's all kinds of hints about the behaviour of the island about sex abuse and gratification. It's totally normal behaviour to these people

      Paul Giovanni I think wrote this one as an original for this soundtrack. The whole film mixes folk tunes, music from centuries ago, Robert Burns poems, and his original works. And Giovanni demonstrably really knew his stuff when it came to this style of music: For example, "Tinker of Rye" is an original song, but fits perfectly in the style in no small part because in British folk music, tinkers (as men who are likely to be in town while the other men are in the fields working) typically had the same role as pizza delivery guys and plumbers in modern adult films.
